Gentlemen:

I need some help! I am installing a 4 speed tranny in my early 74 with a three speed. I have seen on this forum that the three speed transfer case is preferable to the four speed transfer case. Since I will have to buy an adapter kit to make the four speed mate up with the three speed transfer case, I bought a toyota manual. The three speed transfer case is supposed to be lower geared than the four speed transfer case.

Upon looking in the manual to see how involved this conversion would be, I noticed that the manual states that there is no difference between the two cases. Both are listed as 2.30 to 1. If the ratios are the same, why do most of you guys prefer the three speed transfer case? If there is no real benefit in adapting the three speed to the four speed transmission, I will not do it and save myself about 200.00. Thanks, HOOT Murray

A: your manual is wrong.

B: the 3spd case up til early 74 had a low range of 2.313 and the 74 up 4speed case had a 1.99:1 ratio.

C: In my opinion, the swap is not worth the trouble or my time to gain such a minimal amount of low range.

What you need to do the "conversion" is to get a gear with the right gear count and the 16 spline input. Then get a datsun b210 axle bearing(~$45). I can't remember the dimensions exactly, but it works. Dont get one of the kits for $$$, if you are set on doing this I have the gear, brand new.

I agree with Jeff, I would not do it unless the 4speed has no case and you have too. It is not much lower, and the 3 speed case is noisier. I did it in my FJ55 and it really is not that much lower...
