Here are a couple of the latest pics of our samurai after the addition of scout dana 44s f&r and a set of 35x14.5 boggers. Its a mud bog only competion vehicle that we constructed at Virginia Liftmasters out in Petersburg Va. To recap its specifications, it has a 300hp chevy 283, th350 trans, and a chain and sprocket t-case. It did pretty well last race season with stock sammy axle and t-case, it took home 3 1sts a couple of 2nd place trophies and a 3rd place trophy. The only casualties were 3 inner axles 2 long side and 1 short and one birfield(fixed that with spidertrax rings those things are tough!!).

Cool! Have you broke a 44 shaft yet? Why did you use a chain transfer case? What kind of springs are you using?

Dont know if we're gonna break any axleshafts yet... we only broke the stock sammy stuff every now and then. The t-case is something new that we are trying. It is not a chain drive t case like a np203 or a quadratrac, it is actually 2 sprockets with # 60 chain between then. We built a frame to hold two shafts with sprokets on them which are supported by carrier bearings on each end. One is up at the transmission output and the other is down about 12-14" and drives another shaft and sproket with the driveshafts connected to it. Its kinda like the old monster truck t cases. Also if you have seen the nitrous fed sand/mud drag rails they use something similar to this to drive the front wheels. As for the bumper we dont need a huge bumper to run mud bogs with it. Besides that this is a budget built rig so we didnt want to waste money on a bumper that would not get used. The springs are a combination of stock sammy leaves and 78 scout leaves. They serve 2 purposes 1 they give us enough clearance for the tires on 14" wheels and 2 they make it a little stiffer so it doesnt axlewrap anywhere near as much as it did with stock sammy springs

You could probley build a stout "chain" transfercase for some killer gear reduction. Don't ya think? Has anyone else ever used one? If monster trucks can use em .........

I have been kicking around the idea of using a chain drive set-up to replace the jack shaft and get a little more reduction. My thoughts were to put a sprocket on the tranny output flange and run a chain over to an intermediate shaft mounted on the driverside frame rail and then another chain going from the intermediate shaft back to the transfer case. The reduction could be done in two small steps and not take up much room.
Anybody want to comment on this idea?

Ill be going back home next friday the 15th, I will get some pix if I have time... we will be getting it ready for the first mudbog of the season so we have a few bugs to work out. We have to weld up the frontend, finish up the chaindrive assembly (put the chain on it and make sure it has enough tension), and complete the driveshafts and chain covers to keep mud out. Thanks for the feedback fellas.

I talked to my buddies back home tonight and the sammy is mobile but they have already broken it while testing the new setup. They hadnt re installed the traction bars on the rear end yet and were out romping on it and broke the yoke off of the pinion in the rear. Anyway I will be going back home this coming weekend and will get lots of pics for you guys and gals. Take it easy.
