View Full Version : Smallest Trailer to Tow 2 rigs?

What's the shortest trailer you can get away towing 2 rigs with? I'm really thinking about building my own trailer when i have the cash for a new one. Right now i'm towing with a '90 LD 3/4 ton chev so i need a trailer as light as possible and don't want to attempt to tow 2 rigs till i get a new trailer. I'm really thinking a 20' 12k or 14k deckover gooseneck would be nice though there's no way i can fit 2 rigs on it. Could i get away with a 22 or 24'? Maybe i'll build a 20' and make it so i can expand it to a 26' when i have a new truck.

Mainly depends on length of 2 rigs you plan to tow.

You might get away with a 24' if you had a couple Sami buggies, but I wouldn't think anything less than a 28' would do.

either 2 stock wheel base jeeps or a stock wheelbase jeep and an s10 cab truck.

there are lots of different jeeps ranging from 85 to 108" in wheelbase ;)

while the rear of one vehicle could hang over the deck of the trailer,id prolly want it to be long enuff for the entire rig to fit,and not have the tires right on the edge. also maybe allow some extra room for a toolbox or tire rack to minimize what needs to be carried in the limited room in the bed when towing a goosneck.

best way to answer you question is for you to measure the longest combo of the the 3 vehicles you may want to tow,and add room for whatever else you may want to carry on the trailer.

my dual rig hauler is gonna be 31 feet :grinpimp:

I have a 32' trailer. I can get 2 full size long bed trucks on it. *BUT* neither can have grill gaurds as there is not enough room. A long bed and a full size bronce set up for trail duty fit real nice. I actually need 34' to fit the trucks I want to haul without loading problems.

When you figure out how big of a trailer you need, add 2 feet. I got enough trailer for what I need, and I could use 2 more feet.

I assume the chevy is gasser or a 6.2, you will want to go light with your big trailer too. I run down the road pushing 29,000# with my full size iron, and 7000# trailer. I would hate to pull that with a gasser.

I went 34' 14K on mine, which was excessive, (I added 5 ft to the total of the two vehicles, and then we still have to hang one off th eback to get the TW right.)

Your description sounds like you need 28-30' roughly...

a LD 3/4 ton won't handle the tongue weight you will have with a gooseneck though, as no matter how light you make the trailer, you will have close to 12000 lb which would mean you should have about 2500 lb TW.

2 stock jeeps should fit on 28 ft. But go dually tandem axles. I pulled this type trailer the other day and man those 4 extra tires on the ground really helps in how it handles

Easiest thing to do is park 1 rig in front of the other, about 6 inches apart. With the 2 rides facing each other, helps with moving move of the weight off the tongue of trailer. Lay a 2x4 1 ft from back of 1st rig. Then do the same behind 2nd rig...and compensatew for type of ramps you are gonna use. If they are fold over ramps....allow room to pull back ride far enough forward to allow ramps to lay flat...and then back up onto them. Take your measurement 2x4 to 2x4 and there you have it. Simple and easy.

I have a 24' triple axle . 2 jeeps will fit, just fine, just no stingers. I also towed a samurai & Toyota Mini to Moab last year, with t, with no problems at all at 70- 75 mph.

used 2x4 3/16" tube, wanted to keep it light. went with 3 axles to spread the load.

By the way, it is for sale. :)

we tried to fit 2 Sammis on my 18 ft trailer when we were in a bind, but it just didn't fit ...
20 ft would've even been almost impossible and in case you want to go with 2 jeeps or a jeep and 'fullsize' you'll definitely need something in 24' plus (depending on bumpers, but also on whether or not you can live with some overhang)

Ok.. according to those numbers, that trailer is 24' long, say on the flatbed part.. and the jeep/runner combo is 26.5' long.. yet the back end of the jeep is still on the flat portion of said trailer.. either my eyes are playing tricks on me, or those numbers of yours arent correct..

Looks like the back tires of the jeep are at the edge of the trailer.... Its a picture angle thingie

I put my big jeep and a stock tj on my 24' gooseneck and it was WAY too tight. Would never run that way unless it was an emergency.

Two big jeeps fit great on a 30':

Put 2 stock wheelbase '74 CJ5's on a 20' tag trailer once. Had 'em both on forward for the outbound trip & had too little tongue weight. Put the first one on backwards on the return trip & had the 2nd Jeep almost a foot further forward as a result. Much better.

The contact patch on the jeep rear tires is JUST on the trailer. The roller fairlead actually just clears under the rear bumper on the 4rnr. (So they share a couple inches huh huh) The jeep hangs over the back of the trailer but it all seems to tow fine. I could get the 4rnr closer with a little modification of it's winch mount or the crossbrace on the gn, haven't needed to so I'm going the lazy way.

4rnr 103" wb 14' oal
jeep 97" wb 12'6" oal

i have 2 questions-
1) how the f*ck did you get that thing up on the gooseneck?
2) isnt the hitch pretty far back on the tow rig? ive always read it should be forward of the rear axle

1. ramps. and there is a deck welded to the top of the goose to support the vehicle.
2. yes it is far back. not a problem for the rig weight distribution wise. and with it that far back it helps the trailer cheat less around corners.

For 1 I don't have a crew cab here. For 2 I thought someone might know already.

Couple club members pull a double (His and Hears rigs) His is a Scout on D60's and 42's and hers is a Scrambler on 36's. I think their trailer is 34. Trying to find a picture of it but coming up empty. Ass end of the Scrambler with rack hangs off the end a pretty good as I recall.
