got an 80 e-locker, thought it would bolt right in-HA!
anyhow, need a longer spline axle shaft for the clutch engagment side, long side axle i think. will an axle shaft from an 80 fit into my 55??
i'm planning on installing into the front , my axles are from 81 fj40

or is it possible to extend the splines on the existing shaft?

You need either a custom long slined axle shaft from CVunlimited or the 70 series one, as far as I remember.

Bill, call George Stuckey at CV Unlimited (http://www.cvunlimited.com/) and get their custom inner shaft for the J4/J5 with the splines for the 80 locker. It was under $200 I think.

Other than changing the flange on your driveshaft, that shoujld be the only mechanical mods you have to make.

Here is a schematic for a simple harness I got from Phil Pasciak, plus some sketchy notes to myself.

notes and schematic (http://www.birfield.com/~morgan/tech/electric_locker/)

I wired it up OK, but I had the relays wired wrong and needed Phil to sort that part out when I got to Slickrock Campground in Moab last year.

Here are a ton of pics from the spring-over, shackle-reversal, electric locker install, et cetera, from April of last year. You can see some specific pics of the e-locker install.

SOA, etc. (http://www.birfield.com/~morgan/tech/soa_etc/)

Did you go used or new?

I recently got a rear full-floating axle from an FJ75, and I'm considering putting a used 80 electric-locking diff in it, and getting some custom shafts like Beanz2 with splines on both ends so I can run locking hubs in the back. Yeah, I know it's dorky, but it's cool too. Right now I've got the stock semi-floater in the back with a Powertrax no-slip and a trail-spare diff from a pinion failure on the pig run.

thanks morgan,
thats what im looking for.
although i did like the idea of using a shaft from a 70 that would be way cool to have fj40,55,70,and 80 parts in one truck!!
i have a no slip in the rear axle too and with the e-locker up front i should be good to go for most stuff, think i will try to make it to moab. when is the time to go, is it with tlca?

Well, I like the TLCA runs for two reasons. The people and the Cruisers. You might as well plan your trip to Moab and be among friends (and spare parts!)

See you in May!

May it is!!!

also went out to test the no slip, had oldest daughter and wife in the mini truck following. after watching the 55 go through its paces with 3 body lift and no sway bar on stock axles and worn out springs, chrystal(daughter) christened the truck whith the nickname of JELLO!
see ya

So Bill, did you ever fix that "minor" motor mount problem?

:D

Looking good Bill. Yeah, I'm kinda in the same boat. Gotta go get smogged next week. Mine's running pretty good for the moment. I'll be taking it to Vegas and then to Canyonlands next month. This is my busy season right now with work, but afterwords would like to hook up with you.
