: classic 4x4 pics
M.Martian 03-04-2002, 07:33 PM My dad scanned in a bunch of his old pictures. Here are some of them from the Rubicon and some other trails in the mid 80's. I wish he still had that old cruiser. Most of these pics are from MTA runs.

Bgcj5 03-04-2002, 07:49 PM Very cool looking pics man. Nice to see vintage stuff
Welby 03-04-2002, 08:21 PM Those are great pics...
Back then 33's were pretty damned big, from the looks of the pictures :).. I love looking at that kind of sheeot :D
Blair 03-04-2002, 08:25 PM Those are some pretty cool pics man, thanks for sharing them. Isn't progress just amazing. I look at these FJ's and then at my truck, its crazy. What was good then is a street rig today. My daily driver longbed fullsize work/play truck tow rig has at least twice the flex these guys did and probably twice the vertical wheel travel as well. All you hardcore guys have like 4 times the flex they did then. And what are the big tires tehn 33-12.50? Crazy!! Time marches on I guess. The fun is still the same though no matter what your wheelin. Anyway thanks for the look back!

The tan FJ in most of the pics is my dad's old 76(?). It was running a 2 inch lift with 32's which was pretty much the norm.
I have a small amount more here (http://home.attbi.com/~mmartinez/classic4x4)

I like those old pics. looking cool, look that the spare tire cover "Puplic land for public use" that is so cool.

onetoncv 03-04-2002, 09:10 PM nice to see pics of back then- the old iron keeps coming back for more- Jess
Rubicrawler 03-04-2002, 09:22 PM Thanks for the great retro pics! Those bring back some very fond memories :) I haven't seen that many Tru-Tracs in once place in a long time. Believe it or not, they were the tire-of-choice back in the day.
ol John Henry 03-06-2002, 02:43 PM I haven’t seen brown corduroy pants in years
one more time
I haven't seen brown corduroy pants in years :p
Junkyard 03-06-2002, 04:13 PM Cowboy hats must have been regulation headgear on the 'con back then :D
Dig those retro-cruisers. "Spring-over - what's that?"
Tan Wheeler No Mo 03-06-2002, 05:16 PM I love those old Tru Tracs those tires were what Swampers are today. I crazt to see how much the trail has changed. But my dad and his wheelin friends still go spring under and cowboy hats. OLDSCHOOL. I got pics like that of jeeps when I was five.
Great pics....BGF...."before great flex"........a time when flex meant muscle movement...:D ....reminds me when I did it in my FJ on 31s...bone stock as they did....:skull:
great pics. man the good ole day really were good.
as for oldschool and cowboy hats.hey wait a minute i wear a cowboy hat.......ah never mind.
CombatChuck66 03-06-2002, 09:17 PM cool pics....I got some like that too...my dad was in the MTA in the 80s and early 90s. I think he was pres for a couple years too in the 80s. He's got some pics at http://72fj40.rockcrawler.com/rubicon.htm his is the light blue one.
85 rocrnr 03-06-2002, 09:28 PM man the pic of the box with bushes all around it is great :D
dog walker 03-06-2002, 09:29 PM Back then if you wanted a big tire, you bought Armstrong true tracs or Norsmans! I still have a true trac for a spare in my FJ60!!! And its like 20 years old!

Phil

Looking at these pics made me wonder if these guys knew that they were the beginning of a trend towards driving 4x4s on rocks that would eventually spawn sanctioned sporting events and a worldwide community of rockcrawlers.. those are great pictures dude!
redruM 03-08-2002, 09:45 AM 70's...31 was a big tire
80's...33 were Big
90's...35's
00's...39.5
do the math 10 years 44's will be the norm
BJ On Roids 03-08-2002, 03:24 PM WOW, thats more fj40s in one place then ive ever seen!!
old sk00l, a few still have hard tops and all, and imagine a half door would have been a pretty big mod back then...
Belly Dragger 03-08-2002, 04:19 PM So I guess it's "Carnage on the Con III"
http://home.attbi.com/~mmartinez/classic4x4/30.jpg
Very cool. Back when 31+'s were monster tires and you actually had to drive. (I read that somewhere)
SeanP 03-08-2002, 10:15 PM Thanks for posting those. Boy the box looked easy back then.

I'll have to check with him to find out where the pics were from. I know some of them were from the Mud in yer eye runs at Hollister, some were at the Rubicon, some at the Sierra Trek and some other misc lakes in the Sierras.
REDDMANIAC 03-10-2002, 07:35 AM I wonder if they would be worth some good amt of cash to the Toyota Corp. for some type of reason. Just dont think ,any people saw rockcrawilin as an oppurtunity to document with pictures back then is all. I love vintage photos.

M.Martian 03-12-2002, 04:41 PM I talked to my dad about the pics. Apparently I was wrong about the time frame. These were from the late 70's. He joined the MTA when they were still a new club of about 15 people.
The pics are all from the Rubicon, Sierra Trek and the Hollister Mud in yer Eye event.
