: question about EGR valve on a 91 Bronco
mtroy 06-10-2005, 09:06 PM Not hard core tech, but I am trying to understand a code I pulled off my computer in my 91 Bronco (351 motor). I am getting an occasional check engine light and my code reader gave a 332, EGR flow low code.
I assume this means the EGR is gunked up or stuck or??? can they be cleaned or does that make sense? Or is this just a replace and be happy kind of thing? Never worked on one before.
Any advice would be great.
If I could figure out how to search for tiny words like EGR, etc, but that darn search engine denies me :(
bronco69drp 06-10-2005, 10:08 PM you can clean them. also i would change the sensor on top of the valve. i have an '89 bronco that did the same thing, it turned out to be the sensor. it was under $20 at napa. :grinpimp:
mtroy 06-11-2005, 07:58 AM Thanks.
mtroy 06-12-2005, 03:09 PM Well, I pulled it all apart and the passage into the manifold is not blocked as far as I can see.
The EGR valve moves, etc, so I put it all back together and replaced the sensor. Same 332 code. What other things can I check? It looks like vaccuum puls the valve open. I suppose I can check for that if I can figure out how to do that the right way.
I assume by Low Flow it means that the sensor is not seeing the valve open far enough? Yes? I don't know how else it is measuring it.
Gotta get this figured out before I get it smogged.
Offrhoder4x4 06-12-2005, 05:35 PM Check for gunk buildup in the metal tube that runs from the manifold to the egr. I've had that clog up before on my 2.9 BTW, to search 3 letter words, add an *to the end.
mudtoy67 06-12-2005, 05:47 PM As far as I know, the egr is not supposed to open, or opens very little, while sitting still. It's only supposed to open at highway speeds, where opening it won't lean the mixture too much. I think this code gets thrown a lot, cause I've seen it on a lot of vehicles, not just fords. It normally just ends up as a "soft"code, which the computer doesn't store. If the light is turning on and off, it sounds like the computer is sensing something that is temporarily out of range. Look all over for any broken wires, dirty connections, etc. You may also have someone ride with you and do a road test. Check the codes whenever the check engine light comes on, and you should catch exactly whats wrong.
aaron o. 06-12-2005, 07:36 PM been fighting the same problem on my neighbors bronco. replaced egr and egr position sensor on top, helped alot but not 100% and code still won't clear, we swapped my evr in today and it made a big difference. haven't tried to clear codes yet, ran out of time and parts store didn't have one, will replace monday and see if code clears.
badkarma88 06-12-2005, 07:56 PM Not to hijack, but is this a 5.0? where is the egr located on an efi 5.0?

No. 5.8 (?) 351 anyway, whatever that ends up working out to. A mechanic friend gave me some insight tonite, so i will mess with it tomorrow some more.
On this motor it is on the pass side and bolted to the intake manifold. It looks like a little UFO with a plug and wires on the top.
aaron o. 06-12-2005, 09:39 PM same place on 5.0, fwd upper pass side corner of plentum.

I don't know about that particular year, but would disconnecting the battery and letting it set awhile reset the ECM? After changing two fouled plugs on my father's truck, dead cylinder code, the check engine light stayed on. I disconnected the ground and let it sit overnite; it fixed it.
