: YJ Steering Box Question

I wanna upgrade my steering box cause the current one is almost shot. I wanna get a pick n pull one, but where do I look? It won't really matter as far as strength as much as it does for fit-up. Does my stock 95 box use o-ring style lines or flaire and what size and spline count the input shaft is it? Any suggestions on where to look?

just went thrugh that, the CJ and YJ have the same part # and it even bolts up to the mount exactly the same. The problem is the input shaft, some early CJ’s had that sealed CV type shaft while the YJ have the U joint. They are not compatible unless you raise the radiator 2 “ to make room for the CJ stile bottom shaft. The CJ one is bigger and the YJ U joint stile wont fit. every ting else is identical. atleast in the outside.

Adam,

Well, for years (since I submerged it and blew up the motor) it has been a little tight, but always worked fine. It hasnt returned to center in years, but it just has a sloppy feeling. Lishit in there is floppin around. Now wiht the Ram in, it is waayyyyyyyy too tight. I have to FORCE the wheel to turn when driving, and it sticks wherever I leave the wheel. Just common driving adjustments take effort, and it tracks hardcore...even more than a regular vehicle with 38's  Does that make sense? It is f'ing scary to drive.

The little cherokees have the same input spline diameter / count, but I haven't looked at the mounting (I was only scavanging the steering shaft at the time). Might be the same as a YJ box, might not. As mentioned the CJ and YJ boxes mount the same but the input spline diameter/count is wrong and the older boxes don't use o-rings which you need.

ANy ideas on an upgrade box? Aftermarket? I would prefer a junk yard box though, for $$$ ;)

Oh yeah....Eric....:flipoff2: How the hell are ya :p

Don't bother with any aftermarket stuff, waste of $$ IMO.

Check out the steering pump upgrade info at TheLakeRat's site... West Texas Offroad (tech section).

Maybe I am missing something, but all I can find there is Pump related stuff? Far as I can tell, my volume and pressure are fine...they move the hydro no prob.

Scroll down just a hair and you'll see the rebuilt box for $150. Send him yours and $150, he rebuilds it.

If I wanted to spend $150 on getting a box rebuilt I might consider that, but I was lookin for ideas on junkyard upgrades :flipoff2:

I have heard about a Saginaw from an 80's something or another, but I don't know how much of an "upgrade" it would be.

Have you tried the "search" function?? :flipoff2:

I just want to know what the spline count is and what Dia. it is so that we can get one off a chevy car or s-10 that will hook up to the input shaft. I know it sounds like a stupid question but on his Jeep the box is not easy to get to much less see what spline it is so I am hopeing that someone on here can come through. I totally agree that a high $$$ box is a total waist of $$$ and that with the ram any car box that is 3.25 or 4 turn will be just fine.

Flaming River's site shows 3/4" 30 spline. I have a YJ box in the garage... I'll check it tonight if nobody responds sooner.

What about a GW box?

I know they are the 4 bolt mount (to the frame), but I'm not sure on the spline count. Anyone know for sure?

Charly

My YJ box is indeed 3/4" - 30 spline.

Don't know what the GW boxes are, I've never looked past that nasty rag joint deal that they use. I just took one apart the other week too and didn't notice... I took it apart at the rag joint and didn't bother looking for splines because I was only after the phat mega-slip stock GW steering shaft :D

Keith, I pointed you to West Texas for both the rebuild option and the pump mod info. Do those mods and laugh at AGR's overrated (overpriced) pumps/boxes. If you're happy with the pump and the rebuild option is out, then you're off to the boneyards with Mr. Stanley unless someone knows of an available direct-swap option. Good luck!

Putz, pics this weekend I hope :D I'm tired of sharing garage shots  so hoping to get some sweet curb shots :flipoff2:

Thanks Eric. I just dont have the money for the rebuild right now. I am gonna fawk with what I have and see if I can make it work better, otherwise I will probly just swap in a new YJ box if I cant find an upgrade ;)

i use a waggy box on my CJ-7 with a YJ u-joint (waggys use the same spline as wrangler) the waggy box has a quicker ratio so your CJ will handle better. you can use the waggy lower shaft and the CJ upper half for a cheep upgrade, the box does have a rag joint though. for the ultimate junk yard CJ steering use a waggy or YJ box YJ shaft with a s-10 column...this will handle great for cheap!

Who cares what the spline count is or if it has a rag joint they are interchangeable, the only thing you have to worry about is the type of fitting, flare or o-ring and even then you can change out the fitting at the pump. If the box you pull happens to have the smaller shaft then buy a manual steering bell coupler, $36 at 4wd hardware, no need to change out steering shaft.

Most of the GM boxes will bolt up. If you stick to 80 or newer, you wont have to mess with the lines. I run a late 80s F-body box on mine, with a ram-asssist. Its squirly to drive on the street with the quick/ variable ratio, but is great for slow speed wheelin

Avoid AGR like the plague. They've lost their ability to build a quality product (well, I'm not sure if they ever had it) Go with an OE relplacement. :smokin:
