I just picked up a 44 front and a 44 rear with 4.56 gears and both are carriers are welded. I run a 3 speed auto with the np231 w/2.73:1 low range.
What size tire should i run? will these axles hold up to 37"? FYI, they are going in a YJ 4.0L.
Thanks for your time.

With an auto, they should be fine unless any villainy occurs.

That is all based on how hard you wheel it. I know some people who run 37's on their 44's or are planning to but they also have chromoly shafts. If you get it bouncing good on those tires it will be more likely to break. If nothing more I would be securing some spare axle shafts just in case or upgrade to chromoly's and keep your stock ones for spares.

Your fronts won't hold up with a welded diff. I busted 3 front shafts and 2 ujoints all at once one time in my backyard on 35's... Though I was being dumb. It's also an auto and welded.

Ya, welded fronts are gay. i don't care what people will say. Put in a lock right or some other lunch box up front, or if you plan on keeping these axles a while, go ARB.

Well I didn't say they were gay, they work...and I have hubs to unlock if I want. They aren't easy on parts though (but then, an arb is the exact same thing as a welded front end, but less reliable).

your saying an ARB is less reliable compared to welding?
I'll argue that. I'll take an ARB anyday of the week over a welded diff. atleast with the arb i can turn it off to make turns.

Hah, and at least when I need it--I know that the welded diff will "turn back on". I can always unlock a hub.

Ya, you didn't say it, that's me just adding something in. Yes, they work, but they are too much of a PITA as far as Driveability is concerned. It is more reliable than an ARB (assuming you know what your doing) since there's no lines or anything, but not worth the hassle. Then again, a lot of my toyota buddies love their welded fronts.
