So I bought my buggy from Wilson back in March, and have taken it out twice. Once to Shredder Canyon and once to the Hammers. Everywhere I went I was plagued with axle problems. The SBC 350 and 39.5" TSL's were just too much for the D44 and 9". 2 chromo stub shafts shattered and 1 stocker spit the caps, and the 9" ring and pinion have no teeth left on em and the pinion support broke off. And that was being easy on it :D

So I got a 4.56 SRW 14 bolt with a Detroit, shaved the crap outta it and welded link mounts on. And the 35 spline chromo D60 with 4.56s from Highonda should be here tomorrow. :grinpimp: Keeping it all fullwidth, and the 3.5" BS Trail Ready locks are gonna be about 2 more weeks.

Spent a couple days beefing up the rear diff cover. Left a piece of 1/4" plate hanging over from the housing so the cover won't peel back. And no, I'm not keeping it shit brown, it's just all I had and I don't want it to rust.

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=193248&stc=1

The 2" tall hunk of diff I cut off is sitting there to show how much improvement it is.

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=193249&stc=1

Upper tower is 1 1/2" .250 DOM with a 3/16" shark fin type gusset on top and I gusseted and boxed in the bottom with 1/8.

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=193250&stc=1

Still need to weld the air shock mounts on and modify the driveshaft. Will probably keep the drums for a while if they work good enough for the cutting brakes.

Finally took this sum'bitch wheelin. Took it to the Hammers yesterday. Only ran 2 trails, ran into a lot of traffic on Sledge, made some friends and then went for a high speed night run up Aftershock.

Worked great, but I definatley have to relearn how to wheel with a rig so much wider than what I'm used to. For some reason, I could not get it up the plaque rock ledge. Tried every line from middle to far right, up the crack on the left and even over the damn plaque rock itself:shaking: Couldn't make it without lots of help...but at least I didn't break anything for once:D

I pulled into the lakebed around 1:15 Sat morning, so I was probably still asleep when you hit the trail head. But it looks like I'll be going back in 2 weeks and a lot more times after that. Should put together a F-Toy/X-chassis run:cool2:

Wilson, I'll meet ya half way if you buy the CTM's and Poly driveflanges for it. Gotta rig up a temporary skid plate for the steering, too, while I wait for the Crane cover to build off of. Oh, and the PS pump is leaking, too.
Still running the 15" wheels. Had to grind a bit off the front calipers, but not too much.
Do you know if the steering ram has internal stops in it, BTW?

No offense dude, but watching you trying to get up that ledge convinced me to stick with my Toyota axles. I know there is no perfect formula in building a rockcrawler, and I've seen FW rigs take alternative lines, but where else do you go on that obstacle?

For that $$ I could turn my current truck into a wheeler :flipoff2: Not sure on internal stops, call Station or look up his thread in general on ram specs. Same for the pump, tell him where it's leaking and see if he can offer some advice. It was a brand new pump. I think the bottom res. hose leaks a little bit, could it be that? I can pm you Sean's number when I get home.

Doc, I'm not offended, I was pretty frustrated at it myself. But it forces me to take new more creative lines instead of the same old line that I just walked easy with Toy axles (if they didn't break:rolleyes: ). But it's worth it because that is the 1st time in 3 years that I've gone to JV without breaking. And I'm no throttle jocky.

Also, I wanted to unstack those rocks, but we had 2 rigs in our group with leaking radiators/hoses and we decided to get back to camp ASAP before more problems arose. I figured if anybody was worried enough to bitch about it, they could unstack them:flipoff2:

Should've stopped by and said hi so you could talk trash in person:D I didn't even see you.

Yeah, it does demand different lines that's for sure, and I can totally understand the no breakage factor, I think I've been lucky in that I've only broken one long-side inner front and one stock rear axle, in multiple trips to the Hammers.

BTW, that Solder-Seal came from my toolbox, I hope it worked. And I did stop by...I watched you sweating your ass off stacking those rocks, you looked a little frustrated.

We'll (Total Karnage (http://totalkarnage.net), be back for the Bender Jambo for sure, last year we brought a keg of Sin City Ale so come on by. We're usually on the Back Door side of the lakebed.

Have fun with that rig.

Just trying to get everything done that I had in mind. Want to get all the big projects out of the way so when I move and have no $$ the rig won't be causing problems and needing more $$ dumped into it.

But I'll still probably get into other projects with it...

Just making more headroom. I tossed around all my options, and this was the best one, IMO. Cage was sturdy enough. Sean's has been rolled hard and held up fine. I might actually leave the X brace out for more room this time around. Not sure yet.

Cruiser hood is still in the plans. But I either have to widen it to fit around the fender tubes and sit flush with the dash, or cut the outer edges off. Still has 1/2 a Toyota frame, 1/2 a Toyota t-case, and 1/2 a Toyota grill:D

Very nice! I've always like the profile of the FTOY. Can't wait to see it finished.

Doing a cruiser hood on mine also to match the grill Mike put in. Now just finding one is the problem..Poly performance has hoods, but they are a little pricey.

The front of the pass. seat is on top of the t-case already, and the back of both seats are tight against the upper link mounts. If I dropped the link mounts enough to get the room I needed, I'd have around 200%+ AS...

Wilson
02-06-2006, 05:23 PM
The case could be clocked down more, but it was all a tight fit when I put it together. I went with the cheap plastic seats because I had to cut half of the bottom out of the passenger seat to clear the clocked D300. I would think that a combo of clocking the case down, notching the frame and rocking the seats back may have netted you enough room.....but I can see where you're coming from on the link mounts.

Just kidding, I think he hit some big whops or a jump and ds compressed too much and bottem out hard and took out that bearing cap.

is it an off the shelf pillow block? does it fit the stock 2 piece toy shaft?

I was going to run the stock toy one for my front shaft but something solid might be nice.

No, it's an all new bearing assembly, not pillow block. Was that the same jump that took out the starter? Driveshaft must be too short?

I was running down the main road out of the lakebed at the Hammers. I used to know the road really well, but it changed and I hit some unexpected whoops. I had just lengthened the driveshaft 2" after swapping in the Toy rear mains, and it bottomed out. Hit the starter again, too:shaking: I need to get those bumpstops in!

Jess got me a new bearing. But the Hendrix unit slides over the stock shaft and eliminates the crappy stock bearing piece.

I had mentioned it in another thread, but the stock toy carrier bearing sucks, didnt last 1 day on my setup. a 1 1/2" pillowblock slides over a stock toy 2 piece perfectly. $20 greasable. it replaces the whole assembly.

but, I guess what you have would work fine with out it bottoming out. :D

Well, I got a little more time to work on it. Been waiting for the rain and wind to stop since I have to work on it outside...

I crushed one of the air shock mounts last time out, so I made a splice and sleeves. Made a spacer out of EMT to hold the tabs at 1 5/16" while I weld (shocks call for 1 1/4", little extra helps get the shock and spacers in), and plug welds all over.

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=237817&stc=1&d=1144038191

Was welding in between the gusts of wind. Got the overhead bars and B pillars done. But it wore out my old HFT notcher, should have a new ProTools notcher showing up soon. Then I can finish up the tube work.

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=237818&stc=1&d=1144038191

Did a little painting while it was raining during the week...

http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=237819&stc=1&d=1144038191

Turns out I have to cut off the air shock tabs. Welded them pointing straight at the lower mounts, but they bind hard at full droop. I think I'm gonna have to take a few days off of work to get this thing ready for the Bender Jambo.

Thanks. Update, ok...

More rain today. Did a couple little things. Made a strap to hold the battery down (relocated under the driver seat), threaded connectors for all-thread will be welded to the top of the belly pan to catch the bolts.

Also got a new toy to play with. 1" dimple die from Kieth. I had to figure it out the hard way (the wrong way) a couple times, but I got it to work. The gusset is for my front bumpstops.

Also got a little more painting on the wheels done. 1 rock ring left.

Not with the plastic seats. I hacked out a bunch of the old seat mounts and moved a couple verticle supports, and it just barely tucks in vertically. Side terminals are right at the little window between the t-case mount structure and the bottom of the frame. It's about 3" from the exhaust, think that's enough?

Dimples look cool, and it is way stiffer than the solid sheet, but what a PITA. No press, so I have to run a bolt through and hit it with the impact (already siezed 1 bolt), then the enitre sheet bows a bit and I have to straighten it out against the anvil. No 1" drill, so I have to plasma the hole and then clean it up. Would be nice to have someone to learn this stuff from. Dammit Hobie:flipoff2:

Hmmm, sounds close possibly for pre- muffler exhaust and that close to the header (back pressure = extra heat). Wind it up for a while and put your hand next to the battery. If anything a small heat shield should be enough. And I take back the part about being jealous of the dimple die, with as much work as you go through for it :flipoff2: Get a press and some hole-saws

Thursday it was the rear driveshaft CV joint. Fixed it Friday and then broke the studs that that hold the U bolt plate to the front diff and that side of the axle fell away from the buggy. Broke the front shaft in the process.

Thanks, I am really happy with how it turned out. Doesn't look super high, but I feel like I have a much better view.

As for the studs, I think I may have to drill them out and tap them to the next bigger size. But I think the problem is with the U bolts loosening, and the studs not. I've been torquing everything before I go out for a weekend, and I should be doing it between trails. They were always really loose by the end of the weekend.

On this one, I welded a piece of .250 angle and then gusseted it to the frame. Looks like the gussets are not on in this pic, but they extend to the top of the frame rail. I've also done it with .250 flat plate welded to the bottom of the frame and gussets along the outside. The hanger itself is 1.75 x .120 tubing with wrangler bushings and gussets.

Carnage - 1 oil pan, 1 rear shaft, 1 hood mount tab, 2 hoods, some of Tim's pretty new panels and paint:flipoff2: and 1 broken track bar bolt. Oh, and Jeremy with the Zuki moon buggy thing destroyed his aluminum wheels, fried the alternator and put a screwdriver through the air horn on his carb:laughing:

We ran jack, sunbonnet and hwy 20 before I got too low on 'pane. Rode shotgun on sledge with Sean. Then Jeremy taco'd his wheel. We speed wheeled back to camp for Sean's spare, and made it back up sledge from the entrance just past the mail box in about 8 or 10 minutes. Sunday we went over to dirty sanchez where Tim was killing it and I broke. Then we watched Tim go crazy on backdoor.

I think it's time to park it for a while and take care of some of the details and the stuff I scraped together last minute before a run...and definatley some better driveshafts:shaking:

Dude thanks,
That's a nice picture of my red Suburban.:D I think I ran Clawhammer that day. Too bad I parted it out so I can build a Formula 4.

Well, I was looking through some pics, and decided to add some of what I've done since the last update.

1st thing I did was fix that driveshaft. 2.5" schedule 80 pipe fit the bill for a part Toy and part Chevy shaft. Leave a little weld on the Toy end (tapered to help center it), take a little extra off the Chevy end, and grind off the weld inside the pipe with a super small over used grinding disc.

Got a new oil pan. Chrome was the only thing in stock that would fit...
I didn't want to put a hole in this one, so I formed some plate over it for a skid. Welded up and flapped smooth, can't even tell it's there!

Took the buggy out to the ProRock finals last year just for fun. I had just made the soft top (well, I did all the design, layout and cutting. Moms helped out with the pining and sewing:D ) and put 32 spline outputs in the t case.

Great fun, and I didn't break, but I did slip the rear shaft out on course...made for some good testing of that front output and 4th gear peelin out:smokin:

Cool, how'd you do at the finals?

1st after the 1st day, but slipping the d-shaft made me miss all but the 1st gate on 4th course day 2, and bumped me down to 3rd. Courses were tight and the buggy is long and wide, so the competition was still pretty even.

I gotta say, it was a blast. I don't know what the other F-toys thought about me running with them and digging 42" holes in the courses, but it was the first comp where I was relaxed and having fun on every course because the points didn't matter.

I learned a lot more about the rig and how to drive it, too.

Were you using front digs, or trying to keep as even as possible? Where's the tent trailer? Geiger said I could compete if I towed a tent trailer behind me.

Man, I barely ever had those rear wheels engaged:D I was front digging all over those courses, even when I didn't need to!

I don't think Chris ever noticed me out there. Gotta have good pics of the boss and not a single one of me in the coverage. It's cool, though. On The Marq had it covered great. 1700+ pics of the event!

What are you doing playing on line in the middle of the day? Go down there and turn your heater on, and get to work.:flipoff2:

you mean the 2nd day where i went right behind you and you thrash all the courses and i lost first place because of it:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

j/k...you really didnt trash all the courses, just that one obstacle where you lost your rear drive shafts. but it was all good, thats where you impressed your new desert groupies:flipoff2:

i have a pic of them....hang on..i will find it for all the pbb to look at.:flipoff2:

I'm in the middle of putting a d60 / 14B combo on my F-toy right now and will be adding pics. of the build soon. Wanted to know about your D-lines. I saw you had Toy's on the output side and Chevy style at the pinion flange. What did you get the Chevy end off of to fit the D60 flange? Did you do the same in the rear? Toy top and Chev bottom? I've also seen custom flanges that fit the d60 and are drilled for toy d-lines. Trying to decide which way to go.

The 60 has the Toyota conversion flange from High Angle Driveline. 14b has the factory 1350 yoke. Got the slip yoke and complete drive shaft out of a 3/4 ton Suburban at the junkyard to make the new shaft.

How much one of those flanges go for?

Im4yotas

$110 with hardware. Pretty sure I would have broken the stock little U joint that came with the 60 a few times already. No problem with the Toyota joint down there:D

I'll be putting in an order tom. Thanks for the input. Do you know if he makes anything for the rear 14 bolt?

Looks like I will be ordering 2 flanges. Any pics. of those 14 bolt versions? You would think the 60 u-bolts and 14 bolt u-bolts would be tougher than the toy setup.:shaking:

I know I've seen that he has them. I tired to search and couldn't find the post. I'm working out of town tomorrow otherwise I'd just drive by and check for you :flipoff2:

Soon to place an order also. I've never had problems with my Toy U-joints even after bending the ears. Seems like everyone I wheel with using the U-joint straps has to replace them quite often, sometimes breaking the little cap tabs on the flange.
