Hello all, I'm completely new to the IH world so please bear with me for this one question. I stopped and looked at a truck this weekend and the only thing the owner could tell me was that it was a 1972. It was a crew cab short bed, 8 lug so I'm guessing 3/4 ton. The weeds were too tall to see the pig's to tell what axles. From what I've found searching this morning I believe it would be called a 1210 4x4 pickup. If anyone could give me some clues as to things to look out for when I go back to look at it again I would appreciate it. Also what it would have for drivetrain, the guy didn't even know what motor was in it. It was an automatic on the floor though. Any help you can give me as far as what it would have and what to look for I would appreciate it.

Thanks,
Roger

Hey fawker you're not too far from me. There's a guy here that has lots of Scout parts, and some truck parts. If you get it let me know and I'll pm his info.

If you are looking for a local club, try injt.jeepthing.com We get together once a month to drink beer, eat hot dogs, and do shit like this (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=310277) and this. (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=344160)

A friend of mine (the parts guy) had one, and he had a Scout 345 and a 2wd 727 with a divorced t-case. I don't know what front axle was in it, but he had a d60 out back. Truck was originally a 2wd model, everything just bolted right in.

I'm not far at all. If you want another board to checkout go to http://bbb.jeepininin.com There's about 10 people from the Fort on there and several of them meet at Hooter's every Friday.

As far as the truck goes it's pretty much solid it needs all new u-joints in the driveshafts as his 15 yr old toasted them playing in the field other than that I couldn't see anything that had to be done. I would be interested in finding some scout axles though if you have a hookup shoot me an email at crazy_cooter56@yahoo.com.

If you get on the board I posted I use the same name there and they don't care what you drive, hell I'm wheelin a Blazer now.

Also would about 1800 be too high for one of these in what I consider good condition. I found a small rust hole in the driver's floorboard and one in the bed other than that the body is solid and it's got a good set of I think 33's on it.

Look for rust under and above the windshield (cowl and roof) - that's Bad.

Hood hinges are commonly rusted, but not a problem - you can get patch panels.

4-doors are  :D

I saw no rust in those places, but I will be sure to inspect those areas closer thank you.

Check out these two site: www.binderbulletin.org and www.justinternationals.org there is tons of info and the regulars are real open to newbie questions.

Open the glove box, pop the two little spring latches on the sides to open the box ALL the way (take everything out first) then look at the firewall where the seam sealer is.

If you can see into the engine compartment, that can be an issue. Its just rust, but will allow water and such in. For repair you will have to fab your self.

If the rust is minor, then use it a bargoning chip. If no rust then you have found a rarity, snatch it up! Then take efforts (cleaning, painting and sealing) to keep the rust out of there.

Auto with a floor shift?? Not factory, but anything goes on a 30+ year old truck...

I have the same truck in a 2wd... love the lines on the thing.

The front axle is most likely a drum brake closed knuckle D-44 but it could be a Drum brake closed knuckle D-70.Both had drum brakes for that year.Scout axles are way to narrow to put on that fullsize but chevy or dodge axles make a good and very easy swap.
Good luck

Me? No, not factory, he used a Scout shifter on a custom "riser". There were several hundred thousand on the closk when he sold it.

thanks for the replies, I don't care for the closed knuckle idea but I've got chevy frontends sitting around so that's not a major issue. The glove box hint is one I'll have to keep in mind as well.

Thanks again
