I just purchased a 84 CJ. I have a pretty well built 94xj.I will be parting out the XJ. I would like to use the inline 6 out of the XJ. I would like to know if there are any snags I should worry about. Will it fit. The engine it will be replacing is the 258. I plan to use a t18 or sm tranny. Thanks..

The 4.0 is vitually identical to the 258. It is an easy swap. Go for it.

Use the 258 engine mounts, and the 258 sending units for the gauges.:D

Cant use the 84 CJ's motor mounts for the 4.0L they are different. The 84 Cj has the older type 258 in it the motor mounts are totally different. Got to do new motor mounts, and have fun with the guages...

The older mounts will work. I used them.:D

it's realy simple.
here is a write up:

I put a 98 4.0 in my 94 yj with the wiring harness from a 94 XJ. there were about 10-12 wires to splice.

also don't forget to get a new gas tank with a pump.

what was the 4.0 out of? what tranny did you use? I have a 4.0 from a grand cherokee and want to put the auto from a TJ in. IM gonna figure out all the electrical, just wanted to know if someone has already figured it out.

You will have to swap out the water pump from a YJ/ZJ and possibly the idler pulley. You will need the fan blade and belt pulley from a YJ. The motor mounts from the 258 need 1 hole enlarged to bolt on to the 4.0. Wiring is the biggest issue. Here are several sites on the subject:

You don't need that either. All you need is a pump and filter from an '89 F150 w/ a 5.0. It's frame mounted. $79 at Autozone.

4.0 out of 98 TJ, wiring haness and computer out of 94 XJ. I am using a 90 AX15 tranny.

are you wanting to put the 4.0 from the grand and the auto tranny from the TJ in your CJ? if that is the case i have no idea.

if I ever want to put an auto tranny in mine the winring harness and computer were from an auto and still have the connections I need so I would just plug them up. not sure what you would have to do.

good luck.
