When was the last time it started?

Sounds like you have fire.....

Choke on or off to start on normal temp days?

If it has sat awhile you may have old/seperated fuel.

New plug and make sure it has fresh gas....

If you have been kicking with the choke on you may have floode it - pull the plug and kick it through vigorously a few times.

I put fresh fuel

New plug

I have flooded it and pulled and cleaned plug several times

temp does not seem to matter

It backfired so bad that it blew the end out of the spark arrestor

the spark is white in color should it be blue?

Any other ideas ?
Thanks Matt

Hmmm.
I am assuming your fuel mixture is with the same ratio you used last time and it was running good....

If it is a new plug it shouldnt have any build up (unless you have been kicking a LONG time) that you could see....

Again - when was the last time it started? If it has sat withe fuel in the carb for a long time the fuel can 'varnish' your jets. You might need to pull the carb or pull the bowl and jets if you can reach them on that bike. And you can also check for other stuff like water which would indicate you need to pull the tank and clean it also.

Putting the old plug back in or better yet a new plug will not hurt.

Things to try (with fresh dry plug, aircleaner, etc...):
* drain carb bowl, pull plug and clean, cycle kickstart many times to clean out as much fuel as possible from cylinder, replce plug, turn on petcock then off long enough to fill bowl only (a few seconds), try to start as normal.

* same as above but with fuel on and no choke.

next steps : verify good working condition of electrical system. The easy stuff is spark plug cable and the connections on both ends. More difficult will be pulling the stator and checking for debris and corrosion.

That is enough for now - I'll think of some other stuff tho. Good luck!

Make SURE all electrical connections are good and clean!
Also remove the plastic cover on the right side of the motor and clean all that you can get to with electrical contact cleaner and even sand paper on the "rotor"... rust is bad......

I had a 87 CR500 and after every time the bike got wet, I had to remove the cover and clean it out or the bike would be a bitch to start.

I have checked the coil , Stator , secondary coil and all checks out according to the service maunal . Cleaned a small amount of rust off of the rotor . The only thing that you cannot check is the CDI unit according to the book .I have used new plugs. Have tried it with choke on choke off fuel on and fuel off still nothing but some big explosions coming out of the tail pipe it scars the shit out of my horses they run around for about 5 minutes each time it goes off . Talked to the Dealer and they seem to think that it might be the CDI unit . Anymore ideas ???? Thanks Matt

What is the RPM sensitive exhaust valve sytem called? Do you have one of those? Don' remember on that bike.... Could be gummed up and stuck open or closed.

Have you tried towing/bump starting? Wear your helmet if you try - that thing may take off with all the unburned fuel if it fires!

Tried pulling but the thing has to much compresion and the tire just skids along . Never heard of the other item you mentioned and I do not see any thing like that in the manual . Thanks

he's talkign about a power valve and no i dont think you have one. I i were you i'd make sure all the carb exit lines are free and that your carb is clean, let it sit in solvent for a few days, that jets are clear. also make sure you reeds arent chipped. i do not believe anything electrical i wrong with your bike

Power Valve! Yeah. But your manual would have said so if you had one....

Try starting out in 3rd or 4th to bumpstart it.
