: death of a leaf
Nor Cal Jeep 07-02-2005, 07:19 PM Today on the maiden run of my SOA YJ rear 44 w/ARB, front HP30, stock YJ/ 4" Pro Comp leaf pack, 33's. As you can see I raped my front leafs, I had the wheels locked to the right and my left front tire dropped down into a trench and when I started to accelarate to get out of it I herd my front shackles slame into the frame. Besides the killed front leafs the X-fer case was bleeding real bad, when my leafs got bent it cause the pinion to rotate down. So my first question is what could I have fucked up in my T-case?
Second question I need to get this thing drivable again and cheap, so Im thinking waggy's from pick-n-pull, I have the RE Anti-wrap perches with the 3 pin hole locators, so will those compansate for the length difference between waggy's and YJ springs? Last question, did not having my springs clamped together contribute to the saudimization of my front springs?
currupt4130 07-02-2005, 07:25 PM uhmmm 4 inch springs SOA'd with 33's? wow thats gotta look interesting. might want to re-think that strategy. anyway, possiblities for the tcase, slightly cracked, twisted it and broke the seal between the halfs, cracked the front output, just look for where the leak is coming from and trace it.
also, looks like youve got a hell of a steering angle, might want to find a solution to that, fast, before you hit a bump and change lanes... holy crap. o, and procomp springs are garbage. Waggy springs are going to be longer, but looks like you can pull off anything... :shaking:
Kyron 07-02-2005, 07:27 PM 1 ........ drive shaft bottomed out in the case, hopefully just the seal is pissed (nice pun)
2... sounds good??
3 ......... yep :D it sure didnt help :D

The packs are not 4" Pro comps they are mostly stock YJ's with 1 pro comp leaf in the rear and two in the front pack. I'll admit my steering angle isnt that great, but the picture makes it looks insane. Im just to broke for a new front axle, so the steering is gonna suck for a bit.

A couple days after I installed my SYE I noticed the seal leaking, it wasnt bad, but apparent. After I hit up pick-n-pull in the morning im gonna drop the skid plate and peep everything out.
KansasJoe 07-02-2005, 11:52 PM i see those bends all the time....clip or not it would have bent and by not having a clip probably actually saved it from breaking....as far as the driveshaft angle you can buy a pair of 6 degree wedges for 10 bucks (soa front springs the fat will be towards the front)....the best system i've came up with for preventing those bends is with snail wraps

Im not sure why I would need degree shims. Were you looking at the pinion angle in the picture? I set the pinion angle Horizontel to the T-case output. When the springs bent it pushed the Pinion angle towards the ground, thats why it looks screwed up. Or were you talking about for the Waggy springs?
The Black Sheep 07-03-2005, 10:31 AM Hmm like the previous poster said 4" soa is a bit high, if you were to go with a smaller spring, you would limit the probably of you tweeking springs everytime you hit a rock, 4" springs don't flex worth a damn, so you will also increase your articulation. Ive had a buddy that slammed his front end getting out of a rut and it pushed the drive shaft right into the t-case, that and ive seen them piss like crazy at severe angles.
To answer your questions, the clamps had nothing to do with the springs bending. Scrap those for stock springs or military wrapped ones and you will be able to fit 33's-35s no problem, even 37s if you install TJ flares. I'm not sure about the anti wrap spring perches, and either a severe driveline angle screwed up your t-case, or it happened when you pushed the front axle back it messed it up.
norcal----one way to stop that from happening again....leaf #2 should be mil wrap.....#3 should be close clamps really close to the mil wrap. Good luck ZUK
KWTMECH 07-03-2005, 01:47 PM How about a shackle reverse? I think they belong in the rear anyways
alwaysbrokeYJ 07-03-2005, 09:29 PM I've done that a few times, then I got some anti-kickback shackles from M.O.R.E. and so far so good. The middle bolt hits the frame and stops the shackle from kicking inward, which is what happened to mine. When I get the cash I'd like some military wrapped leaves, but for now the stock ones with an extra leaf or two will work. I'm thinking a shackle reverse would help too, but you need a new longer travel driveshaft for that.
Nor Cal Jeep 07-03-2005, 10:44 PM When I was searching for the waggy springs I seen people talking about those type of shackles they are just boomerang shackles right?
KansasJoe 07-04-2005, 12:50 AM The only problem with a military wrap is it's an extra leaf and will stiffen your ride up and take away a lot of your flex....If I were you I would go with a snail wrap because it has the same effect but doesn't stiffen your ride because it goes on top of the main leaf or if you want to be super secure you could go with a snail and military wrap which is what i make for demolition derby cars, usually for the jeeps i just do the snail wraps
danberlyoung 07-04-2005, 06:36 PM I did exactly the same thing to the front leaf on my CJ-7 just by catching the tire lugs on the leaf while I had the wheel cut far to one side and hitting the gas hard trying to get out of a rut.
Take the leaf pack to a local spring house and have them straighten the leaf. They have huge hydraulic presses that can bend those things like a piece of paper. I have a set that I'm keeping as a spare set that they fixef for me. Cost something like $5-10 I think. Well worth it.
NE-RokToy 07-05-2005, 11:14 AM Tight spring clamps as close to the spring eye as possible woulda of helped... I also agree some type of setup to keep the shackle from inverting would help too
shackle reversal/milatary wrap springs are going to be a more perminent fix though
