Has anyone around here made the swap from half ton axles to three quarter tons on their truck? My '87 was chosen because of the short wheelbase, but I'd like the strength of 3/4 ton running gear. What do I have to watch out for doing this?

you should do some basic searching on the web there is A TON of info out there on this subject. It is one of the most basic things you could do. Grab a set of 3/4 ton axles out of any 73-87 chevy truck and swap them in. Its just that basic.

Yeah I did the swap. Kept the same gear ratio and threw in a locker. I did need a conversion u joint to connect the drive shaft to the new yoke. Ask at your local driveline shop for the joint. It has 2 different sized caps on it. That same shop should also be able to modify your exsisting driveshaft to work with a normal 3/4 ton u joint.

for the front, just swap the backing plates/rotors/wheel hubs(lock outs are the same) to go from 6-lug to 8-lug. and just find a 14SF rear that'll match the gears of the front.

Wow! And I thought I was a newb. Question is if you are doin an axle swap, why not just go 1ton??? If you can't afford it, just leave what ya got and get a bunch of spares...

The Detriot for the 14 bolt FF is way cheaper than for the 14 bolf SF. All FF are 8 lug and I still have the IFS front. 6 and 8 lug, didn't want to carry 2 spares. I'll wait until I get my Solid Axle and then sell stuf and figure it all out

That's great information. If I wanted to go a step futher? Could I change the upper A-arm and run 1-ton spindels?
Thanks Dan

Some good advice here, and much appreciated. I was wracking my brain trying to think if there was anything that I wasn't thinking of to make a swap like this work and i wasn't coming up with any major roadblocks, but I figured if I asked somewhere that people had tried it, I'd know for sure. I was also curious if this would affect the lift that I get for the truck or not, but guessing that it won't matter at all.
I'm going with the 3/4 ton, because they're easier to come by, and easier to get wheels for among other reasons. I haven't set a cap on my budget, so money really isn't an object at the moment.
