: Who dumped "woods"
Cliffy [JD] 03-04-2002, 04:01 PM I think it's sweet how High-Angle does the drawing NOT ONCE, BUT TWICE a month :thumbs-up: to Jess.
But I was flipping through the JP rag the other night and noticed a "Tom Woods" ad and remembered how many people used to (and maybe still do) RAVE about tom woods shafts, and even had sig lines stating "My shafts a WOODY"
I was just wondering how many people LIKE MYSELF have ditched the notion of getting a TOM WOODS shaft IN FAVOR of a HighAngle driveshaft (when the time of $$$ arrives of course ;) ) and why.
Cliffy [JD] 03-04-2002, 04:04 PM I switched, because I think that High-Angle appears to do super-BEEFY work and Truely tailors to the hard-core off road enthusiast (sp) He also appears to have tremenous amounts of care for the customer (look at all the praise he gets for customer service)
Also I really appreciate what he does here on this board twice a month and think "FOR THAT, HE WILL GET MY BUSINESS" (when the time and $$$$ comes)
RoCkSkuLLz 03-04-2002, 04:38 PM well I dont have woods or high angles but if I were to choose between them it would be high angle. Im running some SouthBay Drivelines with the long splines, etc.. super strong havent had any problems with them at all :D
StinkBug 03-04-2002, 04:42 PM I haven't been into wheeling for very long so before i came here i had heard about the same amount on both "they make good shit". After reading all the praise on this BB and seeing the support and participation from Jesse here I'm definitely biased in his direction now. And yes he will be gettin my buisiness when i'm ready to get shafted.:D

rodzzilla 03-04-2002, 04:52 PM When the time comes, I am going to go w/High Angle. He had great turn around on a friend's lines. Plus, there have been many posts about how Jess has gone above and beyond to get the product to the customer. Our corp. office is preaching good customer service, It is nice to see an example of this whenever possible. Now if he can get Member #5162 drawn at the next drawing....
  :D
I dumped local shops for High Angle. Great product, even better service.
67FLAT4 03-04-2002, 05:01 PM My South Bay d/l fell out on Sat. only had it about 3 months.
Jess will be getting a call from me soon.
Whitewater 03-04-2002, 05:03 PM If/WHEN I need new drivelines High Angle definatly has my business. This is simply because his customer service appears to be unparalleld.
1TonJeep 03-04-2002, 05:59 PM i have heard great stuff about hi angle as well as tom woods. i bought a woody for my CJ7. i remember when tom was at six states before he went on his own. back then i heard nothing but good things about his work and that continues. i ordered a HD CV rear shaft for my SOA +3" CJ7 with D20 case and D70 rear. that shaft was delivered in 2 days and was perfect! talk about beef!! i have had no trouble with it all even with my driveshaft angle. not dissing jesse but i have heard that they have great support and follow up but that leads me to believe that they make things right when something shits the bed. while this is great customer support, i would rather not have any trouble to begin with! my guess is that most people have not "dumped" tom but are just plain satisfied with the product and dont need continuing service. I do think its great that jesse supports this board and gives away his products, its a great way to get (almost) free advertising. hell, if i got one for free i would give it an honest evaluation on the front of my rig, however, until i have a compeling reason (of which fad or fashion does not count) to switch from tom then he will continue to get my business.
just my $.02 worth
patooyee 03-04-2002, 06:24 PM My shaft right now is a "woody." However, I bought it before Jess was a known name. Tom has AWESOME customer service and I believe that he makes quality shafts. I also believe that Jess has the same/better quality and same/better customer service. (Although I have not bought from him yet, just judging from what I've heard.) The BIG difference to me is that I don't see Mr. Woods around here busting his ass like Jess does to get our business! Jess acts as if he really needs/wants our business, which is why I plan on ordering my next shafts from him.

poppycock 03-04-2002, 06:35 PM i've got tom woods shafts. they are sweet. no problems. won't be needing new shafts for a loooooooooooooooooong time. jesse seemed to have more solutions for my particular problem than tom... at least jesse was willing to do what it took to get a shaft in there. while tom woods on the hand said "maybe you need to go to someone else for this problem" that's the worst thing a guy can say when my cash is in his hands :flipoff2:
Pavement Pounder83 03-04-2002, 07:09 PM i am goin to hi angle cuz it is a local shop not to mention all the good i have heard about them and how they stand behind the work they do.
Drew
I have Tom Woods shaft.... BAD experience, would never buy another one from him....
Jesse will get my money if/when I get another shaft - no doubt about it.
YellowSub1962 03-04-2002, 07:37 PM I'm glad you guys aren't turning this into a bashing thread....
with that said, I'm currently running Woods shafts, and have had zero problems with them. I got great customer service, great advice, decent prices, good quality, and fast delivery. I will still wear his shirts and display his stickers on my shafts (Unless Jess wants to send me some free ones ;))
When I need shafts in the future I will be trying out Jess's shafts. He's more local to me, supports the BB, very importantly - he supports the guys that compete as well as the littls guys, and most importantly he has excellent customer service and product support.
:usa:
offroadr35 03-04-2002, 07:56 PM jeez, if too many people say they're gonna buy from hi-angle he's gonna stop giving the stuff away! JK, seriously though, one of the best things I see about jess's give-aways is that hopefully vendors will see how much extra business he is going to get for his effort and they will follow in his footsteps. He'll definitely get my business as would anyone who takes his approach. Top-notch vender for sure.

bluesman2a 03-04-2002, 08:14 PM Have a set of Woodys. They are OK, but I've had problems out of them that I haven't had out of lesser shafts (hydraulic'd out an endcap cause they didn't put a hole in it, and first set they sent wasn't right). I haven't talked to Jess in person (seems nice enough here on the boards), but he couldn't be as crotchety on the phone as Tom is.
My next set of shafts will probably be High Angle, but that'll be after I get new axles (a while).
I had wood's shafts. Nothing but problems. No big deal really, but dealing with someone long distance sucked (for the sake of arguement I'll consider that the cause of the big delay). So I went with Gloeco, cause they were local... and because no one else that I'd seen at the time made the beefy shafts. In fact I was told repeatedly after I got em that the scrawny shaft it replaced was the biggest available :D Now Im in CA and Gloeco isn't local but Jess is.. and theres been nothing but positive reports.. He'll be makin shafts for me.. and soon. :D
onetoncv 03-04-2002, 09:22 PM i'm glad this is not a bashing report too- its good to see all the talk in all directions guys its what makes this country what it is- I do work for your application as best as i know how and will devote my buisiness practices to all the 4 wheel drive world if you will allow- because i care about making drivelines that work and perform -( and i enjoy the sport) its in my blood- thanks to all here on this board and others who have allowed me to show what i can do- And i hope when i do make mistakes and it does happen, that I take care of those in a manner that is acceptable YOU ARE FIRST not the money! Jesse Jaynes working for you!:usa:
Slagburn 03-04-2002, 09:35 PM Jesse sure looks like a knowledgable guy who backs up his product. It's all in what you hear, not the size of the magazine ad, and I've heard nothing but good about High Angle stuff.
I've had a couple Woody's, the first one vibrated no matter what I did and he took care of it quick, but that was back when he was really the only game in town.
My understanding is it's all the same stuff off the Spicer shelves that puts them together but I could be wrong. Driveline is all customer service. The shaft I cut into pieces tonight, I paid extra for thick tubing, was told it was .250 and lookie here, it's only .085".
Jesse will be getting all my future business.
Eric Ruhl 03-04-2002, 10:43 PM I got a pair of Woody's :D and I remember him laughing about some clown named Mike's shaft collecting dust on the shelf while he shipped mine out in two days :D LOL OK not really, but it's fun to pick on Mike when I can ;) I've had nothing but good experience with Tom and so I'll stick by him. I know Jesse does kickass work, but I'll stick by Tom so long as he sticks by me. He's gone out of his way for me in the past and I still appreciate that.
wngrog 03-05-2002, 04:16 AM Jess Rocks.
I give him all of my business since he showed up on POR.
I even had him build my spares :D
Get it Jess!!
BTW, I am going to give those shafts a true test now with these 42's!!
EasyXJ 03-05-2002, 05:47 AM Tom Woods rocks. He's taken care of me and my problems in a huge way, definately went above and beyond. I'm in need of a new front shaft (too much suspension travel, not enough d-shaft angle) and I think I'm going to try out Jesse's junk just to see what it's like. I like to spread it around.
Easy
Bigguy 03-05-2002, 07:15 AM I bought from Jess because of this board and the trouble that my son has had with Woods stuff. Nothing but trouble for him and no support. The last time he called they told him "Your past warranty, tough luck, buy something new".

When I needed a new front 'shaft for my race Scout (thanks to the RS) I called Tom Woods.
Why? When the Montana 4x4 Assoc. had our first Divide Ride he came up and I had a great trail ride and conversations with Tom while he was in my area of the country.
While there, a buddy cork-screwed his front 'shaft. Tom built him a new driveshaft back at camp for a 6-pack.
Broke out his Premier Power Welder, 4" grinder, some tube.. and fabbed up a new 'shaft right there in camp.
4 years later, the guy is still running the 'shaft.
That said, I might have to give High Angle a try yet (I have plenty of rigs that are still wearin' stock 'shafts) - mostly because of the giveaways and PBB support - and t'case discs. :D
But for now.. Mine's a Woody.
No problems.. even with a negative pinion angle, a spring-over, U-joints at both ends, reverse shackle, and 4-hi RACING at 60mph.. jumps, bumps, slides.. and lots of right foot.
Lance 03-05-2002, 08:20 AM Well I've run a Woody shaft in the past, and I didn't have any problems with it (due to poor craftsmanship), other than it being under sized (1310) for my application. Not really Wood's fault. Now I have a real shaft - a ONE TON CV that is bullet proof! :nuke: Jesse rules!
I am glad some of you had such good experiences with Tom Woods - I just was not so fortunate.
Back when I did my solid axle swap in the spring of 99 I called him up to order a long travel front shaft. He convinced me a 6.5" travel shaft was "more than enough". Well, first trip out it lasted half a day before it pulled apart and messed up the splines.
Did I mention that "long travel" shaft cost me over $250? (standard shaft, non CV)
Well, I ran my spare shaft for over a year and finally sent the shaft back to Tom for a REAL long travel shaft (like I had wanted in the first place). Everything seemed to go well until I got the shaft back... he had left off the Toyota end flanges, and had consequently cut the shaft too LONG.
BTW - that cost me ANOTHER $150...
Well, he finally sent me the end flanges, and offered to have me send it back yet again to have it shortened... After all of this, I said no thanks and had a local shop shorten it for $40 and get it right the first time....
So now I have this nice 12" travel driveshaft I have never used, and have spent almost $500 on....
Every time I called Tom it was like it was a chore for him to talk to me or deal with me....
Never again.
Brandon 03-05-2002, 08:36 AM I must say when I got my first woody (he he) it was not tom woods it was six states but anyway, that guy was amazing, send two new tcase flanges in case one did not work, and the shaft was top notch, nothin long travel but all spicer stuff. Still got it on my jeep and plan to keep it till I have problems.
On the other hand Jess at Hi-Angle is simply amazing, maybe their are a lot of shops that go the extra mile but the few I know that do are him, marlin (I know a lot of people get screwed as a result of him helping others instead sometimes though), "LakeRat" at West Texas Off Road, and Grady at Extreme Off Road - good experiences with em all. I run hi-angle shafts (custom ends and long travel) front and rear on Mo (my hybrid toyota) where the real wheeling is done..
Since I do all I can myself it is sure nice to go somewhere and get treated well.
Keep it up Jess and all the others that provide friendly fast and professional work..
welndmn 03-05-2002, 10:18 AM I run it cause Jess gave me a T-shirt :D:D:D
Newfie Bullie 03-05-2002, 10:40 AM I've got a stock-style 1350 shaft that I got from Tom back when he was back at Six states. Freakin AWESOME shaft! :D Nice & beefy! I found Tom friendly & helpful so I figured that for my rebuild with new D60 & 14ff; I'd call him up again. Well; first off; I can't get him. I keep getting this "Troy" guy who either won't pass on a message or Tom won't return calls! So after reading about Project Potent Rodent on Off-Road.com; I decided to give Jess a try. Great guy! Chatted on the phone for a good while & has returned a number of emails. I've got a SYE kit from him & am trying to finish my Blazer rebuild to be able to order my 1350 CV shafts from him.
The final "turn-off" for me was to look at Tom Woods site & see a big write-up on 1350CV shafts telling how they aren't "all that"! In fact; he almost seems to put them down for cost & strength. But in the end; here's the price if you want one!!!!! :flipoff2: HUH?? If they're no good; why's he selling them??
I'm going with Jess now; not even going to try anywhere else; locally included!:D :D
onetoncv 03-05-2002, 08:19 PM well when i first started the 1350 c/v - i got alot of people in the buisiness telling me it was not going to amount to anything - no one would buy this - well thru my hard work it has become more than anyone ever thought - we had 4 of the top 10 arca finishers last year running our 1350 c/v 's and not breaking all year now that says something - and alot of driveline company's are trying to catch up and figure out what i'm doing - and that say's something too- I think they all mis-judged me and my ability - Jesse
Jesse??...Whos Jesse??.....:D
OK Ok hes the next stop in line after my mods also...
coyote 03-05-2002, 08:46 PM Had the same problem with my Tom Wood shaft...can't get in touch with him but Jess is right here and my business is his.....its on the way and you've got mail and in turn the gov't returned my money so now I can spend it again.....
Travis Waldher 03-05-2002, 10:17 PM Well.. I only got this much to say..
HighAngleDrivelines, I think I was customer #3 or something like that when he first opened his doors. looong before POR and the world ever really knew about Jess. In the last (what is it) year and a half, his customer service is UNCHANGED. VERY consistent. I looked at Tom Woods, but his lack of customer service was to say the least disapointing. Tom, just didn't seem interested in my business, never returned a call, never got a good message back in email. If there was a polar opposite of that, it would be Jess.
I only had one problem with my 1350CV after I bought it... and it was my fault, not design or workmanship. either it was me, a buddy, or precision drivelines up here that screwed up the CV. Jess was kind enough to get that fixed for me, on his own dime, all I paid was shipping since I wanted next day air, and that bill would have been really unfair to jess.
Currently, I am running a 1350CV rear, the long travel front. My spares are going to come from Jess when the time comes. And any replacements on other vehicles or driveline work I have done I'll ship down there. I've had too many and heard of too many bad experiences in my area with EVERY driveline shop in Seattle and tom Woods. Jess is the only driveline shop I have yet to hear a complaint from.
ok.. My only complaint... its not really jess's fault, its lances... lance, why couldn't you draw me earlier this year to win?
:flipoff2:
Supergper 03-06-2002, 12:57 AM I have been runnning a Woody only because he was local and I had never heard about Jess(it was about 2-3 yrs ago when I got my shaft) I have had no probelms at all with mine but customer feedback goes a long way in my book...I have never ever heard anyone say anything bad about Jess' workmanship, customer care, or quality...or anything about him for that matter...Tom on the other hand I have heard negative about him in all those categories and even though I never had a prob with him, who knows I maybe next to get a turd from him??? Jess is getting ALL my business including when I open my own shop...:D
Shaker 03-06-2002, 07:41 AM HIGH ANGLE ALL THE WAY BABY!!!!!! KILLER SERVICE/D-LINES/QUALITY ROCKS......MY ONLY D-LINE SUPPLIER......
JESSE YOU ROCK .....:usa:  ;) :D
TPIJeep 03-06-2002, 08:19 AM When I got in the market of a driveshaft I called everybody I could find in Mags and on the net, the first one I called was Tom Woods, told him I would be running a 400+hp SBC, 1-ton axles 38"+ tires and 6"springs with SOA. I told him my past experiences with 1310 joints with less lift, smaller tires, and less HP, I could bend the cross shaft without really trying.
He told me with the angle I was running the best thing I could do was go with a 1310 series CV joint, I asked him are you sure that will hold up. He turned on a attitude and told me "I don't sell problems I sell solutions, try it and if it fails I will give you your money back" I asked him if there were any other options and he went into preaching about driveline dynamics and how the 1310 was superior to other designs, I hung up and didn't think twice about ordering from him.
I talked to GloCo and the said I needed to run their BAD BOY 80 degree CV which sounded good to me but at 1000 bucks I had to pass it up, then I find out later that the CV will shake the rig apart above 1500 RPM !!!!
Then I found High Angle, Jess was VERY enthusiastic about building my shafts, said whatever was needed could be done, he never considered using the 1310 CV and went right for the big guns 1350's BABY! I now run 1-ton CV's front and rear with a 1350 joint on the rear pinion and a long slip (15"+) 1410 on the front pinion along with the t-case mounted e-brake. My customer support experience has been top notch and we are currently swapping out the D300 for an Atlas and Jess is supplying the parts needed for the swap. There is a reason I run his sticker on my Jeep, "I STAND BEHIND A VENDOR THAT STANDS BEHIND ME"
Thanks, Jess
onetoncv 03-06-2002, 08:49 AM Thanks mark- Jess
jessie makes things other people dont, because he wheels and understands our needs. i needed a 1350 cv for my d300. my d300 has the aa hd output and jessie is the only one that went out of his way to design a 1350 flange for this output. i also needed a specialy designed front d shaft cause clearance issues between the clocked d300 and the th350. jessie again went out of his way to help me out and used a long spline d shaft, we put the splined end to the t case and the slip part on the axle and made it so that it doesnt slip all the way up and leaves just the splined section near the tranny for just enuff clearance. i have broke alot of d shafts in the past, and although i havnt wheeled these yet, i can tell from the size and quality they arent gonna brake or twist. jessie is my d shaft builder for as long as i need d shafts.
85TrailToy 03-06-2002, 11:18 AM Got a High-Angle up front. and if I need one for the rear, (or ever get a crawler), I'll need 1 or 2 more! ...and last week I found my long lost 'Rock Crawler Equipped' sticker!:D Looks great on the back window.
redruM 03-06-2002, 02:04 PM Jess... You will get my order in a month or two (as soon as i get the axles where i want them...
untill then
Good Luck
