View Full Version : Pressure washer accident....Uh oh!
Ok I picked up this beater car and was washing it and thought I would wash my sandals and accidentally hit the trigger and blew a hole in the side of my ankle.....I thought it was just a flesh wound but now it is turning red and getting big and went from a quarter size gash to a fist size swell....I heard people loose limbs from this stuff and I am headed to the doctor tomorrow morning. Watch the pressure washer and dont let yourself do what I did

My uncle was cleaning his driveway with mine and slipped on some wet moss. Cut right through his jeans and under sliced his leg under the kneecap. He was in the hospital for over a week. I understand the worst part of it was trying to get all the jean shreads out from under the kneecap. Since then, I am very causious firing it up. Felt bad that maybe I didn't warn him well enough. :(

My neighbor sliced through 4 of his toes on one foot clear to the bone. It was about a 1/2" gash. Sure makes me be a little more carefull when I'm useing mine too...I'll never forget him running across the street to show me :barf: :barf:
Yes power tools are dangerous.A lot of people get injured or die from these accidents.Just some pre-cautions,wear safety glasses, dont wear gloves or loose clothing when operating equipment such as drill press, mills, bench grinders, lathes or tools like these that have moving parts. They will suck your hand/clothing in so fast you will not know what happend until it's over.

I was on one job out of town when a guy doing the intial vessel cleaning cut his right foot clean off through his work boot. Mind you it was a 10,000 psi truck mounted pressure washer that did it but that's what happens if you don't watch it. Even to this day when I tell people about the incident they don't believe me because they think it's only water... well I guess those are the people who don't get to borrow my pressure washer.

Maybe those people need to watch the american chopper episode where they cut that chunk of 3/4 plate with the water jet. It made a beleiver out of me.
Ok here is what I did....I took the following
2 Ibuprofen
3 glucosamine sulfate
1 nyquil
I doused the tear in neosporin and cleaned it with hot water first. I got a good nights rest....well 7 hours good! and woke up to find the swelling was down alot. I hosed it again with hot water and added more neosporin and will wait till the end of today.

the place i work routinely cuts pieces much thicker than 3/4" with the waterjet. although its not JUST water as they have sand in the mix to help cut most materials. sand or no sand though, 40k psi will do some damage.

When you hit yourself with a hp water jet, the big problem is not the wound itself (depends on the location offcourse) but the amount of dirt, clothing and such wich the jet forces in the wound. The wound will almost surely infect, and reading your symptoms I guess your wound is already infected.
We work a lot wit hp water jets, biggest units we have is a 2400 bar unit wich we use to cut steel (water mixed with cutting grit) and in every course we took or every manual they always insist that you go see a doctor after a puncture because the wound needs to be cleaned out profesionally or it WILL infect.

Injection injuries are bad news
When I was researching a new paint sprayer, I saw a pic of a guy who sprayed himself & paint got injected under his skin. Looked really nasty :barf:
