View Full Version : Ford 10.25 sterling shim question
I have a 87 ford 10.25 sterling rear diff and the shims on both sides of the carrier are starting to slide out. I feel that the gears are properly installed and I'm not seeing excessive wear or heat. Is this common? Are there any good methods to keep the shims from sliding out?

If the shims are walking out, it may not have enough carrier bearing preload.

Don't the shims go under the bearing? How could they be sliding out? Been awhile since I had mine apart...

no its a ford 10.25 the shims go between the race and the axle tube area.
I've seen this happen too. I just chocked it up to 10.25's suck
It's difficult to get enough carrier bearing preload, IIRC the 10.25s don't accept a case spreader.
