: Weekend Update 3/2-3/2002
tsm1mt 03-04-2002, 12:13 PM Since everyone else is PADDING today.. why not at least PAD with something constructive?
Whatdya get done this weekend? And no, "Web Wheelin'" doesn't count as a good use of your Binder-time. :flipoff2:
I cleaned up my mess from the fender trim...
I didn't take a picture of the huge pile of dirt and crap that fell out of the fenders.. but here's most of the metal I removed..
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/jpg/3_3_2002/pic123.JPG
I didn't make it out to "ramp" on a snow-bank ..
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/jpg/3_3_2002/pic122.JPG
I'm waiting for my new RS Thermostat from Autozone to arrive.. mine's sticking.
Drove to work on Friday.. that was kinda fun with negative caster, 36" Bias TSLs, and the front hubs turned in w/ the Lockright.. SLUGGISH steering, squirreling.. the unsiped rear tires want to spin me around in circles all the time.. yee-haw.
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/jpg/3_3_2002/pic117.JPG
I need to put it back in the shop for a little more trimming - I guess I can't keep the lower mounting bolt..
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/jpg/3_3_2002/pic119.JPG
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/jpg/3_3_2002/pic120.JPG
Started to put the new 6-deg shims in Little Devil..
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/jpg/3_3_2002/pic121.JPG
but.. go figure.. the old center pins are BENT. I don't know if I want to try to drill out the springs in the truck for 3/8" pins or not yet..
Started making Joel B's spring perches..
http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/jpg/3_3_2002/pic124.JPG
Otherwise, I hung more sheetrock in the shop.. got about 1/2 of the walls DONE, aside from mudding (which is still up for debate whether that'll happen or not.. it IS, after all, a garage)
Got the Cat5 snaked through the basement wall and through the floor n' such and spliced into the phones.. need to wire up the shop-end now and I'll actually have a phone in the garage..
Then punch down the other Cat5 run and I can move the shop-PC outside.. I can PBB AND weld at the same time then. :D
Shadow man 03-04-2002, 12:21 PM Installed a Detriot in a Jeep and built a rear Bumper for a EB:)
Hooper 03-04-2002, 12:32 PM Yanked the spacer from my passenger side perch (SOA if you forgot) Then realized that the head of the center pin is not long enough to go into the perch through the shim. So, I am gong to find/make/buy a spacer so the head of the pin goes into into the perch. I will also get the shim welded to the perch, just for added security.
I figure I will buy some washers of *close* to the correct size, or the correct size if I can find them. If they are close, I will just grind them to fit. I like the washer Idea. That way I can adjust how deep into the perch it goes and maximize the whole thing.
Spent the rest of the weekend trying to recover from my stupid cold. This is a two weeker, but better today.
jdjanda 03-04-2002, 12:37 PM Actually I took Friday off to do the front SOA. Friday I had to chase down a reamer for the new links, finished the new front spring mounts with 1" of lift, some nice welds some not so nice. I'll need to clean them up later.
Sat went to JoshC's place, finished his front SOA. Pulling out of the drive way he snapped a Ball Joint on the tie-rod, better then doing it at 65. Replaced the tie-rod, performed a drive way alignment and adjust the dropped drag link. Lowered the front brake line brackets, built new upper and lower shockmounts. Took it out for a spin no problems, found a dirt pile to test the flex. All is good, very even flex front and rear and no rubbing on the 38's. Josh needs to finish the rear shock mounts and reweld the spring perches.
Sun was my SOA. Pulled the old axle, swapped the locker into the new axle. Cut the old brackets off, mounted the new ones. Can I tell you what a beetch it is to weld overhead. Welds are decent, but nothing to write home about. They'll hold until I can reweld and make the welds look pretty. Installed the new wider axle, discovered I need 3/8" spacers for the arms.
Tonight I'll put the front end back together and take for a test ride. I still need to make new front shock mounts, and install the new longer brake lines.
Pics to come later.

So you made the spring mounts on the frame 1" lower.. (vs. 1" higher axle perches)
How high are your spring *perches* on the housing? I presume the "3/8 spacer" is to raise the steering arm so the tie-rod clears the springs, right?
Just wondering how the axle side spring perches were done, and could you have made it lower profile to avoid the block spacer issues?
Forgot.. I dug my knuckles and axle shafts n' such out of the snow pile on the back of the racer and dragged 'em inside the shop so I can get back to installing the new balljoints and U-joints.
I need more solvent to finish filling my parts washer too.. then I might make them all clean and PAINT 'em..
My goodness, what's happening to me?? It's all RustoleumWhite's fault..
Scoutillac 03-04-2002, 12:48 PM What did I get done? Well thanks to the experts at S & N Fab my truck got a whole lot better:D It is now sportin a new set of custom bumpers and winch mount. The seats are now tied into the cage and ready for 5pt harness's and there are a few new spreader bars in the top. Pics of it will be up in a few weeks:rasta:
scoutver5.7 03-04-2002, 01:39 PM I had a short weekend as Friday was my only day off.
I put a whole lotta miles on my new Ford pickup driving around in a snowstorm hittin' all the salvage yards I could find - no PNPs around here.
I had absolutely no luck trying to find a IH spreadbore intake, a front dana 60, or a Ford 9". There were none of the above at 6 BIG salvage yards.
I did find a Scout 80 (I think) that looked better than most I've seen on the road in the last 10 years or so.
Woke up this morning to -2 degrees!!!!
Brrrrrrrrrrrr

Yup, I had to build new spring mounts as I needed to move the springs out 1/2" on each side, so I built in 1 inch of lift. With stock front springs, and the ~1" lift my front should be an inch lower then the rear with 2" AAL and extended shackles. With my full trail load I should sit just about level. I'm now at 32.5 between the sprng pins. The new axle is setup for SOA from the factory, so I could not lower the mounts with out a lot of grinding.

Scout Dude 03-04-2002, 02:29 PM Friday: Attempted to mount 2 of my 36's onto my new MRT's...and discovered that the ring holes don't all line up...Called and talked to the guy I bought them from and let him know...we are trying to work this out but I might end up going with another brand:mad:
After that, I got pissed, and left. Went to my buddies house to start planning his cage.
Sat: Just about every fourwheeling buddy I have showed up for the first anual Tube-Bending BBQ. When tore my buddies YJ cage out and started building the new cage. Lots of slacking off and a little contributed to us not getting it finished..but the steak sure was delicious:D
Sun: after much deliberation, I decided to ditch my original idea of running the cage within the 1/2 top and another one outside. I also ruled against the removable spreaders Idea. I started going full-tilt on my own cage. This week I won't be able to finish it due to CALROCS but it should be finished by the following weekend:)
So, to sum it up: I need my front axle back inorder to figure out where my t-case x-member and rear perches will go
I need some fawken 8-lug wheels that actually work.

Did you sell your Skyjacker springs? Weren't you running 4" SJs?
I've been thinking of taking the rear 4" springs and using them SOA.. since they only netted me 2" of lift to begin with, they'd give you your ~ 2" of lift + SOA you're after.. and they're very flexy.
And "new" springs, vs. used stockers with an AAL..

No, yes was being the key word :D

Josh C used the main leaf from a 4" Super Lift with the remaining stock pack. I'd say he has about 2" of arch in the springs. Fairly soft, flexes well enough to invert the rears. Mucho travel, lots of drop. The one problem is the additional length of main has the shackles pushed out fairly far. The setup should work very nice.

My rears are a new set of springs with the AAL, uh and I used a front Trail Master AAL, don't know if that will make a difference but the pack is a little stiffer unloaded. I figure with the trail load it should be nice and soft. The SJ's are too soft with a full trail load, I did read the post on the different spring rates for the SJ's. If I had the money I would use the 2" version with the SOA. The SJ's are nice springs, thin, flexy, and with anti-friction pads on the spring ends. I just don't know how well they'll hold up. I noticed by the end of a day of wheeling the SJ's where much softer.

Kinda how the wrenching weekends go, whole lot of BS, some work, the  is the killer, you've got to control the intake if you want to get any work done.

Any way to make a removable section of the half cab that will allow the cab to drop down into place over the spreader bars then reinstall the removable piece?

Actually, that could work really well for some decent spring movment.
Know he can go with a bit longer shackle and take advantage of that longer spring... Better shackle angle with out introducing tons of lift...

Yeah, except the ring is what keeps the tire centered. And, I shouldn't have to dril brand new wheels. The new owners of MRT say that they found a bunch of rings that were punched wrong...gonna have to wait for new ones to be made.

I have thought about that...except that these half-tops are kinda rare. I think that I might try making something like that with a cut-down full top. I'll save my half top for a rainy day (And possible another Scout--Once you own one, you can't stop there!)
RustoleumWhite 03-04-2002, 04:03 PM well lets see... what did I get done.....
Saturday pick up my new toy... I'll get pics tonight. Played with it a bit. Got it running again, and started screwing with the clutch master. Gave it a bath as well.
Also went to town more on scraping one of my Scouts... Sertain parts I want to save, and got to cut it into 4-pieces for local recycler. Even rusted out, POS Scouts are tough.... Then had to clean up for dinner with some other couples....
Sunday was Jenni and I's aniversery..... so I made her breakfast, did my taxes, payed some bills, tore more of the truck apart, cleaned up the yard some more, then drug her outside to build a retaining wall :D. God I love her
Then we went out to dinner and..........
Today I'm going to see about this MC and see how this little guy drives.....
Cliffy [JD] 03-04-2002, 05:38 PM NOT A DAMN THING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was only like 4-10deg here this weekend. So me and the wife & baby went to visit the granparents in CO. And did some B-day shopping for the wife.
This week or this weekend I plan to fix that fuel pump leak and get her running again. AND hopefully get my tail-light set-up in.
scoutver5.7 03-04-2002, 05:45 PM OldScout,
Check your PM and/or email.
Hey, this is cool. Found a new intake and get to pad at the same time!!!!!

hey Tom, was this due to pounding those springs into the perches instead of drilling out the holes? I hope not, cause I used your technique!!
thanks
440scout 03-04-2002, 11:08 PM i worked on my roundy-round car .. sold some parts off the sammi, and did some big 2wd style mud boggin in the big scout.....

Well, pounding yes, but not like you think..
I think THIS had more to do with it:

Here's some Video of the crash (http://tigger.tmcom.com/~tsm1/scout/jpg/racing/8_25_2001/384/tom_ouch.mpg)
THAT is my guess on why the center pins are bent.. which is also why I'm replacing the grenaded front axle.
Unlike the stunt I pulled the year before, thanks to the Reverse Shackle at least I didn't bend the springs and crack the hangers - AND break the center pins.
More amazing.. my welds on the RS with my 110V 120amp Hobart MIG held up just fine!
