I want to put a XJ dana 30 in my TJ. Not only are the tubes on my TJ 30 spun but also the Reverse cut gear in the XJ are stronger. Is this bolt in? What years don't have the vacuum discos? Are there oiling issues due to the high pinion? Is it sketchy getting RR 4.10's from a junk yard?

Superior has their shafts out. Not sure about the axle swap. Sounds right in theory. Haven't done it.

It is bolt-in. The '93 through about '99 or so do not have the vacuum disco and are high pinion... I think in 2000 they went to a regular D30 like in the TJs... Probably have a hard time finding 4.10's though, I'd plan on just buying a new set of gears...

This is the same route I plan on going just because Cherokee axles are like $85 at the local bone yard... I'm just going to remove the vacuum crap and cover up the hole, then put in TJ shafts... From what I understand, all it requires is to install a TJ axle seal on the passenger side...

WHAT YEARS DIDN'T HAVE THE CAM BOLTS?

Why are you yelling?

All years had cam bolt cut outs. Takes ten minutes to knock em out. Cam bolts themselves are 13 bucks at the dealer.

actualy, no xj's have the cam adjusters on the axle, the adjusters are on the "frame" end. and my 1990 XJ doesnt have the vaccum disco, its kinda a random occurance in older XJs, it may have something to do with the NP242 t-case (with full time option)

Learn something new everyday. All three of the XJ's I had had cams... aren't the punch outs for the cams there? One of mine didn't have them, had to use a chisel to know the oblong hole out.
It was there just not fully punched.

Grendel,
As far as I know,NO body has 30 alloy stub axles out yet for the stock hub..If so WHO?

maybe i'm wrong, but i know that xj's have adjustment on the "frame" for the lcas, to adjust caster. so i dont know why they would have them on the axle too.

Older XJ's with 242 TC's didn't have the vacuum disco. The disco for the 231's were discontinued in '91. You can use one with a vacuum disco, just make a cable system for it or get a 4x4 PosiLok and you'll have the ability to disconnect the axle shaft if you have locker in the front and want to make a tight turn. I'm not sure when they started using the 297 joint in XJ's on the D30's but it probably late 90's.

4.10 gearer could be found on older 2.5l models but I think they stopped making those in the early '90s.

you could get a reverse cut 4.10 set of gears out of a yj, but thats alot of hassel

Drivetrain Direct is selling a 30 spline stub axle. Saw them installed on a D-44 going into Lou Kiklis' jeep.

Drop him a line, he can give you the info.

Ok, this sounds pretty interesting to me seeing as I have been dreaming something similar up for a while. Now, I have a 97 TJ currently and it is my daily along with wheeler. I live in Missouri, so we don't see too extreme wheeling here. I can get my hands on an XJ d30 for next to nothing, if not free. The gearing is already setup and that is not an issue. It is a vacuum disco model and I would want to home brew a cable disconnect (can do it for free too). Now, can I bolt this in directly? I would want to swap out axles, knuckles, and calipers from my TJ, correct? Are there any special changes to seals, etc. or is this all a direct bolt on? For a poorman's locker, I would weld the spiders up and use the cable disconnect. I don't have large amounts of money for bigger and better swaps, but would this be advantageous for me to do this since I would gain the HP and rev. cut and the poorman's locker. As for the gears, they are what I want to go to, so that would be a plus. Insight for a POR newbie would be much appreciated b/c I can wrench but I don't know the ins and outs of parts specs, etc. Thanks.

If you put the '97 TJ axle shafts in this older XJ D30, you'll need to do the seals too. The passenger's side seal of a vacuum disco D30 has a wider diameter opening then a solid shaft. I'd swap the shafts and hub, ditching the disconnect because your TJ's u-joints are stronger.

Ah, yes!

His stubs are 30 spline.

Have a question for you all again. Will the XJ's passenger side axle on a vacuum disconnect d30 fit with all of the TJ's outer pieces, i.e. knuckles, hub, brakes, etc. Thanks! Yes I know about the 260 joints but I would change to 297's.

The brake stuff and knuckle shouldn't be a problem. The hub assembly is going to need to accomidate the larger diameter axle shaft on the pass. side, it is different then the driver's side because of the disconnect. Someone out there sells a a disconnect shaft that'll take 297 joints, I just don't know who.
