I have the dana 50 ford super duty front end. I wand to get rid of the ball joint style knuckles and go with the king pin style. Im getting a set of those from dedenbear and I figured if I was going to do all that cutting or have a machine do the cutting I might as well have them move the chunk over too. Cause this axle dosent have but about a 1/2 inch of steel to weld to on the tube and I need to put coils on it. My question is; does anybody know the axle tube size and where would I find some tubes? Are there any rearends with the same size tubes?

Kinda of in the same situation. D60 front off an 94 and were going to be turning to get proper driveline alignment BUT I think what your doing could be problematic, changing steering knuckle ends  ....thats a bit tricky  , pretty sure people have done it before but better get a check list going first:
welding capability
strength
design
correct articulation of turning.
My "dos" cents.. :flipoff2: .

I dont think it would be that tricky just as long as the machine shop has a jig that can hold it straight, and there shouldnt be a problem with the welding, and it would be just as strong or not stronger than the way it was before. I dont get what you mean by steering articulation and design. See I was going to have the machine shop drill out the holes for the welds on the chunk, and then take out the old tubes completly, tapper and press in the new ones reweld them on the chunk and then weld on some kingpin style inner C's. I dont know how exspensive that would be (machine shop). I just wand to know what size the axle tubes were and where to find them?

hey chris. 1. when the axle pumpkin housing is made the ends are smaller than the tubes during this process the housing is hotter than HELL expanding the ends...the tubes are inserted and cooled than plug welded..almost impossible to duplicate :mad3: . 2. ARTICULATION: when a axle is first "mocked-up" or jigs are set they are for the assigned parts any modification without the original jig would be a time consuming process in addition you/or whomever would need to align each end knucklevertically plus parallel and horizontal to the axle housing itself. 3. welding I agree is a stronger process but I only trust my welds or a welder i've known for a while.
YES it can be done but check around with shops that have done this....
:D GOOD LUCK YOUNG JEDI!!!

The tube size is 3.5 inches.
I went thru a rack of rear axle housings and didnt find another tube size the same!!!!
I just retubed a D50 for the rear of my YJ and bought new tubes for both sides and could get you in contact with the place I got mine................

yea id like to know where to find them. and which do you think would be better, get the full measurment of the axle, figure out how far over i want the chunk, then cut the tubes and reweld them together. Or just have a shop put new tubes in.?
