: Disk brake on Split Transfer Case?

Does anyone have any informaton/photos/weblinks for fitting a disk type handbrake to a split transfer case? I scored a 5 speed gearbox and split transfer case and want to put them in my '74. I have most of the other issues sorted, but I don't like going out without a handbrake!

Cheers

You can put a drum parking brake on with factory parts. I just finished my parking brake conversion on the split case the other day. Uses all the same shoes, internals, cable etc. You will need the bearing retainer/backing plate mount, output shaft, and parking brake drum form toyota. Then reuse the backing plate, adjuster etc.

Rick,

Works great! And its not hanging lower than the bottom of the case... Thanks Rick! Now I need to find a longer PB cable, but that is due to the NV4500 conversion...

cruiserbrett,

I'm about to do the same thing to my '75 FJ40 (NV4500 to split T-case). I assumed you used AA's kit? What year of split transfer case did you use?

Which transfer input gear did you use? Toyota makes different input gears, one for the old short 4 speed, 2 or 3 for the long 4 speed/5 speed transmissions and two for the automatic tranny. Since my t-case came without an input gear< i'm confused as to which style of input gear I really need.

Dave,

I used an AA kit for the 19 spline/NV4500 setup. The splitcase came from a late '86 FJ40, so it had the input gear. Figuring the date of your case will dictate the gear requirement. I have not heard of any fitment problems of any of the cases/gears, so your gear sellection would be based on the year...

Thanks, Brett. Looks like my next task is to figure out what year and model transfer case it is. This is what the front of my transfer looks like:

And this is what Rob Mullen sent me:

Who can tell me what year is my transfer case?

34mm idler right dave?

It does not have the extra bolt hole, so some post 10/82 and pre 10/1985 case. It is H55 compatable as it has bearing recess and oiler cup.

For a NV conversion you should sacrifice a non H55 type! They are paperweights for most. All you need is the case too!

By the way, my t-case came from an '86 FJ60...not an FJ40(obviously) I am retarded. Dave, I can send some pics of the setup... I am running a chevy v8, NV4500 and split case. The parking brake drum and the center tubular cross member wanted to occupy the same space for a while, but a sawzall solved that one blade later. Also the P.B. cable is really short on my early '76, maybe the '77/'78 are longer??? I cannot get the cable withing three inches of the handle mech under the dash... For the cross member, I can email you pics if you want some ideas, mine came out alright, but no skid plate yet... I got the tranny tucked up to the point where the bottom of the tranny is actually above the bottom of the frame rails, but the mounting provisions of the AA crossmember left a bit to be desired, So I fabbed the lowest profile cross member I could...Still hangs down a bit(1.5"), but will make a bomber mount for the skid plate.

It's a 34mm idler.

But it's the one I have. And besides, it's being treated to a 6.34:1 NV4500, not sacrificed :D

Please e-mail me the pics, Brett. Morgan solved his PB cable issue by getting a longer cable from Mudrak. He's running an SM465-NP203-3sp. L/C case. I'll try to find out from Gary what is the cable's factory application.

I've been wondering what crossmember I'll use. I've seen someone make one similar to AA's where it mounts on the back of the case. Your crossmember pics would be great.

Needing a Tcase brake on my split case soon to pass inspection..
Dave you have pics on that? I don't think that old link worked anymore..
I'm debating getting Marlin's 4spd Toybox rear output to hang my spare 4spd tcase on the back of my FJ62 till I figure out the split case Ebrake thing. Same price as a Split case ebrake setup and I can later use the Toybox stuff on my FJ40 anyway.
ALready have toybox on my FJ62 with split case so it's just changing the rear stuff and drive shaft flanges and adding a shifter for high low yada yada..
So What do I do?
Would like a disk style cause I could probably make my own. Thoughts? Opinions? Anyone?

Here is my split case parking brake. Made with all OEM toyota parts from Rick D.

Let's hear some more on the early imput gear, what spline was it?

Eldorado calipers are a smaller piston thus less brakes
But an option, just not the one I think I wanna pursue.
And quit callin me names or your inners from Pig will be held ransom! Yeah they're in the garage.. :)

Anyone have any tech on hooking up the eldo calipers to the stock L/C parking brake? I've never seen any, though I've never searched!

If Rick D isn't still in the parts business, I can get this stuff... P-brake conversions, extended speedo cables, speedo cable extensions, etc...

I've got a set of eldorado calpiers in the shop. Might do that for temp purposes and adapt them to the stock ebrake.. Not sure just how to do that yet but it has been done in the past.
Would rather have something more substantial for an ebrake. I"ve not heard good things on caddy caliper ebrake setups being sturdy and their "Holding" power.
Just wanted to see what other ideas were out there for ebrake setups on split cases etc.
If I do the eldorado setup I"ll make sure to document how it goes together now that I have a computer that can actually work at home!
