I did do a search but really couldnt find too much on this subject also I really dont feel like reading 40 posts saying that I need a D60 up front so dont bother posting if your gonna say that.
I am trying to figure out what one of the two I am going to use. I just got a D300 T-case, so I will be able to go with either. I plan on using 5 on 5 1/2 b.p. so if I went with the Waggy axle I would have to change it over to the 5 lug, then get the D300 flip kit.
The Scout axle would not need the flip on the T-case but I would need to do some exhaust work and I have heard that there are some weird things about putting in a scout axle to a YJ. Also I would need to tilt the knuckels back about 5 deg. That is something I cant do myself so I would have to have it sent out and have that done.
Then there is the alternative of an early Bronco axle. That would give me the drivers pumpkin and about 4" wider track in the front, along with a tone of prep wor to get the coil BS off of the axle. From what I have heard its got less splines and hard to find with disc brakes.
I want to try to keep this as close to the factory width as possible and as low cost as I can, and I know thats a far strech
Thanks

The easiest swap for a YJ is a D44 from a Cherokee/Waggie, the 80+ Waggies come goofy from the factory and are about as bolt on as you can get for a YJ. You'll want to look for a pre '80 Waggie or Cherokee for your ps drop to use w/D300.

Not sure what years had em, but I got my pass. side drop out of a '77 waggy with "quadratrac".
No need for a flip kit with your d300 if you find one with pass drop.
Heres my parts list I'm using so far.

If you get a '74 - '76 Waggy it will have passenger side drop, flat top knuckles & the correct spindles for Ford hubs.

why do want 5x5.5" bolt pattern? I would run pre 78 axles which have passanger side drop to match your transfer case and front and rear 44's. Nothing wrong with 6 lug so why do you want to change it?

I am going to run with the 5 lug because my rear is set up for that. I just gor an XJ D44 and I am running the super 44 OX with the 33 spline. The end of the shafts are set up to run either 5 on 4 1/2 or, 5 on 5 1/2. I was thinking of keepimg the d30 up front but the money that needs to be put into it to give me what I want is not worth it in my mind. Also I plan on running SOA in the next year and I want a hi-steer and I really cant find as many options for it as you can a D44. I figure that the money that I spend to build a mild 44 would not be that much more than building up the d30. I want to have the front locked and I want front hubs. To lock the d30 is about $250-$300, then have to regear to match the rear another $300 plus install, the warn hubds and shafts $850-$900, then on top of all that I will still have to spend some cash for a histeer kit.
If a waggy 44 costs me $200 and then maybe another $300 in small parts to adapt it to 5 on 5 1/2, about $500 for gears and locker, I am still a bit ahead of the game and I have some cash left over for the histeer. Also I have no down time on my Jeep which is my dd. I plan on getting the front axle built and ready for install and then I will take a 2 week vaca from work and pull out the 4.5" SUA and go SOA on the 44 and mount the D300 and build a crossmember, order new shafts and hope to be back in bidness! lets see it that really happens

I'd go with a wagoneer front axle over a scout front any day. On my CJ I'm running waggy front and scout rear w/ 5 on 5.5.
+The Wagoneer uses regular 6 bolt spindles, none of that 8 stud crap. It'll save you money if you go high steer
+the hub lockouts are internal on the waggy compared to the external on the scout
+a combo of chevy and ford brake parts up front. MUCH cheaper than the scout brake rotor.

I am currently running with the ScoutII Axels in the front and rear of my YJ. The front is a major PITA. I just took my time and it take a lot of cutting and beating with a BFH but eventually you can get the proper caster. Good luck!!

I put a dana 300 twin sticks and a 74 cherokee dana 44 in mine. works great.
here is a page with alot of good into:
http://www.jedi.com/obiwan/jeep/d44swap.html
the reason I didn't go with a scout is because of the caster. leads to bad driveline angles and alot of bumpsteer with out the proper caster. and there was no way I was going to cut the knuckes off and set the caster myself.
if you are interested in puttin twin sticks with the dana 300 see my other post about the solution to the dana 300 and twin sticks question. beside a little floor massaging it almost looks like the currie were made for this.
