i took the 4.3L apart that i bought and was puzzled by what i found. i dont know whether A) its dried up oil because it has been sitting for a long time, or B) it was over heated. any other possibilities? anyone know why its like that?

That's sludge, it comes form NEVER changing the oil. the engine needs a complete overhaul, that suff will plug passageways etc.

Never changing oil, overheating, overall lack of maintenance.

That's exactly what that is, carbonized oil.

Oil was never changed, run for a long, long time, poor conditions, probably overheated a lot, you name it.

Nothing can save it now, it's well past time for a full teardown and rebuild.

You'll find that more coke and carbon are built up on the backsides of the valves, I'd bet the oil-pump pickup screen is nearly clogged with the stuff, and you'll probably find excessive wear on all the bearings, cam loves and lifters and valve guides.

Doc.

ok got the heads off and was prepared for what i saw because of the condition of the pics above :( there is a little rust in the middle cylinder of one side, hopefully i can just hone that out, im gonna have to take the heads apart and take them to school and clean them up with solvent and probly bead blast them really good and be sure to get all the glass out of everywhere and clean the block up some how.

Oooohh that's ugly.
This is one of those times when you want to pay the machine shop to do the dirty work.
Nothing a good hot tanking (or 3) wouldn't take care of.

actualy it is not that bad you seem to have
gotten lucky the cyleders do not look scored

I would pull every thing apart and not
waist your time trying to clean it
find a shop that will bake it in a high
temp oven then clean it for you.

it does sound like you are trying to save \
money so yes I have seen some one clean a engine like that before,

1st disasemble every thing then preshure wash it
then blow dry it right away.
then get a bunch of tooth brushes
also check harbor freight for long brushes

then go for it

 i just remembered my buddies dad works at a machine shop, ill have to be talking to him tommarow:D :D but i still gotta get it up on the stand and take the rest apart. i DID get lucky, all the cylinders except the one with rust in it seem to be in ok shape. one thing i did notice was OIL IN THE ANTIFREEZE, what little was left in the hose from the waterpump anyway when i was disassembling everything.that mean anything terrible:confused:

Looks like #4 had a leaking head gasket, or worse. You have water in the cylinder, and oil in the water.

A friend that works at a salvage yard tells me that the trick for nasty parts cleanup is oven cleaner. Pick some cheep stuff up at the Dollar store and soak the thing with it, then take it to the car wash....

If it works, let us know. I have not had need to try it yet.... ;)

the oven cleaner thing workes well. but dont get cought letting it go in the street it is bad news for the sewer. spray it on and let it sit for like 10-15 min and use a wire brush to get off the harder stuff.

Definitely rebuild time, too much abuse to be trusted. Too bad you couldn't start hith a better condition engine. Ditto on the Hot tank, the crud is internal.
Good luck you'll need it!
