Looking around on the web, and here, I only saw one bit about shortening a shaft, but not lengthening one. I don't have a lathe but still think it wouldn't be that hard to do a respectable job then have it balanced. Am I stupid? Going to start on it in about, oh, five minutes :D

Hehe- well, I've got the CV end and the slip end out of the tube now. Trouble I'm having is that with the weld where the driveshaft shop put it together last year  I'm having a hard time seeing exactly where the step at the end of the pressed parts was.
So far, I cut the old tube in half to get an idea what I'm dealing with, then set the shaft ends between rollers to turn smoothly while cutting. Air cutoff right through the middle of the weld not quite all the way through the tube. Cut across the tube right up to the edge of the CV carrier/ slip stub, then knock free with a hammer.
Now the sticky part. I think I'll use the calipers and indicate to a standard depth all the way around and flat file to that. Then tomorrow when I get the tube, v-block it on the CV centering pin and slip splines and mic it for straightness. E-7018 it back together in stitches.
So, is that :rasta: enough? I see where brand new parts would be easier to use without the old weld bead in the way.

I don't think that I am going to call you stupid. Do you have a new piece of tube to put in it to lengthen it? I have lengthened my drivelines befor by replacing the tube but I did use the lathe for all the cutting and stuff.

I'll get the tube tomorrow, hopefully it's in stock. My dumbass mistake was forgetting to measure the tube before I cut it, so now I need to mock up the CV end to get the measurement.
A local Jeepin' bud suggested sleeving the thing together. That just didn't sound right. Now I just have to convince the hardasses at the local shop to balance it, even though they didn't build it- shipping to Jesse and back would be a lot for a balance job.
