: are D60 Fronts that expensive ?
redruM 03-05-2002, 12:11 PM i understand that everyone and their brother wants a Ford HP D60 Front axle... they are readily available for between 600-1200$ i would think that Dodge & Chevy should be easy to find and way cheaper but after searching back on the For Sale Board i never see any for sale... i have mine but my friend only needs a front and cant find one... (i got my 1998 Dodge D60 (burnt) front while i was looking for a Rear and it was only 50$ (pick & pull) i realize that that is way cheap but i would think you could pick them up all day long for 200-250$ am i dreaming ?
Dreaming
Even in MN where everything has rusted away front 60's are spendy.....
Aggro 03-05-2002, 12:20 PM dreaming or :smokin:
ol John Henry 03-05-2002, 12:28 PM yes they are $$$$
Danger Ranger 03-05-2002, 12:40 PM some seem to think they're gold goat shit for some reason.
but regardless... they are expensive, I coughed up $1400 for my RC D60
hey i only paid $180 for a piece of gold goat shit so you musta got ripped off. :flipoff2:
Charles Aarons 03-05-2002, 12:49 PM I paid $18,000 for mine in 1988 but it had a Ford F350 with a 7.3 attached.
And that was for open diff.
Charlie
bigdude 03-05-2002, 01:10 PM Coughed up $1200 for my HP 60, but it was completely rebuilt (w/o brakes).
Everything is expensive when you buy parts too.
brector 03-05-2002, 01:12 PM Got mine complete for about $500 (chevy that is) :D But - rebuild it and the $$$ goes up really quick.
MattS 03-05-2002, 01:27 PM Mine were $1100 and $1200. One needed brakes and the other one needs gears. Both HP Ford 60's. :D
gunracer1 03-05-2002, 01:30 PM they are indemand, and when it come to what something is worth, its all up to the buyers. i know people that have got them for 100 bucks, and i have seen others that spent 5k. to me the top would be 500 and you can still find them for that, but it takes some leg work or some good luck. the one you got was a bargian but it is not that much indemand. with a 2 piece axle, ball joints and sealed wheel bearings. it was still a deal, i just sold a set of knuckles for 250 and had many other people that got in line if the deal fell through. it just comes down to how fast your friend wants it, and how much looking he is willing to do. mike
I got mine ford rc60 for a song... traded an axle and a transfer case for it. :flipoff2:
But normally they are expensive... camo got abetter deal than I did. bastard.

TODDK 03-05-2002, 04:16 PM I got my ford for $400 pretty complete needing bearings etc...
I have a buddy who is selling a chevy 60 front and rear for $800 for both!!! if that helps you at all! the front is complete exept calipers rear has no ring and pinion........
liveaxle 03-05-2002, 08:08 PM I have heard that Alaska has cheap Dana60's.

ya every thing is less expensive in alaska cause they have to air freight it in.
bgreen 03-05-2002, 09:02 PM Dana 60's are a bummer to find up here. People have just recently caught on to what they are worth, and have become increasingly difficult to find. I looked very hard for one for about 3 months. Not only did I not find very many, but the ones I did find people would not sell them at all! Maybe for $1500 or so. I finally found one with a powrloc, that was in a swamp buggy. I bought it and now Im stuck with selling the rest of the buggy. I probably would have been better off paying the $1500! Oh well. The buggy was an 80 3/4 ton frame with a 60 front, eaton rear, 4" lift, warn 8274, and 45x18.4x16.1's. The bummer was the :rainbow: pancake 4, and VW transaxle :barf:
MattS 03-05-2002, 09:09 PM Yep Yep I heard that too!! They are in Zambonies!!!

Supergper 03-06-2002, 01:02 AM I paid $900 for my RC D60 and it was complete...although once I get done rebuilding everything about it I will be into it a whole lot more than that:D

Oh jees, not that again
bigdude 03-06-2002, 06:52 AM Just spent another $275 last night for brakes, new inner and outer bearings, hub seals, lube (for the axle , :flipoff2: ), brake fluid, and some misc. stuff.
I spent another $250 on locking hubs, spindle bearings, and those spicer solid core axle u-joints (beefy).
Yes they are expensive (and I still need my R&P and Detroit) to get up to speed.

Yep, them parts add up quick.
Best deal on brake stuff I found was at Federated Auto Parts (it's a chain). New disks, rebuilt calipers and pads for $190 plus tax and cores.
Spent another $80 on bearings at Autozone
Spent another $90 on kingpin rebuild stuff (new cones, bearings, seals, etc)
Dropped $250 on steering arms
Still have to get new axle ujoints, drag link, tie rod, and all the ends.
SHERPA 03-06-2002, 07:34 AM I paid 1100 for one rc60, 1200 for the other rc 60, and 700 for a
chevy d60.
all three conplete. but I'll have a whole lot more invested once
they see a frame to mount up to.
but I've also got a shitload of parts off them I'm about to post
as well...
I also found another rc60 locally for 1000. I hooked up my buddy
with that one.
Ebay gets a ton of money for 60 parts.......

aaronlosey 03-06-2002, 07:55 AM its easier to pay a thousand bucks to get the 79 chevy and then throw and sell the rest away. you can pretty much end up with a free axle that way. course there is way too much time involved with that.
lt1yj 03-06-2002, 08:57 AM I find the 60's Fronts are out there for the people who are willing to do the leg work. Most small yard owners don't know what a 60 is. So you need to look through the yards at every vehicle. I've found several in trucks marked 1/2 tons because someone swapped the cab.
Cliffy [JD] 03-06-2002, 09:55 AM I find this thread amusing. Why? The cost of D60's seems to triple and even Quadruple when you consider the cost of a rebuild.(even a garage rebuild)
And here we have CTM Joints and alloy shafts, and people were saying "just get a D60 and throw it in, after you buy CTM's and shafts and ""WHAT-NOT"" you'll have bought yourself a complete D60"
It seems that a rebuilt D60 would cost way more $$$$ than a rebuilt D44 with CTM's and Warn shafts...................Plus it weighs a TON!!!!!!:usa:

It seems that a rebuilt D60 would cost way more $$$$ than a rebuilt D44 with CTM's and Warn shafts...................Plus it weighs a TON!!!!!!
Let's see...
$100 -junkyard 44
$500 -Detroit
$600 -Warn Shafts
$300 -R&P + Install Kit
$250 -CTM's
$300 -Machine work (Rotate knuckles, set up for SOA)
$300 -Steering
$100 -Bearings
$100 -Locking Hubs
Total=$2550
Those are just round numbers but my point is that it costs a lot to build any axle from scratch.
I'll have about 2500 in my HP60 when I'm done, and it will be ready to bolt in. Granted I'm using stock shafts, not warn, and spicer joints, not CTM. Strengthwise, however, I will take my 60 (not to offend anyone, just my opinion)
It seems like the extra cost of Warns and CTMs offset the extra cost of the axle puchase.
I don't care what some people say - a CTM-ified Dana 44 is NOT as strong as a Dana 60
bgreen 03-06-2002, 07:54 PM I agree with DRM. I had considered all the things mentioned above before I bought my 60, and any way I looked at it I still wasnt going to try to run 500hp, 4 to 1 low, and 44" swampers on a dana 44. I consider housing and knuckle strength pretty important, and the I dont think a 44 can compare to the 60 in that area. :D
RokHeep 03-06-2002, 08:41 PM A kickass, tricked out D44 is still a D44... Knuckles, spindles, etc... It will never be as strong as a D60. Either you need it and will step up to the plate, or you will get the most out of your D44 and then step up after you realize this.
RokHeep 03-07-2002, 07:06 AM Rockwells are :rainbow:
I could care less about having a Rev Cut in the front.
I NEED one in the rear! I dont have a choice. My driveshaft must remain up high. It has too.
I can't find one in a yard anywhere. Time to look in yards in Ohio. Then maybee Maryland, then TENN then? ? ?
