First off you should post this in the newbie section but no worries it will get moved.

What do you want to do? If you want to rock crawl a new style jeep get a TJ with a dana 44 in the rear.

If you want to mud by a full size. Jeeps are awesome vehicles, however as you develop towards a specific type of vehicle what you want changes. The more you build a rock crawler the less it will be capable on the sand.

UUGH Please explain this cuz I"m lost. WHat does that mean. There isn't much you can do to make a jeep less capable in the sand. Either I"m missing something here or you are retarded

I think you are missing something. :flipoff2: Crawlers do just that...They CRAWL. You need a lot more wheel speed for most sand runs. My Jeep used to blaze up any sand hill around. Now that it is built more for rockcrawling I have a much harder time in the sand. Most rockcrawlers have a very aggressive tread while an all terrain is usually, but not always, prefered for the sand. You try to "float" on the top and not dig down.

Are you still lost?? :D

I think rockcrawler answered it pretty that in fact you are missing something.

My transfer case is 4:1 and my gears are only 4.56 on 35's and I am considering running my stock truck on the sand over my jeep.

get a 92-95 4.0 with decent miles and a standard tranny-hard top and full doors. You can find them for 2500-3500. You can always sell the hard top for about 300-400 in October and get 500-700 for a full set of doors. Then use the extra money to get some real axles, lift and tires, and a good heater....

I have a 98 and love it but for budget I would go the YJ route- cheaper to buy and cheaper to lift

Yeah I just might be cuz not all "rockcrawlers" are stuck in 4LO. My buddy has a comp jeep that works great on the beach. Hell he even drives on the street with it cuz it is "street legal" per-say. Besides all one needs to do is to air down(just like in rockcrawling) and have it the jeep in standard 4HI aggressive tires or not. My Super Swampers worked great at the beach

Beach......... I have seen cars on the beach :shaking:

When talking sand we mean something like sand hills and large dunes.

An aggressive tire does well in the sand if you have the power to keep wheel speed up and keep moving forward. I used a mud tire for years and did fine. I still do pretty good with my boggers cuz I have the power in 4HI to keep them spinning. Still not as good as when I have it built for sand. ie different gears etc.

My point still stands that most rockcrawlers can't do as well in the sand as a rig built for sand. The opposite is true also that a rig set up for sand can't do as good in the rocks as a rig built for rocks. :D

I should have mention the OBX. Daytona beach is nothing. At Ocracoke Island in NC you have to have ground clearance and 4wd to go on the beach or else your gunna be stuck. The sand there is really soft and you can sink down like 15 inches in some spots depending on your vehicle weight. My dad bottomed out our family suburban 3 years ago and almost lost the suburban to the tide

YJs are cheaper to buy and lift. Go YJ imo.
Also as said get a 92+ with a 4.0L and the ax15 tranny.

I think it would be cool to build an extended wheel base Jeep liberty on dana 60's and 44's.

In the end though it would just be a shell.

I think you should get a big shiney one, with some of those big knobby tires and some big bright lights and chrome bumpers and some big ole' fender flairs.

Read lots of stuff, and keep the one you get, I'm on my 5th one and starting from scratch.....again! You will know what you have after a while, and what you want to do next. BEWARE!! Its a $$$ pit. It NEVER ends. There is ALWAYS something to add or upgrade no matter how far you go with it.

Buy something else, unless you just have to have a Jeep. :shaking:

Come on, wouldn't you rather have a VW Bug, you can cut the fenders off, extend the axles, and put 44's on it and it wouldn't have a single problem.

Only one suggestion for ya, buy a Toyota instead. I have had two Jeeps and 6 Toyotas and am getting the 7th in Ft. Collins this weekend. Jeeps are very good wheelers when they work, which ain't often.
If a Toyota component is expected to last 200K miles, most likely it will. The same component on a Jeep you can expect to fail in 1/10th the time/miles/hours.
Plus a Toyota will hold its value better, better by far.
