i want to put fullwidth 60's, small block chevy, turbo 400 and atlas 2 on a 48 flatfender, i know im going to need to strtch the wheelbase on it. If anyone has done something simalar ( i know im not the first) i would really appreciate some pics and a heads up on any problems i may encounter.

Thanks,

Josh

Why not the TH350. It is almost 3" shorter, and the first gear is 2.52:1 instead of the 400's 2.48:1. Seams like a better choice for your application. You probably already have the TH400 right? I'm picturing the rear output being directly above the pinion. Maybe you could convert it to chain drive with a spring loaded tentioner to compensate for the suspension travel. Muhuhahahahaha.... J/k.
Good luck man,

Search for some pics of Flatty's old flat fender...although it did have a SM465 I do believe...I too would go with the TH350 over the 400, unless you already have a 400...I was in the same boat as you, I am building up my wrangler though, and I am using a 4.3L(why not use a 4.3L) they are a lot shorter and you can get tons of parts very easily and can get some very decent power out of them??? I know you want to do it right this time and build it bullet proof...hence the 400, right:D:D:D

ok heres the deal, i appreciate all your suggestions, but i want the small block mostly for the feel and the sound, i realize its overkill, as for the tranny i just want it to be strong and i dont know if a 350 would be ok

This is what novak says about it... "TH400's do not convert well into 81" and shorter wheelbased Jeeps. The exception is if a V6 is used and moved forward in the engine bay. However, a V6 and TH400 is not the best combination, as 12-17% of the engine's power is consumed just to run the transmission. The more efficient TH350 would be the automatic of choice for such a swap. However, the TH400, coupled to a strong V8 in a CJ7 and longer Jeeps, is a fine choice for a conversion. If you have any questions about planning around such issues, feel free to give us a call and see if we can assist you." From Novak website.
Most people think THtreefiddies are plenty strong. Especially for a lightweight Jeep application. Remember they were used in trucks that weigh twice and more what your Jeep weighs and behind the same engine you plan to use. If you are dead set on the TH400. By the comment above (from novac), maybe since you are planning on stretching the wheelbase anyhow, you could stretch it out longer than 81", and everything would be fine.
Just my 2% of a dollar.

Also the SM465 is like 6" shorter than a TH400 and the 420 is 7.5" shorter. Not quite the same swap..

Here is a thread that I started that has the same subject matter. http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=34273 There is a guy on there named Sherpas Rig. He has a Jeep he recently bought with that set up in it. His is a 1953 flat fender. Maybe you could PM him and get some info.
