: Woooo Hooooo!!!
Mechanos 07-09-2005, 11:23 PM Well, after 4 years of blood, sweat and hard work, I finallly drove the Scout tonight. About 11:30pm Sat. night, hooked up the laptop and took her for a spin. Drove it around for about an hour logging data from the EFI system. Ran pretty good, but the fuel map definately needs a little work. When pulling hills and letting the engine lug down, I'd get some popping and stumbling. Fawkin' stoked!!!!!!
Gen. Nonsense 07-09-2005, 11:31 PM Thats good news. :smokin:
Sully 07-10-2005, 08:32 AM I don't believe it. We need pics for verification! :flipoff2:
Congrats man... :cool2:
budget76 07-10-2005, 09:25 AM awesome. congrats man :smokin:
Mechanos 07-10-2005, 04:03 PM Spent all day today driving it around .... almost burned an entire tank of gas :flipoff2:
I do have a couple of issues to address though: near the end of the day, my break pedal started getting spongy. My brand new master cylinder is leaking from the bore, just like my brand new wheel cylinder I replaced a week ago.
I've still got that little stumble/popping back thing happening occasionally at around 2000-2400 rpm and between 60-80 MAP reading. Since I'm currently running a 454 fuel/spark map, my guess would be a timing issue. (Edit: Correction... after checking my notes, I'm running a 5.7L/7.4L hybrid chip as a starting point.)
My left rear axle seal is leaking :mad3: Now I have to pull that shaft and take it down to the machine shop to have the bearing pressed off, a new seal installed and the bearing pressed back on. (edit: forgot to mention that the seal is new too!!! Everything on this sucker has been gone through from bumper to bumper.)
I'm having a slight issue with my chip burner, too......
Oh yeah, my gauges when dead just as I was turning back into the driveway.... must have blown a fuse or something. Too hot and tire right now to jack with it........
SSGTWC 07-10-2005, 04:18 PM Good deal Man, sounds like you'll have it ready to go for the Con run
ihojeff 07-10-2005, 04:29 PM Right On! I know the feeling when a long term project finally gets driven. Can't wait to finish my silver scout project but I'll be lucky if I can work on it before the years end.

Sounds like a typical day in a Scout  Congratulations on the big first step, hopefully the rest of the gremilins will be little ones

Yeah... it does, but after going through things from stem to stern, I'm a little pissed about the brake issues. Brand new wheel cylinder... leaks. Brand new master cylinder.... leaks. That's just a crock of shit. The axle seal leaking pisses me off too, but that's just because it envolves a run to the machine shop.... probably cant blame anyone but myself for that one. Could have gotten it started crooked or cut it or something... oh well. Just talked to parts/axle guy and looks like it'll be right $50 for a new seal, new bearing/race (in case the existing bearing gets destroyed on removal), new locking collet and labor to R&R the bearing.
Now the gauges.... that doesn't surprise me that much since a lot of that wiring is still the original harness. Resolving the issue with my chip burner is most important to me now so I can get this thing dialed in.
Overall, though I was pretty pleased. Going down the road, it pulled just a little bit to the right, but not much. The steering wheel is rock solid with NO vibrations or shimmy at all. I did take it up to 60mph indicated and I could start to feel the 36" SX's then, but it still wasn't bad. I've got 5 golf balls in each tire and it seems to work really well.
When I got the Scout it had 27" tires and 3.73's, that calcs out to 3017 RPM at 65 mph. When I hit 60 mph on the speedo, I was doing right about 2900 RPM. 36's (if they actually are 36" tall) and 4.88's calcs out to 2915 RPM at 64 mph, so I think the speedo is pretty accurate.
Mechanos 07-12-2005, 08:19 PM Slipped another axle shaft with a new seal/bearing back in her tonight and drove the piss out of it for about 2hrs. straight. Logged a bunch of efi data and even took her out on the freeway. Got it up to 65 indicated and held it there for about 6 miles or so... was surprisingly smooth.
The gauges were easily fixed by replacing a fuse.
Still need to address the master cylinder leak, but will probably just swap on my hydroboost unit & master cylinder instead of buying another SII mc.
chip burner is working againg too.... :D all around good day.

Cajun 07-12-2005, 09:42 PM Congrats man, the first drive after such a long project is a great feeling!
Mechanos 07-13-2005, 10:25 AM I thought you were already running the hydroboost unit?
Not quite.... I have all the pieces gathered and brackets, etc. fabbed and sitting on the shelf. I just never got around to installing it since the truck wasn't drivable at the time. Now, I'm having too much fun driving it to even take a pic of it... let alone install the hydroboost. :flipoff2:
Mechanos 07-13-2005, 08:50 PM OK fawkers... here ya go. I know, I know.... the night pics kinda suck, but was the best I could do at the moment.
Bones 07-14-2005, 04:10 AM At least link the fawkers

Bones 07-14-2005, 06:26 AM
I was stinkin' last night and thought why not remove the seat bases and hack a few inches out of them to lower the seats? Seems simple enough to this white guy.
Can I borrow your gooseneck Friday? I need to go to Topeka to pick up my bike
Mechanos 07-14-2005, 06:58 AM Looks like I may have access to a bender now.... just need to coordinate schedules with the owner. Thought I'd just go ahead and ditch the bases and tie the seats into the cage.
Sure, you can borrow the trailer.... that lil' toy gotta ball in the bed? :flipoff2: If not, you'd have to borrow the tow rig, too.... and that comes with a driver. :flipoff2:
Bones 07-14-2005, 07:02 AM lol, It might fold my tinfoil tailgate, but I will see. Worst case I rent one for a day.
