In the market for a truck that will be with me for many years ahead. I'm a big fan of the silverado as my father has had a few and i really like the 5.3 and the good econonmy for a fullsize. But, it seems that the dodges are a little less expensive and i like the larger cab. How do you guys like the 5.7 hemi and what mileage can be expected out of a x cab 4x4? thanks!

my dad has an 03 hemi reg cab shortbed 2wd.
its an awesome truck, but the mileage is pretty bad. i think he maxes out at 15 on the highway? i can only assume that a 4x4 quad cab would be worse.
but they 4.7 isnt any better.
check for used trucks, there are some smokin deals out there on the quad cab 2wd hemis. when i bought my 3500 there was an SLT hemi qc, 2wd, on the lot, for like 15k. it only had 30kmi on it.

Love it so far.....although I've only had it for 5700 miles (bran new - October).
I used to own a very very reliable Toyota Tacoma with 110k miles on it.
This Dodge has some BIG shoes to fill in the *reliability* department. I'm hoping it will impress me even more as time goes by.....
It's a SWEET tow rig. Gas mileage is about 13.5mpg average.
Mine is a 5.7L SLT Quad Cab Short box 4WD.
Still getting used to its 'girth' (size) compared to the Toyota.

The hemi is a good motor, as long as you don't expect it to pull a house out of its foundation. The gas mileage isnt really much to brag about from what Ive heard either.. but its a good motor that tows well, and doesnt cost nearly as much as the CTD upgrade does when buying new. That being said, I won't own another gas truck.

I have an 03 Ram 2500 quad cab 4x4 with a Hemi. Its a pretty early VIN too. I've been driving it daily for 2 1/2 years and I love it. However, I have outgrown it and I'm stepping up to a CTD this weekend. I have 53,000 miles on it with no problems at all. I just service it and put (a lot of) gas in it. Its a very solid truck and excellent to drive every day, just doesnt pull my Jeep like I need to.
12 mpg around town
15-17 highway unloaded
11 towing the jeep
FWIW i drive like a 90 yr old blind woman. i envy people who can afford to speed

Truck - '03 1/2ton w/ Hemi, 4x4 QC 8' bed
City/Highway - 12 mpg.
Towing about 5000 lbs (truck & U-Haul Auto Transport) on flat VA roads, I averaged 9 mpg @ 60 - 70 mph
Power wasn't that great on hills but it was a comfortable ride. MPGs were read straight from the in cab display.
I'm suprised to see the numbers in the post right above this one; 15-17 mpg highway and 11 towing. Did you tow in overdrive?

Yeah. One of the guys I went to Tellico with had a 1500 with 3.73s and he got similar mileage to you (he just got a gen 2 ctd). I have 4.10s I think that makes a difference with the Hemi. Cruise control adds mpg too. I keep it in OD with the cruise at 60 then drop out of OD for hills and slow down to 55. I never spin the engine over 2700 RPMs. Unloaded I stick it at 65 and dont touch the gas.
Im trading it for a used CTD even though I'm going to take a hit. forget this gas tow rig nonsense.

My buddy has a 2003 4x4 extended cab with about 30,000 or so miles on it.. He has had no major problems with it except in the last few months his gas milage has dropped from about 15-17 to 9-10 per gallon.. He's had it back to the dealer 4 or 5 times and they can't figure out why it's lost the gas milage.. Other than that he had a few minor electrical problems that they fixed with no problem..
It's a faster truck and pulls his trailer better than the Chevy he had before (Did I just say that  ) But I can say the same thing about another fellow I know that had a Dodge before he got his new one with the Hemi and he says the same thing..
He is getting ready to trade it in for a 2005 or 2006 Cummings diesel 4x4 crew cab.. He said he likes the Hemi but after driving the diesel he likes the power of the Cummings..
