It's got nothing to do with "needy", just whether the orgs follow certain IRS rules. Just contact Blue Ribbon or whoever and make sure they qualify, any fund raising person there should know. Most orgs like that will even send you a special tax receipt with the appropriate official-looking numbers on it, although your cancelled check is already good enough for uncle sam. They recommend sending donations to Blue Ribbon.
