so guess what we found at loon , thats right , litter.
Under the bushes at staging area was lots of shit flowers , cans , clothes .
On the trail it was pretty damn clean , once we reached the trail head at Tahoe where barker splits it was hanious. Bud cans just stuck in the snow like trophies next to all the hard spots , camping gear discarded , fires just left which was cool but throwing all your trash bags on top before you leave,
I bet it gets closed by the end of summer....

That's awesome. It's great to see how people really take care of something precious to them, something that they enjoy. I'd like to see the Eldo cty. sheriff's just shoot these people. :mad3: :mad3:

maybe somebody should crap in their rigs... maybe they'd get the idea then... probably not... but maybe.

Thanks for letting us all know. I will be doing my own "clean up" run while we are running the trail this week(reminds me-get more trash bags). To bad folks cant figure this crap out......just silly.

I was hopin we would come upon some bud drinking fools stuck somewhere but apparently they are fast enough to avoid capture cause the trail was clear just had bud cans . Seems as though it took 2 beers to clear a really hard spot and 1 beer about every 500 yards after that.

and as you stated, not so much on the actual trail. I think this just goes to show that the actual users of the trail take care of the trail. you get a lot of the wanna-bees and campers at loon and tahoe trailhead areas who don't care. we were at spider a couple weeks ago and I was happy not to find any mess at all. I think everyone is doing a great job. keep up the good work.

ps I am glad to see another that cares about the Rubicon like I do. Hang in there, cool off and join the fight.

I think in regards to Gatekeeper I think you hit it on the head here dozer. There has been more people drawn to the spectacle of "watching" drivers at Gatekeeper. Most that go to the Trail, get through it and keep going. It is the non-wheelers most likely leaving trash there. If there is no trash can like in the "campground" they are unwilling to carry it back. This is a problem we need to step up and handle. Now we know to pay extra attention on picking up at Gatekeeper.

I dont think the problem is not having trashcans at Gatekeeper, the problem is no one has steped up to these "campers" or "watchers" or whatever you want to call them. Everyone says "give them an ear full", well I dont see that working, so as posted befor, I'll be up there this weekend with honey and 2 loaded fist.

Just please don't call all of us Gatekeeper gawkers the ones leaving trash. My Fiance and I hike the trail a few times a year just to watch what we will participate in once our rig is finished. Everytime we come out of the trail, we are carrying at least 2 large bags of trash we have picked up on and around the trail. (I mean even using rubber gloves to pick up less desirable things). :barf:

Nothing FOTR is doing condones using any kind of force or even angry confrontation.

Simply explain the deal. "Hey buddy, did you know that ...........? Remember the forest needs to be kept clean? etc." Let them make up their own mind about being responsible. I guarantee it will work better than forcing them. Because next time you won't be there and they will do it to spite you. Worst case, forget it and just pick it up for them.

We found TP flowers on the slabs next to LS last weekend. I think the trail is doomed, because there is no way to make it stop. There are too many people out there that just don't know whats up with the sanitation issue.

That is not to mention the kids breaking their junk in the box. Here I go. It is bad enough that they need to be drinking while attempting the LS (I guess you need a can of man to tackle those boulders), but there is water running through there right now. Every little component that breaks while over that water is dumping oil into the stream. Not to mentioned the gasoline that gets spilled when they get sideways. You can't clean this up, and you can't hide it. I am surprised that we are allowed up there at all while there is runoff on the trail. I hope the ecofreaks are hunting someone else other than us right now, because if they saw what we saw last weekend, it would be over for us.

And what's up with all the rap music at LS. I thought this was a white boy activity. Leave your rap at the mall!

JW

Leave your rap at the mall!

Ya, this statement about rap is helping everything. "If you are playing your stereo then be respectful of others" might be a little more apporpriate, dont you think?

If your so surpirsed that "that we are allowed up there at all while there is runoff on the trail", then you must have been on foot? Or maybe your a land owner trying to access your land? I am just trying to give you the benfit of the doubt here by ASSUMING that you werent driving a vehicle (for pleasure, like everyone else) over the same streams you are speaking of that are being polluted by everyone but you.

I did not come here to argue, but your comment about rap music just shows what kind of person you are. Do you really care about the trail or do you care about your own interests and how everyone should accomodate you?

Lets keep it positive and just focus on the pollution whether its litter or noise pollution and leave the "white boy" stuff to yourself.

Slayer is cool, just don't blast it at 5000 watts.

Yes, I drive my rig up there, just like everyone else. But I am not trying to show off, breaking parts and dumping oil and fuel into running streams. In fact no, my rig wouldn't make it, so I stay out. You have to look at these issues from the point of the ecofreaks (i.e. enviromentalist tree huggers). They would have a cow is they saw the fluids running out of the box. The watershed is a major part of the issue up there. You should search this forum and you will learn that. On Cal4Wheel runs, they actually stop you and check under your vehicle for leaks before you are allowed to cross streams. They do this because they know the eco nazi's are watching. They monitor water quality. If you think they don't then you are quite ignorant of the facts.

My goal isn't to be stupid in the box, though. I perfer to enjoy the entire trail. There is a lot more to the rubicon than the LS. Some day you should drive out there. It's pretty cool. It's too bad that we are going to lose the entire trail because of the LS.

And yes, if they played their rap music respectfully, although I don't know how that is possible-maybe with headphones, then there wouldn't be a problem. :shaking:

Back to the topic of Litter. Would it make sense for us at this point to put garbage cans along the trail where we're finding trash? Maybe a little sign that says, if you must litter, then please put your trash in here.
That way, some of the great folks who are willing can just grab the bag full of trash on their way out. I am sure we can get both the gabage cans and bags donated.

Personally, I do not believe that having trash cans along the trail is the answer to 'trail litter'. It would most likely create an other than desired effect. I think that the best approach to 'trail litter' is to keep up the education, hand out trash bags to anyone you see without one, and most importantly, lead by example. When trail littering people are handed trashbags and actually see that others are cleaning up after them, it will sink in. Maybe not the first time, but it will sink in. Just my $.02.

No no no. Government folks doing their job monitoring water quality are all good. You have a job and are working for a living, and you enjoy the trail. I have nothing but respect for that! People are so sensitive on this site! I am talking about the Sierra Club types that try to run OUR public land from their skyscrapers in the big cities. The closest most of them have been to the Rubicon are when they drive their SUV's to Tahoe over 50 for their tree hugathons. They don't give a damn about our trail, they just want to close all forests off to everyone that isn't wearing a backpack and birkinstocks. I am sure that I now have enraged all backpackers and birkinstock wearers and SUV owners, but I don't care. I am not running for Mayor, I just don't want to see any more trails closed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Believe me, I am on YOUR side.

As far as rigs leaking, I don't see the big deal since the oil came from the earth to begin with. Also, I want to be able to wheel year round and there is always running water there. I think there will be some trash there, but if we keep showing that we are picking it up like we do I don't see a problem.

I am hating on the irresponsible wheelers that are going to ruin it for the rest of us.

Aren't we all... :shaking:

My point about YOUR statement of "I am surprised that we are allowed up there at all while there is runoff on the trail." is was I was referring to in my last post. Do you think these actions that you are complaining of "dumping oil and fuel" would be acceptable when there is no runoff? Of course you don't. I was commenting on not going to the Rubicon while there is runoff because of EROSION. Isn't that why you don't want to hit the trail when it is wet (Mr experienced)? I mean it is pretty much common sense that you should not be dumping oil and fuel on the trail regardless of the runoff.

And yes, I am one of THOSE people who do run the box. Not to show off but to wheel. I would most definitely prefer to run it while no one is around, that goes for the box or the entire trail. When I say no one, I especially mean the type of dumb $*% that would be concerned about what kind of music I am playing in my own vehicle. Mind your own business if the music is not obscenely loud, do you think you own the place? Like I said in my previous post "If you are playing your stereo then be respectful of others". I have wheeled with at least one of the POR playing that damn rap music, personally I enjoyed it (and even have some of the same CDs). :D

I have been going to the Con long before the "crowd" showed up and I assure you that I will be going until they close it down. I do my part to keep the trail in shape by treading lightly and hauling out more than I hauled in, for sure. Not sure why you started running your mouth about "white boys" and rap music but again, it shows what kind of person you are (and I am sure your mom would be proud  ).

Regarding the litter, I don't think trash cans along the trail would be the solution. Who would empty the cans when they get full (in about an hour and a half)? I think putting trash cans along the trail would promote people to fill them, quickly. I mean what are you going to do, put trash cans and signs that say "responsible people, please don't use the trash cans because they fill up to quickly. litter bugs, please use the trash cans because we can't pick up after you fast enough.". I would also be concerned about the animals getting into the garbage (as previously mentioned). Dumpsters at either end of the trail I am a fan of. A garbage truck could get in and out of there pretty easily. Education is key, if we can keep others informed it would be beneficial. As Del says you will never be able to convince them all but if you convince one then you have made progress. Thanks to all who have spent their own time at the trail head to pass out bags and paperwork, I do think that is helping.

There you go judging again. I wish I were that good! I am actually one of the most wonderful people you could ever know. I just dislike rap music. That is not a crime. That is a choice.

No. Obnoxious music is not going to get the trail shut down. If it ever happens, which I hope it doesn't, it will be irresponsible wheeling, trash, and poop that will get it shut down. We all know that.

I thought wheeling was supposed to be a family experience. I guess I need to pack ear plugs for my children to wear as we pass the LS. Along with the other instructional signs proposed for the entrance of the trail, maybe we need a big sign stating that this trail contains explicit lyrics and you must be at least 17 to go on the trail. That type of potty mouth is not allowed on the Rubicon forum, and should not be broadcast across the Rubicon.

Your right. Other people on the trail should listen to their music in a respectful manner that doesn't interfere with others enjoyment of the trail. I don't turn my music up full blast, and neither should you, regardless of genere.

Thank you and have a nice day. ;)

If you also think rap is the only music that has expicit lyrics, you don't get out much.

"Other people on the trail should listen to their music in a respectful manner that doesn't interfere with others enjoyment of the trail. I don't turn my music up full blast, and neither should you, regardless of genere." Hey, now this makes sense dude. It almost sounds like you are coming to your senses. Your statement I quoted above sounds very much like my intital suggestion of "If you are playing your stereo then be respectful of others". Maybe I am making progress here. I hope you did not initally mistake me for whom ever was pissing you off at the box???

Congrats, I think you are finally getting it. :) Just don't go to far with it, if you were actually "one of the most wonderful people I could ever know" you wouldn't be here on Pirate claiming to be that person you would be showing it with your actions. But there is still time for that, furtunatly...

Absolutely. As long as we pack out our trash and it isn't rap and we don't crap on the trail afterwards!

I don't know if my actions last year of helping with the Miller swamp project or the Wentworth water bar project would pre-qualify me for that or not? If I can get a couple issues figured out on my rig I will be out there this summer, too, enjoying soda and working on the trail!

Oh, and as for the white boy activity, I am assuming that the majority of rap is composed by people of color. I have yet to see any people of color on the trail in their rig, enjoying wheeling to it's greatest. Have you? I am sure they might have gone out on a day that I wasn't there, which is why I ask. I am not opposed to people of color enjoying the trail, it is a public right of way and everyone has a right to be there, as long as they play their music in a manner I would expect from anyone else on the trail. I would hate for anyone to get the wrong impression of me based on your comments. :p

I think this would be a good idea. There is a view that we should only support pack it in, pack it out and some even see having dumpsters at the entrances as an eroding of that policy. I disagree completely. I do fully agreee with the pack it in, pack it out philosophy...and do this myself...but view it as ideallistic not reality. Honestly, I have the same view for pooh. I'd like to see bathrooms at all entrances and disperse along the trail. Again, it is just not realistic to believe all people will carry out their pooh...even if they are required to carry buckets and wag bags. Sure most on this forum will, but were just a drop in the bucket out there.

All of this is why we need a basicly level of trail management by the agencies responsible for it...Forrest Service, County, and private land owners...with assistance from FOTR, etc. I just hope that by opening the door to managment, we don't see the trail become a weekend a bernies or some sort of lights out at 10:00PM formal camp ground. There needs to be a balance and an understanding that management costs money.

I thought that prior to the closure at Spider that it was like a weekend at Bernies

Unfortunatly it looks like things are getting better up there as far as the MEGA crowd party at the box. I guess we will see next weekend. I say unfortunatly because I think this is primarily due to the areas near to the lake being closed.

To my suprise, the trail wasnt that drity, most poeple cleaned up after themself. But still there was a little bit of "flaver soda water" can in the camp sites, but not too bad. :D

Just got back yesterday.I think for the most part the trail looked somewhat clean Found some shit flowers here and there but not like in the past. Most rigs I saw were carrying a bucket. We were camped up at the end of LS by Dollar Hill.We did stop some fucking idiots from cutting a standing dead tree. They thougt it would be ok because the tree was dead.Ran into two wheelers at just below Buck where the Trail Tough group was at.The two guys we ran into said they just finished cleaning the area (table bilt on to trees by creek). They said they just got through cleaning the site but left the big bag of unburnt shit on the camp fire..Well if this is the case the TT people should stay in Oregon.

I believe it is legal (With proper permit) to cut standing dead less that 10" at eye level. Just fyi.

yes it is legal to cut dead standing trees with a permit.. I have used that permit before.. As far as trash goes, there are some dumpsters at the end of the pavement at Loon Lake.. So you can haul your trash from the trail and dump it there instead of trying to burn your beer cans in the fire pits..

Yep...Dump my trash there all the time.

I dump my trash there as well, when they are not overflowing (you have got to be lucky though).

Ah , LittleDave , there is a difference between crude and refined oil. And FYI the crude is found 1,000's of feet down , rarely if ever at surface level . This means it is part of the ecosystem down there not on top , big difference , hello...........

"And what's up with all the rap music at LS. I thought this was a white boy activity. Leave your rap at the mall!"

Man are you guys pathetic!!!! It's called the first amendment...freedom of speech. I will play whatever the hell I want to, as loud as I want, and there's nothing you people can do about it. You complain about some rap music, when there's people up there running zoomies on thier junk, quads/bikes with straight pipes, and people popping caps with AR-15's??? Wake up man!!! :flipoff2: If you don't like what's being played, either turn up your own radio or go somewhere else.

I personally don't give a rats ass what you play. It doesn't bother me a bit. So ****....and quit your whining.

As long as we keep the trail clean is all that matters.

It doesn't bother me a bit. So STFU....and quit your bitchin.
As long as we keep the trail clean is all that matters.

It's this kind of attitude that spoils everyplace where more than one person goes. ****'n wear headphones if you want to play music loud. Why should someone else be subjected to your likes. maybe we can get the sheriff's to inforce the noise levels like they do in the cities?

and it's NOT just about keeping it clean, it's about keeping it open...

and sorry but the same amendment gives us the right to talk as we do, so you be quiet or go post somewhere else.

I am sure that all of the people who want to close our trails love people who feel just like you. You make their job easy.

People seem to forget where "rights" come from. In essence they come from the general agreement by the rest of us that we will tolerate whatever it is you are doing. Piss enough people off and you get slapped down. I may be a child of the 60s but sometimes I think we have become too tolerant.

Behave yourself, it is not that hard!

Sorry....didn't mean to offend anybody here.

Basically, let me just say this and I'll be gone. I'm not one to go to the con and blast 10,000W stereo all day and night. That's not me. Nor do I think it's right. Nor did I see or hear anybody doing it when I was there. My point is that if you respect everybody and don't blair your music at midnight or early am, you should be able to listen to whatever music that you like during the day. If I want to play rap or country or whatever loud while I'm tackling an obstacle, who cares??? I'll be on my way up the trail in a couple of minutes and you won't hear me again... I did hear some music at the LS, but the people screaming back and forth and whatever vehicle at the time was in the box was drowning out the music anyway. I think you all just need to relax, enjoy the con, and have a good time. You all seem way too uptight and picky.

I like the con just like the rest of you. And I respect the trail. I pick up my trash, i tread lightly, and I don't yell/party/blair music at 3am. But you have no right to tell me I can't listen to whatever music I like during the day.

I saw Beverley Hillbillys so I know what I am talking about. Sometimes the oil is just there and sometimes it is real deep. :flipoff2: Oh, and I think poop is OK to eat if it's still fresh.

Quit being so :rainbow:
