i have been wanting (needing) a disk/belt sander for a while now. i am not sure how big i need to go with. i kept thinking i needed at least a 6"x12". i saw a 6x9" craftsman at sears today that looked like it may be big enough. link (http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&vertical=SEARS&pid=00922593000&tab=des#tablink) it was heavy cast iron and seems to be well built altho it is made in china (what isn't these days?). it is also rated at 1-1/2 hp.
all of the disk/belt sanders i have seen look to be more for wood working than metal working. is there a difference? is the belt and disk speed going to be diferent for wood vs. steel? does any one have any experience with this combo sander or other recomendations? this craftsman is going for $230. if i jump up to a 6x12" in any brand the price goes up to $800+.

most craftsman electric tools are made by ryobi in the ryobi plant. Id bet that this one uses the same electric motors and such as do many other ryobi tools. and ryobi quality isnt all that great. That is def. for wood, as it has a dust collection bag on it.
Im 100% sure that this machine (more expensive)

is a much better machine, but it is 400 more than what you are looking at. This one is designed for metal working, and It is a 6x10. Wilton is owned by the same company as JET, and you cant beat Wilton/Jet for affordable light industrial machinery. Great tools for the money.
Maybe check out grizzly too.

They are cheaper than Jet/Wilton and the design is similar. They say the quality isnt quite as good as JET, but Much better than HF(which isnt to hard to do) One thing I have noticed is that Jet/ Grizzly/HF equipment, all looks the same, and It wouldnt surprise me if they came out of the same factory, its just that Jet has higher Q C standards than Grizzly or HF. Have used a grizzly bench grinder, and it had tons of power, and had a heavy casting, I would have bought one.

Somebody once said you are better of taking old sand paper and glueing sand on yourself then using the stuff from HF. Any truth to this? I avoid HF at all costs.

Been looking at a Shop Fox one - can get it local for about $320.
http://www.shopfoxtools.com/w1676
It has a 10" disk and a 6" belt with a 1hp motor and stand.
Has anyone used one or know if they are any good?
Thanks,
Ed

Nitro, I have a feeling shop fox is the same as grizzly. The grizzly website sells many shopfox products, and many products look the same. You mgiht want to investigate this a bit more.

I have the same one as Frankenfab posted up. It is no bridgeport, but it definately does the job and has a relatively small price tag.

that looked good when i first saw it. it would at least match my delta drill press. after checking out delta's site i saw this:
6" Belt/9" Disc Sander Model 31-695 Close Window PACKAGE CONTENTS • Delta Industrial Model 31-695 6" Belt/9" Disc Sander with a 1HP, 120V induction motor; 80-grit abrasive belt, 80-grit abrasive disc, stand, tilting table, back-stop, T-handle wrench and instruction manual. For wood only
have you had any problems with sanding metal with it?

i am starting to think the wilton is going to be worth the extra money.
WMH4210K $672.17 "1HP Motor, 1PH, 115V, Miter Gauge, with Stand, Assembly Required ****FREE FREIGHT On This WMH Order Anywhere in The Continental US ** NOTE: Any Residential/Tailgate or Re-Delivery Charges NOT INCLUDED ****"
the free freight sounds good and if they are not in california there will be no tax. the stand/cabinet also looks way better than all the rest. it also has two tables instead switching one around from disk to belt and so on like most of the others.

I have this one from Grizzly:
http://www.grizzly.com/products/item.cfm?ItemNumber=G1183&gid=7E0FF198-5E59-4710-B0A4-466804D2FD66&site=grizzly
It's the second best/most used tool in my shop. Started out with the HF and there IS no comparison. This thing will take your arm off, all the parts are well made, the tables are machined, not just cast, it's WAY heavy duty.
As I remember Jim at www.shrockworks.com also runs this and his reviews convinced me. You can't beat it for the price... $425 far outstrips the Wilton.

...have you had any problems with sanding metal with it?
Not yet (knock on wood). I don't use it a ton either. Most of my sanding is done with hand grinders with flap wheels.
