Wow, that is a sweet set up!! Can you still hook onto a bumper pull trailer, with Jeep and take off. I am really interested in getting a camper like that, but just wanna make sure I can still pull the Jeep. Scotty

Thanks for the quick reply. How does that hook up compensate for tongue weight? It looks like a good set up, just wondering how it supports the actual trailer. Scotty

I have one with the 21" extension and it's rated at 750 lbs tongue weight
and 7,500 lbs trailer weight. I tow a 6,000+ lb trailer/Jeep combo and it's
rock solid without a weight distribution hitch.

That's what the jacks are for, night and day difference!

That's a nice setup. I have a Lance, with no slide and it's plenty big for two of us and my dog. I've never been in one with a slide, but I imagine it's night a day the difference. Plus you sit facing each other, not alongside each other. I have a 4' extension on mine which attached to the frame in two points. I made my rear texas style bumper removeable with two hitch pins and the extension slides in (2) 2.5" receiver tubes each welded to a 18" long piece of 3/8" plate that spreads the weight on the frame. They are welded top and bottom with angle on the bottom, the plate is notched to go around the shackle mount and spread the weight even more. It also lets me slide the camper into the bed almost touching the wall. My weak link is now the actual hitch itself. I've bent my current one so much that it needs replacement. It's a 2" drop one that I run upside down to give me a little lift for my 2wd dually. The trailer/buggy (about 6k) has deflected the 3/4" thick piece where the ball hole is down about 1/2" from the stress. None of the welds are broken or even showing stress, but the actual 3/4" metal is bending slowly. The offroad driving to campsites is what is doing it I think. I'm going to get another one and plate it to keep it from happening again. Just a heads up, the extensions put a HUGE amount of strain on the hitches.

Just a heads up, the extensions put a HUGE amount of strain on the hitches.

The Super Hitch replaces the stock hitch. It is attached with 4 or 5 bolts to the frame, and uses straps on the sides for some models.

Just a heads up, your hitch's capacity is lowered by 1/3 for every 6" of extention you use. Because of the torsion tube design of the Super Hitch, you don't get that.

get a flatbed gooseneck and mount that sucker on the front and leave room for the rig on the back. i hated loading and unloading my old slide in. plus i did not like how the truck handled (f350 crew cab, 4x4, longbed)

Nope... it says 3650 on the tag with standard equipment, indcluding a full tank (46 gal) and propane.

So based on standard camper weighing in the industry, if I put a q-tip and a pair of underwear in it, it should weigh about 4500 lbs... :)

I'll weigh it this weekend.

That's a nice camper, they are popular with the snowmobile crowd around here. I have a 10' Elkhorn on my 3500 CTD and hauls it really well. I got the camper package and it just touches the overload springs with the camper on, with the trailer hooked up it sits nice and level. I went with the Reese Titan hitch and Torklift mounts :smokin: .

I'll bet that your not far off in saying 4500. My Lance says 2400lbs and I've never weight it that didn't go at least 3000 lbs. It will be a load even for a dually.

It will be a sweet setup though!

The gooseneck idea is cool I like everyone that I've seen setup that way.

that camper looks HUGE on the back of that truck. how does it handle at speed, cornering, etc?? Seems like CoG may be increased (higher) and maybe rear end heavy??

bonus points for inclusion of the hottie girlfriend in the pics...

I weighed Before and after:

No Camper, full tank, 1x250lb driver, 1x210lb passenger, 97 12V Regular Cab 4x4

Front: 2000kg (4400lbs)
Rear: 1110kg (2442lbs)

Total: 6842lbs

With Camper, no water, empty tanks, full propane, 1 x 250 lb driver, loaded with food and drink for a weekend, clothes, tools etc...

Front: 2060kg (4532lbs)
Rear: 3010kg (6622lbs)

Total: 11,154 lbs

So it looks like everything else being equal, the camper weighs about 4500 lbs.

Can't. I can't even run a quad or extended cab truck.

I have an RV area beside my garage, and I need 141" or less wheelbase to get my 16' trailer in, or I'm into my neighbors fence...

Yah, that idea went out the window when I tried to put the camper in the back.... there is NO WAY I will be getting the trailer in there as well, regular cab or not, so I changed directions and went with the QC.

It's 2 inches from the fence, and 2 inches from the garage to maneuver

I'm going to find or make something to move the trailer in by itself...

Moving trailer in unloaded, I imagine.... Princess Auto had something that is used for moving trailers around. Looks like a battery powered jack with a trailer ball on it. Check the far back corner where the trailer supplies are. Dunno if it was for sale but worth a shot. The one I was playing with wasnt working very well but who knows?

WOLF359
06-23-2005, 07:34 PM
I went and looked at Princess Auto, might work, but needs bigger rear tires... 500 buck though... stlil thinking...

I might just put a hitch on the buggy.... probably leave the rear steer out of it though, I don't know If I can back a trailer up with rear steer, I'd likely end up jacknifed under the trailer somehow... :)

Thats what I was thinking. I've never used one, but it seems like it would work.

I occasionally end up using my trail rig for moving trailers around, way nicer that using the pickup, plus it does less damage to the lawn if i have to drive on it. However if thats your only way to get the trailer in/out, your kind of screwed if its taken apart for. I've been on the lookout for a cheap lawn tractor I can put a trailer ball on.

Just did a 2000 km trip over the Rogers Pass (Alberta - BC). Other than needing more power, it towed very well. Very little sway, I was just onto the overloads. Needs an exhaust brake for big hills, even with new truck brakes and a brand new trailer with a Jordan, we still needed more braking. Camper weighs 4500.

Not my offroad truck, but you get the idea... Dodge/Camper/Truck/Trailer/loaded/no water was 20,300 going down the road. Truck and Camper weighed 13,300, buggy and trailer the rest.

nice setup! but your weights sound a little heavy.

My 3500 CTD 4x4 quad cab scales at 7450LBS with a full tank and me(180). My 10' Elkhorn stickers at 3K, but runs about 3500 loaded(every option but a generator). That usually puts me at ~11K with my camper. My GVW is 11,500 and it just touches the overloads( I guess they really are overloads :) ). Depending on what trailer I have on, I add another 250->500LBS toungue weight which puts me right at the rated GVW.

I used haul it on a F250 with airbags and overloads, but it was like riding a fat chick on a waterbed :D . My stock 235/465 seems to have enough power to keep up with traffic. I'll bet the 305/555 doesn't need much help :grinpimp: .

Trust me, I would love it if it was lighter, but I scaled it.

Camper stickers 3645, it has a 3.6kw Genset and a AC unit, micowave, stove, oven, slide out etc.... I weighed it with clothes and food, with no water in the tanks - 4500 lbs. Add fresh water (50gal) and it's close to 5000 lbs. It's a giant cow of a camper.
