: The Buildup Begins
phineas 03-04-2002, 05:00 PM I just got my license and inherited my dad's stock 72 jeep. I dont know where to start. Its got the 232 i6 and a d30 and 44. What should I do? I dont have much money, and I want to keep the engine. Im thinking 35's -- springover and a d44 up front and 60 in rear. How much do you think this will cost me if i do the work? This is just my plan, but any of your opinions would be great
NE-RokToy 03-04-2002, 05:10 PM cheapest would be 44's front and rear out of a 78 earlier wagoneer. You don't need a dana 60 rear for 35's. Also you might want to think about a different tranny with a good low first gear(not sure what tranny you have)
Personally your best bet for now, buy some 31" mud tires and get out and get some experiance. After that put a rear locker in it and get a transmission with lower first gear for better crawling. I wouldnt jump into big modifications, they will only slow your learning curve as a driver.
CJ-Jeeper 03-04-2002, 06:09 PM Good advice from RockToy. I started out with add-a-leafs & 32" tires. Many mods came through the years working up to SAO & 35's after about 10 years. Stay with a mild lift & 33's or smaller for now. Take care of the basics like power steering & a good tranny first.
learn & enjoy:)
StoopidMonkey 03-04-2002, 06:27 PM Id say spring it over on those stock axles. Spring overs are so cheap anyway, and you can clear 33"s. Then build up everyhting else from there. Thats just how i would do it personally.
apeters89 03-04-2002, 08:03 PM I agree with RokToy... buy you some 31's and learn to drive it. Once you get the experience up you can show up all of those rich kids in daddy's TJ on 35's with lockers... After learning how to drive I am able to out wheel people with lockers and bigger tires, all because they've never had to learn... It's fun being the poor guy in the small Jeep showing up all the rich kids...

this is very true, I had my toy on used 31" AT's and did stuff my freinds in ther lifted jeeps with mud tires couldnt do. Sometimes only in 2x4 (double check your driveshaft bolts!)
66CJdean 03-04-2002, 09:35 PM I agree with most of the other guy's have said and run a good set of 31's or 33's and go GET IT!. I wheeld for years on 31's with a 4" lift and open front/rear. The first mod would be power steering, then the 4spd, then a locker, but the axles are way down the line. A 30/44 combo isn't that bad so go lear to walk befor you run.
Po' riggity 03-05-2002, 12:15 AM I agree with what most have said.. slap some tires on it, and go wheel the piss out of it. I wheeled my yj bone stock with 30" AT's for a year before I did anything to it.. Then I did a small lift and 31's, then a bigger lift and 32's. Then gears and and lockers, then a small body lift, and cut the fenders, and now Ive got 35's, and an automatic tranny.. instead of the manual that it came with. Next step is axles and SOA, and Im working on that as we speak, but I learned how to wheel my stock rig first.. And I enjoyed it!

since money is tight and you are new to this id say leave the d30 up front till yah break it. then when yah do upgrade to better shafts with 297 u jionts, a d44 is no better it has 297 jionts and the jionts break first. dont waste money on swapping in a whole axle till yah go d60.
Alaskan Assassin 03-05-2002, 12:49 AM I of course did not know better and swapped a Dana 44 front into my Jeep. And sure enuff right when the boggers went on I could not keep a 297 u-joint in it! LOL... And I did all that work to put it under it and now it is gone:D and I am doing even more work to put the new axles under the Jeep.... I say run the Dana 30 for as long as you can. My friend has a CJ-5 that has a 4.0L in it with 35" boggers and a Dana 30. I sware I have never seen him break LOL!! It is all in the driving... If you put the hammer down it is going to :nuke: :D I say run it though...
Chrisjeep7 03-05-2002, 06:30 AM ya keep it small for till you get the hang of what a jeep can do. then add a locker...after that just sign your paychecks over to your favorive 4x4 store (i.e. the junck yard, or the POR for sale board)
i ran 33's for about 2 years b4 going to 36's....

LOS-YJ 03-05-2002, 07:55 AM I disagree with everyone!!!
Sell a testicle...you'll get mad money for it and you only need one not two dude... Then go SOA with lift springs HP 60's front and rear, lockers, ATlas II , V8, 38's..go big or go home...And you might still have some money left over dude. So if the chicks dont dig that one nut shit just get some asian hookers they dont care .
They will love you long time.... :smokin: :smokin: :smokin:
bulldozer 03-05-2002, 08:33 AM Slap some 33's on and wheel it till you break it.
Welcome to the wonderful world of wheeling - where you'll spend every dime you earn and every last minute of your free time.
That said... this really isn't the place for these questions. Yeah, they're all right - slap some good tires on it, and get out there and get some seat time.
We're hear to talk about hardcore wheeling and mods... not how to get started. I'll be the first guy to help a new wheeler out on the trail.. but this isn't the trail.
Go join a club.

JPrush 03-05-2002, 01:00 PM Once you get the experience up you can show up all of those rich kids in daddy's TJ on 35's with lockers...
I'd like to be the rich kid....And dual nuts are always better...
Sillyneck 03-05-2002, 01:12 PM see people you need to look deeper than your past...this kid has access to the pirate4x4 website...duh he's there and ready to get it.
Add a leafs and shackles are for those who lived back in the days where soa was unheard of.
This kid said SOA...he will never be satisfied if he doesn't go big right away. Here's the deal
when you are 16, one year of your life is a long freakin time. If your 40 year old parents say "hey just wait until next year" you think to yourself about how damn long a year takes to turn over.
So in other words add a leafs and shackles will maybe feed the daddiction for 2 months....so Spring that bastard over...get some 35's then when you realise that you can't wheel a 3spd w/ no gears or P/S then you start fixing that crap.
A dana 30 will hold up to 35's. you'll be fine man....get it awn! any questions feel free to e-mail me.
Mr.RatBastard 03-05-2002, 01:45 PM I agree SOA is cheap as long as you do the work and I would like to think if he can get past the moncho bullshit in here that he came to the right place if he runs into problems while doing it.
P/U some used 38's or 35's as everybody here stated you will go...31,33,35,38 and maybe 39,40,42,44...35's or 38's will get you by for quite a while. when you start breaking shit look for a cheap donor truck and use the running gear....lincoln lockers are cheap to.
1 question for the real weenies...SOA,44 front and 60 rear and 35's doesnt belong here becouse  Get a grip guy's If you need to drink MO  ...pun intended
