: Fix Oil Pan Leak?

I just picked up a '94 FJ80 for our family car. When I got it I noticed a decent amount of oil on the undercarage. After running some die through, it turned out to be the upper oil pan seal. (I've never seen a car with 2 oil pans until now?) Anyhow, dealer wants too much money to replace it.

How hard of a job is this? I replaced the oil pan on my 90 runner when I did my SAS and it was a simple bolt-off, bolt-on project. Is there something extrememly hard about removing the two oil pans and replacing the seal?

I did do a search but found nothing on this.

Thanks.

I know there are alot of 80 series owners on this board so I'm surprised nobody has spoke up, I've never changed one of those before, but I'm not afraid! I doubt it could be that hard. Go for it.

That's what I was thinking. I figured a 80's owner would be able to tell me if there is anything funny I need to do or something that MUST be removed to get to it? I'll just get under there and see what happens. The dealer sells a gasket kit for something like $75. I was surprised since the 4Runner uses RTV from the factory?

For added insurance use this and you will not be sorry. Much much better that RTV in my opinion. Urathane is better than silicone any day. I can't say enough good about this product. I use the caulk gun cartridge dispensor instead of the cheeze whizz type for better results. Cost is about $9.

First and foremost, try to just tighten all the bolts around the oil pan. Over time, the gasket shrinks and it begins to leak.

Give that a whirl first and if it does not help, replace the beast.

Put a post on the TLCA mailing list, those guys are always talking about all those other types of LandCruisers. They are a very helpful bunch.

Mike,

There is an 80-Series specific mailing list out there, but I can't find it at the moment. Another good resource is Slee Off Road (http://www.sleeoffroad.com/) . Christo knows his 80-Series stuff.

I've never R&R'ed the full pan set on an 80, but I just looked up the flat rate time: 5.0 hours  Can't be that complicated, especially since there isn't a lot below the engine to interfere w/ its removal (like w/ a 100-Series).

Thanks Jim. I 'll look around some more. I agree it can't be too hard to do. Time consuming is fine, as long as I don't need specialty tools etc...

Funny thing... my previous responce/post stated that I planned to tighten the bolts down first and see how that helped. Now the same reply has " ?? ". Not sure how that got changed? Anyhow, I'll get under the truck Sat. and see what's what.
