so, my truck is at the dealer right now and is in need of new: hubs, bearings, hub seals, upper+ lower ball joints, calipers, brackets, discs, rotors, pads and some labor to put all that stuff in there.

the dealer wants a measly 4500dollars to fix this-- and i dont think that im going to pay that any time soon-- whats the best option for a daily driver truck thats used for towing. Id like to get stronger hub assemblies and bearings so this doesnt happen again.

oh-- and one more thing, the numbers off the front of the axle are 1c34-3002-ja, I hope that means something to some of you guys out there :D

I dont really use this truck for wheeling that much--just for towing my junk around. I live in sacramento, so if anyone knows of a shop around here that specializes in stuff like this that would be great!

Buy Dynatrac hub conversion kit, then get brake parts at Autozone. Buy manual while you are there and install yourself. Unless it's a dually, you have a Dana 50.

WOW!
I have seen Super duty Dana 60's go for 1500.00 in E-bay, I would just buy another one.

I'm pretty sure that it has a d60 in there--well...the 4x4 shop around here says that because its a 350 and not a 250 it most likely has a 60 in the front. The Dynatrac conversion kit seems like a good buy, have you heard of anyone having any problems with this kit?

well... the truck has a 6" pro comp lift and 35's--- I really just took it for some mild off roading while it had about 25 people in it, so it did have some wieght. As I understand, the unit bearings are garbage and fail on pretty much everyones lifted super duty. I did climb some pretty steep rock piles in 4low however.

I believe the 01s had the D50, no matter though, just drop in a D60 from a salvage yard and hammer away.

2002 had the Dana 60 front wether it was a single wheel or a dually.

2001 had the Dana 50 front in the single wheel 250 or 350 if it is a dually though it is a 60

Just make sure its a real low mileage one. The 60 has the same failure problems as the 50s. Balljoints and bearings. So be caruful buying a 60 or youll be right back with the same problem you have now.

thats more like it-- but is this kit that your advertising better than the ford garbage or the same strength? I would like to have a stronger axle without unitized bearings, is this kit just a replacement for stock stuff?

www.powerstrokeshop.com. Go to Built Ford Tough catalog then click on front axle parts. Go to complete 4x4 frontend kit. Cost is $725, its got everything you need except for the brake stuff. Then go to the mechanical catalog, rotors are $95 each, backing plates are $10 each, calipers are $126 each. Hope this helps.

If you'd be interested I have brand new D60's for SuperDuty trucks. They are new and unused, but have been in storage since the end of the 2003 run of SD's. They are complete except for a tie rod. They are all 3.73 geared. Have a few auto locking hubs, but most are manuals. Last time I checked with Forward Air, shipping to Sacramento was 195 dollars, but that has been about a year and a half ago. 1K plus the shipping. And the others have been correct.......It wasn't until 2002 models that the single wheeled trucks got D60's. Before that it was only the dually 350's, 450's and 550's that got them. The tie rod on your 50 IS the same one as on the 60's. Every component on these that I have are as is from Dana. I got them through a Dana rep and they are legitimate, not hot.

I can also tell you that it isnt the lift that is killing your axle components, its the offset wheels that you are most likely running now. Also, even though Ford says the frt bearings are not servicable, they can be greased, which will help the lifespan of them. IT takes some work.....you have to remove the caliper, rotor, and access the anti-lock port on the hub.....then you can use a grease gun with a "needle" fitting, as used for female zerks, to get some grease into the hub where the unit bearings are. This process is more clearly described at www.thedieselstop.com

I find it hard to believe that all that is bad. I'd bet someone didn't know what they were doing and tried to ride the bill up so high that you wouldn't have it done. Get a second opinion.
