Where's the best place to get a set of gears for the rear of a pathfinder? Its a 1990 and 4x4parts wants a butload of money for em. Any other suggestions?

You won't find gears for less than a buttload.
What gears do you want? 4.636 not low enough?

There's only one supplier, Nissan/Nismo, and the prices from any of the few sources tend to be pretty much the same. Go with 4x4parts.com, you won't find them under $400 anywhere.
I assume you're looking at the 5.14 ratio. Nismo recently released a set of 5.14 gears made specifically for the 1990-2004 H233B rears, but for some reason AC doesn't list them for the Hardbody/Pathfinder yet, only the custom-modified ones that they offered for $625.
Look under the Xterra/Frontier section for the new gears, they're actually a little cheaper than the old pre-90 ones, and will work for your diff.

does the third just swap from an Xterra into the H223B rear end. I took the rear out of a V6 automatic nissan truck for the higher gears and the open diff it came with.

31 spline H233B thirds fit on 31 Spline H233B axles and 33 Splines go with 33 spline axles.
so...your spline count has to match.

You won't be able to put an Xterra third into your Pathfinder, spline count is off. But otherwise...
You should have the 11-stud housing (pre-90 had 9 bolts) that the third mates to.
The 87-95 Pathfinder and 86.5-97 Hardbody (plus the 99 and early 00 Frontier excluding crew cab) were all 31-spline.
The 96-04 Pathfinder, 00-04 Xterra, and 00-04 Frontier (with the above exception) are all 33-spline and not compatible with the older 31-spline diffs.
And there's the issue of the ABS sensor on the third of the so-equipped Pathfinder/Hardbody and the 2WD Frontier Xterra. 4WD Frontier/Xterra don't have a sensor on the third. Shouldn't really be an issue unless you're concerned about keeping ABS.

If you have ABS, just swap the 3rd from a 2wd Xterra, remove the ring gear from the carrier in it, and use the carrier from your old 3rd member. Reset the backlash and preload and you're done.

That doesn't help the ABS, unless by chance the signal from a 2000+ Xterra matches that needed by a 1990 Pathfinder...
