: Klune-v underdrive vs. NP203 doubler box
broncobuster37 07-16-2005, 07:49 PM Ok, I've been looking up information for both of these, and I can see why each of them have their advantages, but which do you guys think is the better buy/better performer? I'd like to say the Klune, but you can't beat the cheap of the NP203.
420willys 07-16-2005, 08:08 PM i think alot depends on transmission applacation, if you have a transmission that has a 203 bolted to it then you half way there ( kinda ), i know the klune box is made to adapt to wahtever tranney you have but whats the cost of the klune VS a doubler.
i am not sure what the klune has for an under drive gear but i think its a 4 to 1 so the other thing you ask your self is this to much low range combind with your existing T-case low range, i mean there are times when you can be to low esplecialy with an auto, jason.
broncobuster37 07-16-2005, 08:26 PM True, and others I have seen only have a 1.2:1 low range. I'm not sure if they make any underdrives with a more variable range, such as a 2.5:1 or 3:1.
NE-RokToy 07-17-2005, 02:32 PM the klune offers more gearing options and is easier adapted to different trannies
the 203 can be a cheap bullet proof option
I think it really depends on what tranny/transfer case you want to run. For example I have a sm435 with a 205 allready behind it and can bolt a 203 right to the tranny with out having to mess with anything. So all I need is a 203 and a fairly cheap adapter (I think staz works sells one for around $450) which is what I will end up doing as its the most cost effective setup and is as easy as it gets pretty much.
Now if I had a different tranny that wouldnt easily accept a 203 or needed more gearing options a klune would be nice to have. Its really a very subjective deal
slapnutz 07-17-2005, 02:51 PM Klune 2.7:1 is available.
broncobuster37 07-17-2005, 02:54 PM Have any of you ever used both at the same time or would that be way too much overkill?

I have the klune in my MJ with a 231, it has the 4:1 underdrive so I basically have 4 options, 1:1, 2.72:1, 4:1, and 10.88:1 with 35's and 4:88's about 20 mph in full underdrive in 4th gear
MOGXJ44 07-23-2005, 01:33 PM There's no way your getting 20 mph in low-low range, even if you were willing to take your engine to 5000 RPM for an extended period of time.
RPM/4th gear/klune/NP231/axle gears * tire circumference * 60 min/5280'=MPH
5000rpm/0.80/4.00/2.72/4.88*8.6'*60min/5280'=11.5 MPH
You'll never reach 20 MPH with that low gearing unless of course you've got an engine capable of revving to 10,000 RPM.

Jrod-13 07-23-2005, 03:30 PM I have a homemade version of the klune in my truck. It works slicker than shit.
My stock 2.69 low range was low enough for most wheeling, but I lacked wheelspeed to clean the tires in reverse. the 1.96 low in the 205 fixed all of that.
Now I have a 1.96, 2.69, and 5.27 low range.
broncobuster37 07-24-2005, 05:21 PM Interesting how did you make it?
plug ugly 07-24-2005, 07:00 PM running a 2.7 klune and 205 in my 94 brnco. I love it. With a 203, unless you 3to1 it, you only get 1:1, 2:1(basically) and 4:1. With a klune you get more choices. Yes its at a cost, but worth it IMO. Once you did the 3:1 kit, and duobler kit, its close to a klune. Plus, the klune can have the input swapped for like a hundred bucks or something if you switch rigs.
chvy boat 07-24-2005, 09:24 PM For ease of instalation, I dont think you can beat the Klune. appx 19" long depending on wheather or not you need a tranny spacer or not. And clockable to almost any option.
For gearing, well 2.72 is the goliath klune, and 4. is the david klune, that gives plenty of gearing options.
It will run you about 1,000 bucks more than 203 set up.
My only complaint is the number of mounting surfaces that can leak.
Well you could hold out for a Stack4x4 tcase :D
94stepsideford 07-25-2005, 05:51 PM yeap..im holding out for the monster box :grinpimp:
ugly80 11-06-2010, 08:25 PM my son just bought a jp with a 4 to 1 klune in . we had to put a bearing in t case anyone know how much lube it holds and how do you add it, to the klune that is
hopuit 11-07-2010, 08:03 AM Wow awakened a 5 year old post. Here is the answer I found for the question just asked.
LUBRICATION
Use 75-90 weight gear oil in the Planetary Crawler. Synthetic is recommended. Unit is filled to just below the input seal, roughly 3/4" below half way. You may select one of the various removable plugs on the unit that end up at this level to act as a check-port. Unit can be filled thru the vent tube until oil comes out this check port. Less than 1 quart is used
