My buddies 91YJ has electrical problems (ignition) and I don't have the time or the know how to troubleshoot this stuff...He doesn't have a whole lot of money but hes a great guy and needs help. He will kick down some suds I'm sure.

He's in Rancho Cordova CA....

PM me if you can help and I'll hook you up with him.

what are the general problems? Engine related? just random electrical???

Fuel pump went out - Replaced it - had no voltage to fuel pump - swapped relays in the engine compartment - all good....nothing different.
Ran a wire from the bottom of the relay to fuel pump so when he turned the key on, the pump would get juice - Pump has juice - 41 PSI at the fuel rail.

Tried to start it....worldn't start - checked for voltage at the coil - Nothing there...

Told him to replace the ignition module.......Haven't heard from him in a while...

Am I on the right track?

NOPE!

The right track would be to see why it does not have power, not replace parts that are good. The PCM triggers the coil on the negative side. Check fuse #9. If good see if the injectors have power to them on one side with the key on. Go from there using a wiring diagram.

Edit: are the injectors clicking? Could be a multi-layered problem with things like the crank angle sensor involved.

FYI the pcm turns the fuel pump off within 3 seconds of cranking and the engine not catching. If you get voltage at the pump when you first turn the key to on and/or hear the pump then my bet is on the crank sensor.

When I turned the key on, I got no voltage. Thats why we bypassed all the other shizzle and wired it directly to the fuel relay so it would only come on when the key is turned.

FYI.......Hes got more splices under the dash than I can count......

1 more thing.....His starter started working after 6 months....He was looking for the Ign. switch and was rumaging around under there and might have something loose to get the starter to work again....

just curious, on my 01 heep I have an ASD fuse that when blown cuts the subsystems out including fuel pump, alternator, fuel injection. The engine will turn over but it will not start. might be worth looking at instead of the shotgun approach which just leads to frustration.

ASD fuse?

ASD = Auto Shut Down
There is a fuse and relay for the ASD. They supply power to the fuel pump relay;)

I switched them once.....the fuel relay and the auto shut down relay....Didn't seem to make a diff.......I could be wrong.

For the life of me, I can't figgur this out...

You switched the fuel pump relay and ASD relay around?
Your fuel pump still would not work since you need both relays working together. Swap them out with KNOWN good relays (new would be smart)
or non-essential relays (such as A/C).

Do you atleast have a good wiring diagram for this engine? Have you checked the PCM connector for proper 12VDC from the key switch in start and on positions? The PCM has to have a 12VDC in the start position to wake up the PCM.
