Most likely BR Tech Racing in Wyoming.
They are really nice but not polycarbonate.

Still, a nice product and a good price.

Tfab

Polycarbonate and lexan are stronger than the plastic that these hoods are made of. The material used to make these hoods is like that used to make coke bottles. I have not yet tested mine but I know that coke bottles are very durable.

Tfab

Just to clarify I have CJ, YJ, and TJ jeep hoods ready to ship. The Cruiser Hoods are still in the works. I will post up pics as soon as they are done.

woody
06-30-2005, 07:08 PM
did some researching online today....per a website I was on, plastic is not as strong as polycarb, but is more scratch resistant and has more clarity. Poly carb doesn't resist scratches as well, is not as clear as plastic, but gains in the strength....

neither is as clear as glass...thot this was odd...hopefully Trent can confirm my web findings (we all know how accurate the interweb is!)

Thanks for the callback Trent, I'd be more than happy to post the first pic of those hoods once it's installed on my rig :D

How do they stand up to heat? Hot V8 under the hood :)

Gunmetalcruz
07-01-2005, 09:58 PM
The hoods are made by a sled based company that makes replacement plastis for sledcross and hill climbing mod sleds. I would be willing to be my skidoo's 800 is hotter under the hood then a V8. If you had a really close spot you could put advesive heat tape to be safe. I really wouldn't think you would need it with properly installed hood pin and zeus etc. Tom

How will these hoods hold up to highway speeds? Will they flap in the wind/how flexible are they?

Gunmetalcruz
07-03-2005, 09:54 PM
We don't have one yet on one of are rigs but we will follow up with trail test pics soon. If you run your hinges and two hood pins I would be willing to wager it will stay down fine. My sled's geared down and tops out at 80-90... how fast does you crawler go on the street?

For those interested other hoods we have seen are about .095inch's and the plastic hoods we are selling are .1505 thick, so a bit thicker which should help with flapping. After tommorow we will have one on the tj and will clip a pic at 60mph which is top speed on the streets around the shop.

My tj buggy has the fenders raised into the hood so I have to trim the hoop so it can fit on on the rig. I taped lines as guides and then cut with an air saw.

Next it's time to find some good paint. The first thing I tried was Dupli-color van and suv paint. I like the colors. However it chips when bent to the extremes.

Tfab
07-08-2005, 12:34 PM
Use can see the chip better in this shot. Im glad I cut down my hood it gave me some scrap to test the paint.

Tfab

Next I tried SEM coror coat Flexible Coating. I bent it the same amount with no cracks.

woody
07-08-2005, 01:23 PM
so, I guess I shouldn't have used Duplicolor on the rest of the paint on my rig...lol

Never heard of SEM, where do ya buy, and do they carry the same colors as Duplicolor?

Woody I am in the same boat as you. I used duplicolor on the rest of my rig also. I like their colors. The SEM colors are not as cool. No metalic in their paint. My local paint shop said they with match the duplicolor paint, add a flexing agent and put it in rattle cans for me. I could also use a cup gun but thats alot of clean up.

Trent, that hood looks kickass...be careful where you run it though. I saw one come apart in a rollover that shattered into big/sharp pieces and that could take someone out quick. If you're rockracing, I'd recommend you put the old hood on and run the plastic for the times you want bling...really, that thing is cool.

That sounds scary. I am looking into having them made out of the same plastic that dirt bike fender are made of. I want to do a few different colors. Good luck at the XRRA in Co. I can't make it, this time of year gets really crazy around the shop and thats alot of driving for a one day event.

Trent, status on the FJ40 stuff??

rugburn
07-26-2005, 08:17 AM
Dustin et al............

I think the incident you are referring to was one with which the hood was fabricated from an opaque material other than polycarbonate.
Perhaps it was acrylic; generic term for the trade name "plexiglass" or perhaps it was PET with the trade name of Vivak.

Both of these transparent "plastics" will shatter upon impact as you described in that case.

Polycarbonate, with the most common trade name from GE being Lexan, will not shatter upon impact.
It absorbs a tremendous amount of energy and dissipates it internally in the form of a rainbow of colors.
Only after repeated cycles of impact or deformation (250-300 major blows) will polycarbonate give way.

The means with which a material is formed has a lot to do with internal stresses, lower levels of physical properties(not being as strong as the resin provider claims it is), as well as a lesser lifetime of purposeful usage.

While no material is perfect, polycarbonate is used for police riot shields, hockey rink protection, mass transit windows, and architectural glazing where impact resistance is required.

As this sport and its sanctioning bodies grow, I firmly believe that this trend of replacement panels made from polycarbonate and other plastic alloys will grow accordingly.

I am wondering how difficult it would be to narrow one of these hoods, my buggy uses a YJ hood that is narrowed 5", I would love one of these hoods but am not sure I can use one. Anyone have thoughts on narrowing them??

rugburn
08-01-2005, 06:03 PM
Best bet for narrowing one of these hoods, would be to go ahead and cut it down the middle as needed, then allow for a means with which to attach at the cowl end as well as the grille end and allow the middle section to remain unattached.

Hood pins or dzus fasteners at each mounting point will contain the hood at these points.
The hood would be a two piece unit, allowing for easy access to a single side as required.

Hope this helps...... :p

The hood is on my rig and the rig is loaded up on the trailer for a weekend of abuse. I filled my front tires up with water and I am bringing my helmet. The chances I will put the hood into some rocks are very high. Steel hoods never last me a hole trip without dents so we will see how the plastic holds up.

I am pulling this batch of hoods off the market. The plastic used is not holding up. I distroyed the hood that was on my rig in one day. I ordered a new batch made out of lexan and I think they will hold up better. It will be a few weeks before they are ready. The bad news is that the lexan hoods will cost a little more.

Just made the call today to get one on order. Shipment expected before the end of the month for the Cruiser version. This batch is smoked polycarbonate and Woody (who dat) gets the first one!

As far as paint, when I painted my trucks mirrors to match the body, I used a plastic primer. It was clear and the 2 stage paint stuck to it very nicely. Looking forward to running this awesome and long awaited product.

I took a piece of the left over fender from a clear lexan hood a put it in the freezer for 24 hrs. The next day put it through a pounding. Stomping, bending you get the idea. It was hard to damage, the only thing I could do to hurt it was bend it in half and then stand on the fold. This produced a white line but other wise went back to its original shape.

The smoke hood above is a TJ hood and there are pics of the TJ hood on the first few pages of this thread. As for raised fenders molded into the hood I don't think it will happen. I could build you steel tube fenders that are raised like on my buggy. Pics on the first page of this thread.

Sounds like a good idea. Thats what I did on my buggy and I am suprized that more people have not done it. It gives more tire clearence and I think it looks better. The smoke hood came out really cool I can't wait to put it on my buggy with some smoke side panels.

This is the brand I use. SEM color coat my local auto parts store will mix custom colors and I spray it with a cup gun. They can also put it in rattle cans. Jason Berger uses Krylon Fusion. Both work good but I could not find a blue I liked in the Krylon so I had a custom SEM mixed up in Navy Blue metalic.

Dustin
03-21-2006, 08:28 PM
I went to my local Ace hardware. They had the krylon made for plastics in 30-40 different colors. I used some fine steel wool and then a good degreaser. (note: don't use brake cleaner to degrease...) The paint stuck very well and I couldn't get it to chip after about 4 hours. I'll test it again in a couple days and see if its any different.

A few tips for the guys painting the clear hoods. Paint the inside of the hood, it will stop the paint from scratching. DO NOT USE BRAKE CLEANER to clean your hoods, it will make the hood more brittle, mild soap and water is the best. We have had the best luck using Pactra brand paint(it's for model airplanes). Know that when you paint it, you are diminishing its flexability by at least 10%. I have been around these hoods in the snowmobile industry for the last 5-6 years, interesting to see other applications. Will they be making front fenders for 'Yotas?

I think Tfab is referring to engine temps.

crawlin'YJ
05-29-2006, 03:14 PM
Don't know for sure on the engine temps, but most of the warping is happening while it sits parked. I only run it every couple weekends or so, all other times it stays parked. Like 2 weekends ago, I went to Harlan, KY and it wasn't that badly warped. Looked at it this weekend, and its more warped then it was the last time I ran it. I guess I'll just try to make some sort of brace that'll make it keep its original shape.

I am thinking about doing a 3rd gen toyota mini truck hood narrowed with fenders attached for use on buggys. If your hood is thrashed your fenders must look great.:smokin:

My friend has a stock YJ with a trashed hood. He wheels mild trails and it is his daily driver.

Would a thrasher hood look good with the factory paint and would it work well with factory mounting?

Thrasher hood dose not hold paint well. Like the name says it's for thrashin'. Your friend should get a clear hood and paint it from the inside. Hinges work fine but you need to put some sheet metal on the inside. Hood latch will not work so most people use hood pins. I use 1/4 turn fasteners on all hoods we install at the shop.

I saw these in person on mlk weekend and was seriously impressed! I have polycarbonate body penels on my truck. I tried to form them but without the proper tooling, they looked terrible. These hoods are awesome:smokin:

Full sized or narrowed? I am thinking about doing a narrowed 1 piece bronco front clip with fenders.
