Do a lot of searching. This is a very popular subject.

Your question depends on your fab skills. lifting with IFS and a aftermarket kit would be the easiest unless your are fabbing up your own suspension then it would be easier to do a solid axle swap. there are also companies such as ORD (for chev) Marlin or Allpro (for Toy) who can sell you everything you need to do a sas. but they are expensive. search there is a lot of info on this subject in the archives. as far as gears and the cost of gears, If you are running large tires and trying to save money at the same time find you an older chev dana 44 front axle, and look for one with at least 4;10. 4;56's might be better, then all you need to do is gear the rear to match. lockers are easier to install in a solid axle than IFS.
