I need some input! 231 V6 or 350??????????
First here is the specs on my rig. 68 CJ5, SOAs w/ YJ springs & 3/4 elyptic rear, D44s 4.88s, 35x12.5 G/Yr Mts, TH350 w/ Dana18 transfer. I did Power steering and power brakes as well.
It has a wasted 79 231 in it (started puffin while running Patriot here in CO). I can't decide if I should rebuild the 231 or drop a Buick 350 in it. One of the problems is that I have a multi-port injection system for the V6 and a new cam/lifter set. The axles are offset to the passengers side and I like that, so I don't want to get away from the Dana 18 yet. That leaves me w/ the problem of grenading it if I get to much torque on it. The 231 was pretty tired when I started wheeling in this Jeep. In the next 3 weeks I'm putting 38x12.5 TSLs on it, Hydro assist steering and an alternator welder, so I could use the extra ponies.
Thanks,
Greg

it depends on what kind of wheeling u do..all rockcrawling u should be fine with the 6 but if u do a lot of sand and mud go with the v8:smokin:

stick with the 6, it'll be way cheaper and still have injection, which is nice
good luck!

Yes, factory 84-85. I picked it up off a running vehicle w/ everything included. I haven't got it on yet, what do you know about these?:D

i have the same set up in the garage too, i have been wanting to put it on but haven't it shuld work so long as your cam is fairly mild and you run the auto' which sounds like you are. Street and performance usedto market that setup i haven't seen it in any of their catalogs lately but they were very informative several years ago. The thing stopping me is i run a sm 465 manual gear box and i am not sure how that is going to work. the 231 is a very good motor i have had one in my (toyota --sorry i know this is the jeep page) since 1985, they lug very well at low rpm the only complaint i had was no injection. keep us informed i would like to see if it works out for you. the other big advantage of v6 over v8 is you are going to get about 5 more inches for your rear driveshaft

Stick with the 231... that way you won't break the D44s.

Why cant that set up be used with a standard tranny?

the program in the ecu is not set up to interpret the tps input to rpm to engine vacumm that occurs when you are shifting--going from wide throttle low vaccum to closed throttle high vacumm and back again i have heard it will kick in trouble codes and maybe put it into limp mode-- if someone can prove this wrong i will go for it-- but i think it is correct

Actually I just swapped the manual out of it for the auto. The auto allows for much better control RK crawlin. I have found it also does 2 things: first, it takes the shock off of the drive train in a situation where a manual would allow the force to break parts. Two, the axle ratio does not have as much affect on up hill crawling, give it a little gas if you want to move, down hill still sucks. With the neutral safety switch off, I can start it in drive or reverse in sticky situations. My opinion is that if you want to crawl, go auto.
Getting back to the MP injection. AS far as I know, there is no speed sensor for the auto trans, I think it would work w/ the manual tranny in the Toy. I will do photos and writeup on the install for you.

you could be right about that i don't remember about a speed sensor-- i hope you are cause i want to try it-- i also have a 85 grand nat'l turbo motor that i want to put in another project but was holding off for the same reason--i'm a manual trans man for life--

Thanks Duane that makes sence. Is there other years of of factory fuel injection that would work better.
As for which engine I say the 231, it fits much better, you need all the room you can get for that rear driveshaft.

not as a direct bolt on to the 231--old mule points out that there is no speed sensor on this setup so it may be possible hopefully someone will chime in who has actually used this set up w/manusl trans
