couple questions:
1) can a pintle hitch pull more weight if its bolted to a big fat plate,vs being bolted to a reciever and slid into the hitch.
ive seen pintles rated at 15000 lbs,but the highest rated receiver ive seen is only 10,000.
2nd) if we have a 10,000 lb trailer(not exceeding the reccomendations of the hitch), can the pintle support more tonge weight when its bolted to the plate,vs being slid into the hitch?
did a search for "pintle" found 3 pages of good info, but nothing really discussing weights

answered your own question. you won't find a 2" reciever rated at more than 10,000.

The pintle itself has a set max tonque weight that want change depending on how its mounted. However, if using it on a reciever, you'll likely max out the tongue weight for the hitch or tow vehicle before you even come close to the pintle.
basically, pintle hitchs weren't made for towing out of your reciever hitch on your basic 1-ton light truck. these things were made for heavy tag trailers towed behind dump trucks and other medium duty truck.
also, unless you have a lot of weight... going to a pintle hitch is going to be a rough ride.

I tow with pintle hook. It sucks Stick with a bullydog or something along those lines. It will also make your hitch pin oval your hitch because of the back and forth motion being more.

thanx for the responses. i dont really plan on towing a 10,000+ lb pintle trailer with any frequency. a freind does have a couple different trailers, and i just want this truck to be versatile and be able to move one of them if he needs me too ;)
when i use it to pull my own junk it will be either my 20 foot bumper pull trailer that uses a 2 5/16 ball,or the 31 foot gooseneck that i hope to build this summer :)
