on my dads rig, he loses about 1 quart of oil for every 30 gallons of gas that goes through the motor, but it doesnt burn it (no blue smoke), and it doesnt leak it (no stains on the driveway). any ideas where the fawk it could be going? this is starting to get annoying...

You should follow your dad's truck with another vehicle when he is driving.... leaky valve seals can cause the engine to suck in oil as you deccelerate (when the throttle plate closes the manifold vacum peaks and can suck oil into the engine.
if the valve seal leak is not too bad you would not notice it on startup..
Basically follow behind as your dad accelerates and deccellerates the engine and look for a puff of blue...
Another way to reliably check the condition of the engine is to have a cylinder leakdown check done.... this pressurizes the cylinders with shop air and can tell you if the rings are sealing...

Did you check the radiator or overflow bottle? How many miles is on the engine, what do the spark plugs look like, black, oily? I had the same issue on a 350, used oil but it didn't smoke or leak. Ended up being worn valve guides. Do a leak down test......:skull:

What rig and motor are we talking about? I had a Buick V-6 that used a lot of oil. Ran great. I had replaced the valley pan style intake manifold gasket with one that just sealed at the ports. The PCV was in the bottom plane of the intake. Without the valley pan there, the PCV would suck oil sprayed from the cam area. Found that after I changed the rings because I thought they did not seat. DOH! Good Luck,

its a 97 land rover 4.0 V8 with about 70,000 miles on it... will have to do the follow behind it thing and check that out. how much does a leak down tester cost? i have the air, but not the tool... thanks.

its the gawd damn oil faries. its burning it, it just can't go [poof] it's gone. the converter will burn a lot of the oil after it passes through and motor. thats what its designed to do, burn up residual hydrocarbons. pull your plugs and look at them real good. my bet is the valve seals are going. let it idle for 15 to 20 minutes then rev it up and see if it smokes.
