I have looked at just about every jeep related forum and website for info on axles to swap into my 79’CJ-5. So here is my question….

Looking at either a Ford 9” or a Ford 8.8” for the rear axle …. What are your thought on the best to use.

A little info on how the jeep build is going to go:

* Want to keep the axle around the 60” or less WMS to WMS.
* It’s going to be a daily driver that will see moderate trail use on weekends (if time, money and family permit).
* Going to run 35” x 14.5” on it.
* Going to swap in a wider front axle, so if need be I can find a front axle with the same bolt pattern to match the 8.8” rear axle if that is what I decide on.
* Like the thought of having rear disk brakes.
* Have a welder and already doing custom fab on the Jeep.

Forgot to mention this:

Doing a SOA w/ RE 6 leaf reverse eye springs and leaning toward revolver shackles.

Also planning flipping rear shackle hanger and rewelding rear main leaf spring mount to gain about 4" in wheel span.

the 8.8 is a great axle for the back but if you are upgrading the front, there are not many options for the 5on4.5 for the front. so i would say a 9" and find a good front axle

the 8.8 is in both 5x5.5 and 5x4.5(F-150 and mustang,ranger)....the 2 down sides to a 9inch is the low pinion and it take more horsepower to turn then the 8.8....id run which ever i got a better deal on.

the 9 is not going to give you a workable driveshaft angle with a CJ-5 unless you go high pinion.

the 8.8 comes with the suck bolt pattern :( so it will need redrilling or hunt down a 5on5.5 one and then you will be dropping cash on converting a front axle (wider) to match the pattern

i would go the time honored tradition of finding a rusted jeep waggoneer for $100 and using both the front and rear dana 44's from it as they will handle your needs just fine :D
