Hey I might be able to convince some family members, either this or next year to donate some money to the blue ribbon coallition, fotr, etc but want to know how they can write this off as a tax break. i.e. donations to "needy" organizations if at all possible.
thanks

Almost certainly yes. It's got nothing to do with "needy", just whether the orgs follow certain IRS rules. Just contact Blue Ribbon or whoever and make sure they qualify, any fund raising person there should know. Most orgs like that will even send you a special tax receipt with the appropriate official-looking numbers on it, although your cancelled check is already good enough for uncle sam.

Right now you would not be able to write off a donation to FOTR since it is not any type of corp. They recommend sending donations to Blue Ribbon.

True, but with BRC you can ask that it be used for the Rubicon legal defense.

actually in the sticky thread at the top of this forum is the info:

One thing is guaranteed in legal action. It will cost money. The BRC has already set up an account to which you may send your tax-deductible donations. Contributions will be gladly accepted via the US Mail or filed online using Pay Pal at:
www.sharetrails.org

Mail donations to:

BlueRibbon Coalition Legal Action Fund
Attn: Eldorado Legal Action Fund
P.O. Box 5449
Pocatello, ID 83202-0003
