I looked at Brian's site and did not find it.

When taking 1969 gears and stuffing them in a 1976 t-case which thrust washer combinations or shims are used?

TIA

ok,
has anyone here ever put a 3sp idler gear into a 4 speed (beyond transitional) transfer case and run it for some period of time on or off road?

Did it fail?

Rick,

I just did a search on the last time I asked this question and found messages from Cory (aka Lord Baskerville) and Coyote indicating they had either done it or were in the process.

I originally had e-mails from a few who had successfully done the swap, but they got lost when the computer toasted.

Thanks for your help.

I have mine done exept for the bolt to hold the t-case gear to the 420 shaft. (just have to go buy one)
I bought a handfull of shims and just used whatever worked to get proper clearance.
Checked my spacers (dimpled things) against new ones and no diff so used the old.
ALL gears line up like new.
Have not installed yet, but, the clearances are on so it should last.
????? gears into a 79 case for me.

just a reminder when you put that bolt on
for the sm420 it is best to use lock tite
and a grade 8 bolt.

Yup, I am going grade 8 stud with red locktite then a nut with red also...
Will flatten one side of the washer and fab a keeper to fold over the washer and then the nut.
Should keep everything in place;)
