What does it take to pull a jeep that is on a trailer? Can a 34' class A with a 454 pull at 45 MPH+ up mountains and cruise at 65 ? What are the limits of these motorhomes?Do most of y'all have diesels? I won't flat tow my jeep!!!!

I'm in the first stages of converting a old 40' trailsways bus (30,000 lbs)...I'm looking for a 425hp catapillar engine...that should do it. :)

Ricky...seeya... my parents old mo home was a 30foot class c with a 454 and its towed a crap load over the years including out 20 ft sea ray and my dads old cruiser (yup 3 towed) will cruise up the grades at 45 easily in 2nd gear , just dont push em and they do just fine. their new mo home is a 38ft v-10 tag axel and its gonna rock if they let me use it! we still own teh old but might be up for sale soon, its a steal if they sell it! jiMMy

Here is a picture of my 26' long 460 powered 1983 motor home. The trailer weighs 1300, and the truck is 3500. The motor home weighs 10,500 loaded. At sea level it drives ok with the trailer. Planning to go to Moab in 2 weeks, I expect it's going to be first gear and 25 MPH over the passes at 8000 '. On flat ground it will pull 65MPH.

Hey dirt, some of the roads here on the East side are really twisty winding roads. Wonder how much practice it will take to learn to drive them?? I have seen where these places are selling the old MCI and Eagle shells pretty reasonable. Whats the deal converting to Cat vs Detroits? Did yours originally have a 3208? You got an automatic, Right :smokin:
Where would you park this at Tellico??

The tight roads can be a problem with a long rig like that. Busses are a great deal, they are very heavy duty and ride nice with tons of storage. Mine came with a 8V71 Detroit (non turbo) and a 4 speed. The older 2 stroke detroits are kinda weak on top-end pulling power, and they smoke pretty bad. I'm looking for a allison 740 auto, or maybe a 10 speed roadranger w/od (if I can talk the wife into it). I have a bud who got his 40' motorhome back into Tellico (on the TN side), so I figure I can make it.
