Glenn 03-03-2002, 04:07 PM We get grouped together as 4wheelin, ecology destroying, redneck asshole garbage dumpers. I was up on Jergens trail today and here's some pics of garbage and trash dumped there... Even a fridge and live ammo (not to mention all the used up ammo). I sure hope some 4wheeler didn't do this but even if it was Joe Blow in his Izusu 2 wheeler, we get blamed for it... We all got in trouble today too but that's on another thread... Oh yeah, this is right next to the trail too... :(

We have the same problem at all the cool spots around Phoenix.
Piles of garbage full of bullet holes. A friend of mine recently got high centered on a Water heater tank laying in the middle of Raw Deal. (One of Az's most littered trails.) It becomes hard to get angry at people who want to close trails when you see that kind of crap. Too bad a few idiots are going to ruin it for everyone else.
APRIL'S RAINMAN 03-03-2002, 04:41 PM OUCH THAT HURTS EVERYTIME I SEE THAT . I SEE THAT ALL THE TIME HERE IN THE DESERT . ALOT OF THEM THINK THEY CAN TREAT THE LOCAL AREA JUST LIKE THEY WERE STILL IN MEXICO.I CAUGHT ONE GUY DUMPING EVERTHING FROM OLD ROLLED UP CARPET TO OLD BUCKETS OF PAINT I WENT TO TAKE HIS LISENCE PLATE DOWN AND IT WAS A EXPIRED MEXICO TAG !IN THE US ! I TOLD HIM TO GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE BEFORE I CALL BORDER PATROL ! HE SAID I SPEAK NO ENGLISH AND CONTINUED WHAT HE WAS DOING.
The Jerk 03-03-2002, 04:42 PM WOW, ive never seen it that bad there, what a bunch of un educated jerks that just dump thier crap when and where ever they feel like it, dont they know there are free dump days every so often! GEESH thats terible! jiMMy
Why do people do stupid stuff like that? Around here, they make those kind of dumps in the streams so all their trash washes downstream and spoils miles of river. Usually its locals living within a mile or two.
Here's a suggestion that has worked on the streams here a couple times - if you see a new pile, take a minute and look through it for identifying items like junk mail, utility bills etc. You'd be amazed how often these not-so-bright folks leave stuff like that in their illegally dumped trash. If you find anything, leave it there and call the sheriff. Even if its not legal proof to justify a fine, a visit by the sheriff will make these people think twice next time before they dump.
Glenn, I've never gotten off my ass to help before but I hearby state that if you or anybody else orginaizing a clean up of a trail in northern california needs a Fulesize to help haul shit then let me know. My '73 F-250 4x4 is availible. I only need to know where the proper dumps are to haul the trash to. Can a fullsize get far enough up the rubicon to help with the hualing out of trash?

That is an excellent idea, one I've used several times also. I live adjacent to about a million acres of BLM land, and its amazing what I find just a short distance from my house. I love it, though, when the morons leave trash with their name on it, the Sheriff's Dept. will usually pay them a visit. It pisses me off to no end, I'd just love to catch someone some day, it will be interesting to watch them eat their garbage.:mad2:
OOP'S 03-03-2002, 05:05 PM I was up at Bassi yesterday and someone decided that they did not want there cab-over camper and dumped it along the trail. That sucks big time and they wonder why trails get closed!!!!

white knight 03-03-2002, 05:10 PM That's disgusting!!!!!!
The sad part is that it is quite common. We've come accross the same kind of garbage- matresses etc.
A lot of the time it's high school kids and grad parties.
It just sucks that four wheelers take the rap for all of it.
Time to educate and maybe even shun some of our own.
2Dogs 03-03-2002, 05:30 PM This worked for a MTB club in Dallas -
Elect a trail steward (usually from a local club).
This person periodically checks the trail for abuse and idiots.
This person can also organize trail days - repair and cleanup events. Trail days can be enjoyable - afterwards have a BBQ or go wheelin etc....
This club (DORBA) also kept track of volunteer hours and at the end of the year we had a huge party with prizes from industry vendors going to the people with lots of hours.
We took over parks/areas and the neighbors or Rangers ended up loving the service that we provided.
2Dogs 03-03-2002, 05:33 PM One more thing - I'll help if you guys get a cleanup day organized.
That are needs some help BAD but it could be considered hazerdous waste. Ammo is the least of my worries - be careful of syringes these days!
scoutver5.7 03-03-2002, 05:45 PM They're true assholes who do that kinda crap. I'd like to catch 'em. I'd love to beat the crap out of them.
Whenever we see stuff like that we have to clean it up. If ya catch somebody dumping trash report 'em, since it's illegal to kill 'em.
Hey Glenn,
I'm also a retired USAF MSGT!!!! (1994)
randy6971 03-03-2002, 05:45 PM I likely will never have the pleasure of wheeling in the south-west and seing all that garbage burns me up here what I`d do about all that mess, I`d get a pile of ya`s and pick through the garbage untill I found a name and address have like 5 or 6 trucks there at the bump site clean all the garbage up drive to this persons place and quietly unload it all on his front lawn while he is sleeping when he wakes up in the morning and sees the mess he phones the cops, they show up and look for a name to find out who it belongs to only finding out it is the guys garbage who called them not the table turns he is now ordered to clean up his pile of junk, now that the cops are aware of the garbage belonging to him he can`t dump it on a trail now and if he does call the cops and tell them you found a pile of garbage and a name of who it might belong to and with the cops already knowing this guy will try anything with his garbage he will be up shit creep without a paddle. just my .02 worth.
It`s only illegal (not lawful)to kill them if you get caught.
Kurtastrophe 03-03-2002, 05:49 PM In Gilbert, MN, the locals are fighting the MN4WDA from cleaning up their local trails, and bringing business to their area. It seems they are pissed they no longer have a free dumping area, the idiots!!! :mad3:
Welby 03-03-2002, 05:49 PM That kind of thing makes me sick :mad2:... There's an area near where I live called "Creek Falls", that has probably the best wheeling around for miles (Not that I'd know from driving it, my Jeep can't handle it  )... But it's the same thing there, garbage everywhere, graffitti, and shot up, burned cars. Every time I go back there, there's a different car (Stolen, I'm sure) back there riddled with holes and burned to a crisp. Definitely a place where you don't want to have to leave your rig by itself.
People are such fawkin' pigs. Bad part is, if they'd ban wheeling back there, it wouldn't stop that kind of thing. It's not a wheeler thing, it's a pig of a human being thing. Bad thing is, the greenies do associate the garbage with the wheelers, good ones or not :(.
ChevyGal 03-03-2002, 08:03 PM Ok... I was out one evening with a friend (off of Hwy 16 and Latrobe) taking some pictures of the sunset... this idiot comes rolling out in his truck and dumps some crap. We walk over and tell the jerk to pick it up and get outta there... he said screw you and basically did it anyhow. He was a big guy and we were two females and I really knew getting into something physical would be pointless..... when I got home I got to thinking.... if we see crap wads like this doing stuff if I took a picture of them and got a good shot along with their plate number... what can I do with it? I know I can report them to the authorities.... but someone once while on a trip to Hollister said... only bad thing about reporting them is it gets marked down and gives the greenies and cops and whoever else more of a reason to dislike off roaders... this guy was an off roader... I mean he had to use 4 wheel to get up to where he was... not to mention he did have what looked to be a really nice trail rig. Anyhow my question is... do I report the jerk to the cops or whoever... or post the plate # and pic I could take of the dude and his stuff next time for all to see on here? It pisses me off to see junk like that being done and I'd love to really nail someone doing it...!!
Thats a tough one...
on one hand you wanna turn the guy in and get his ass in trouble...but then ya got the greenies finding out thing, which I wouldnt be a BIT surprised if it was true...
If I was you I would post the pic on the general 4x4 section and maybe some other boards... Maybe someone will know him and he will see it thus embarasing him... M9ight not give a shit though...
Thats some sorry shit!

We see this kind of stuff all over the place here in Nevada as well. It really has nothing to do with anything short of pure laziness or don't want to pay landfill rates. I'm not justifying it in the least. I think assholes that do this kind of stuff should be forced to clean it up then put on a cleanup duty with all the other litterbugs wearing, "I'm a moron" orange vest along the roadsides. That way all their friends can come by and honk and wave at there idiot friends.
This way exceeds the pickup more than you brought rule of taking trash out off the trails. I'd suggest talking with the land owner/BLM/etc and organize a cleanup. And get the media involved! Ask them to come out to see what good 4wheelers do and that yes, we can be stewards of the land.
APRIL'S RAINMAN 03-04-2002, 08:47 AM there is a local hangout here called red sands it has a combo of trail stuff . dunes as well as high speed wheeling on the back pipe line roads. what really gets me made is both half's of the property is private land and they let us use it but the locals being the dumb ass they are keep burning cars and dumping shitt there .. you would not believe what is hiding under the sand .i have seen at at times after heavy wind storms .(ugly) to say the least. one of the locals even is tring to start a local buisness renting quads and bbQ on the land but after you see it it just turns my stomach. i try to keep this a family thing for me ,and i don't want my daughter to think this is the way 4 wheelers treat our land.but here they seem mostly on hanging out and drinking than 4 wheeling and i never see them take there trash back with them.i go to relaxe with my family and not think of life problems not get drunk.( well thats all i have to say about that!!)...forest gump:(
Azrckcrawler 03-04-2002, 09:05 AM I don't think any amount of education is going to stop the current generations from dumping trash. But what if one day a year all the schools had to take the kids out on a cleanup. One club member commented on the last cleanup, "if people just picked up someone elses trash for a day, they'd see things a whole different way." Maybe a national day set aside for cleanups? Our favorite idea was to just issue hunting permits for dumpers :D

Be careful. If you try to take a picture of someone like that, you better be ready to ROLL, have a big friend nearby, or strap on a 357 Mag (my favorite). Otherwise, you may find yourself in a bind or (at the least) without a camera. Ass holes like that would almost certainly not hesitate to take your camera if they see you taking their picture like that. Me, I would be sorely tempted to just leave his carcass on top of his trash anyway. Yeah, I know, that would cause still more problems, and if he didn't force the issue I wouldn't actually do it, so don't start lecturing me on two wrongs and all that… I did say "tempted", not "I would just blow that fawker away!".
randii 03-04-2002, 01:25 PM We get grouped together as 4wheelin, ecology destroying, redneck asshole garbage dumpers. I was up on Jergens trail today and here's some pics of garbage and trash dumped there... The folks who want that trail closed presented similar pictures at the planning meetings. Every time that happened, a 'wheeler stood up and pointed out that this was all at the 2WD-accessable section of the road, and that no such dumps existed down in the 4WD sections of the trail... then we'd speak of our trail clean-up activities and encourage that the BLM enter into an adopt-a-trail arrangement with a local club....
See, this is easy enough to reduce as an issue if motorized access folks speak up. The problem occurs when these meetings por discussions occur without us. That's when idiots warp pictures like these to suit their own agendas... It sucks when ANYONE warps the truth (or even if they don't know what the truth is, but present an argument anyway) to suit their needs. I hate it when politicians do it, and I hate what I saw at the access meetings for this road. There are a handful of folks who live up around there that will say or do ANYTHING to eliminate access.. to everyon but themselves. It is interesting when we talk about locking the gate that the discussion never moves to locking the gate at the Kanaka Valley entrance to the BLM land. Why? Because the Kana Valley residents still have a key.
They want the public land that adjoins their property to be manages to their needs. Let's get this straight -- they bought property next to publicly held land, and now they want to keep the public off. I understand that it would be pretty cool for them to have the land just over their back fence managed according to their own desires, while all the rest of pay taxes to support that land... but  if they wanted control over the land, they should have purchased it
This sort of pig-headed selfishness frustrates the hell out of me.... and for that land, seems to be the root of the problem. The landowners in that area don't give a damn about the endanged plants in the area -- it is just a means to an end to them... and that end is all of us paying to keep their backyard up for them, paying to police it for 'trespassers', and paying to enhance their propert value.
The four-wheeled users are in the spotlight, but the real stench of politics and selfish assholery exudes from further up the hill, where the property owners work the system to get what they want, everyone else bedamned.
Randii (frustrated at the bullshit that surrounds this simple little trail down to one of the prettiest parts of the American River)
RadioFlyer91 03-04-2002, 02:34 PM Yep that is a huge problem back home. Being only like 10 mins form Mexico you get al the natives that live in the US dumping there trash like they where back home. All this really ticks me off:mad3: they also dump at the local trails. There are only 2-3 trails in town and we have been run out of tow on them. City acaully finced off one and made it a bird sancuary or something and I am pretty sure that the reson was all the trash the was getting dumped there.
Ya I like the idea of looking threw it and finding there mail, me and my family have acually dont that a couple of times becuse we get jerks dumping there trash right behind are place becuase we live out side of town they think they can do what ever they want.
AAAAAGGHHHHHHHHH:mad3: jsut talking about it pissis me off so I am going to stop and go to Generalk chit chat and find something funny to read and get my mind off this.

At the time I had my 300-600mm lense and could have taken the pic from far enough away he wouldn't have seen me (I didn't actually get one, like I said I got home and got thinking about it and wish now I got one. At the time I was pissed until it dawned on me here we were confronting a strange guy in the middle of nowhere and he could seriously messed us up....) I'd love to bust someone like that... however I'd still be kinda worried if I posted it if I got one and it turned out to be a user on here... last thing I need is someone going off on me and coming after me because I busted them not following the rules....
Rockcrusher 03-04-2002, 09:22 PM Here's another thing that pisses me off. These ruins date back the the 1870's and the taggers think they're their own private canvas.
BigDan 03-05-2002, 12:26 PM Its easy to talk about a clean up, but there's not a lot of action going on here. I live about 10 minutes away from the trail. I'm avaiable for a clean up of the upper trail area right now. Weekdays afternoon and weekends. I'm going to clean it up with a few other of us from MHT, is anyone going to help us?????? Not to be stingy or anything but the dump is getting awfuly expensive so a little bit of money could sure help us out.
Dont sing it....Bring it

I don't think reporting somebody gives the greenies any more ammunition, they can get all the ammunition they want just looking at the mess left behind. Like Glenn said at the start of this thread, they assume it's 4 wheelers anyway. The important thing is that you, a 4 wheeler, are acting to stop it.
Hey, Rockcrusher, that stuff burns me too. You can fight those guys best by sand-blasting it off as soon as possible, they get really pist when all their "hard work" disappears.
FULLSIZE 03-05-2002, 02:51 PM we have the same problem at greenhorn river bed. dumped cars, shells, garbage. no respect, then they get all mad when cops bust them cause the area is CLOSED!

I know that big pile of garbage is located in somewhat accessible trail section... unfortunately, as I mentioned in the other thread, there was more than a fair share of the "random beer can" laying about 10 feet into the brush. Glenn and I cleaned up and hauled out a small amount of garbage, but I guaruntee that at least a full truckload of stuff could come out of just the 4wd-only section...

BigHG 03-05-2002, 03:28 PM I had a very gratifying experience a few years ago. A buddy an I were out bird hunting just outside of town. We crested a small hill that looked into a dry wash. Low and behold, here is some guy pushing asphalt shingles out of his pickup into the wash. We jumped down into the wash and confronted him, shot guns in hand. The worst part about this was that we were less than one mile from the landfill ... one mile!!! He wasn't to sure what to make of us, until we told him he wasn't leaving until he loaded his stuff back up in the truck. It was great, he was cussing and screaming the whole time it took him to load back up. We even made him take a few tires that were in the wash. :D
I hope that taught him a lesson!
BIGBIRD 03-05-2002, 03:42 PM man i know we all hate to see that s#@t. our bwst trail was closed down cause of stolen wrecks and trash dumping. and a special thanks to all you drunks that, THROW YOUR FLIPPIN BEER CANS ON TO THE TRAIL.!!!! just my 2c worth.

On another note, the folks on this bulletin board are not just the only people who wheel, I think some forget that at times. A lot of bitching goes on between us on this board about what needs to be done to keep trails open. All of us here know what needs to be done. It is now our responsibility to relay a lot of the good ideas that come up here to the non-board using offroad crowd and get them involved.
