I spent sat there and picked garbage and cig butts :barf: I was also being a prick about beer cans and shit, So if I offended anyone well maybe you needed to be offended. I was very vocal about how cleanliness and caring is our duty to each other to help keep the trail open. Hope I got through to some and would like to say THANK YOU! We all have to do our part.

Good to hear it was pretty clean and good for you for being vocal. :bounce:
I know I didn't care for picking up the cig butts outta there either :barf: and it's hard to get in btween the rocks to get to those.

THanks bud!!!
Remember smokers, those butts may seem small and insignificant, but they are made from polyester and take anywhere from 6-11 years to fully decompose. Stuff the butts into a can and take them with you. "Leave no trace"

I dont know how dirty the trail can get but Saturday I walked in from loon to sluice and was impressed by with the amount of traffic on trail I only found a couple empty beer cans(whoever is leaving empty keystones were watching you) other than that it was nice.

Ran the trail from Saturday-Monday. Saw very little garbage on the trail in any sections other than camping locations ( Ellis n the Springs). The Box looked clean when we drove by and took a peak on Sunday. From the box to Tahoe we only ran across a few rigs (2 between the Little Sluice and Buck Island, 4 others at the Springs and 2 above Cadillac).

This is great news!! It means we are finally getting through to the masses. let's keep it up and we still need to pay attention to any off trail activities too.

good news for sure-- but i still wonder why oh why do smokers flick their butts onto the ground? That's one of my high level pet peeves--- i just hate it when a driver flickes it out of a moving vehicle or at a stop light that jusy turns green, out the window it goes. we call 'em into the DMV smog program-- hehe-- they'll get a nastygram in the mail. Still, WTF w/ butts in the back country? Ever heard of fire danger? general cleanliness? I wonder if those same folks flick butts and toss beer cans in their own back yards or onto the carpet at home? not likely, but i wouldn't be supresed either way...
my step-dad died from lung cancer, smoked for like 20 years, so i already have a negative attitude of that addiction, but for F-sake, hose clamp a soup can to ur rollbar (for ur butts) and be a good trail stweard.

Was up there this weekend as well. We camped at Buck and went out Gatekeeper. The trail is cleaner than any road, freeway or highway in Sacramento!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is the truth.

True, but the environmentalists aren't gonna try to shut down Interstate 80. We have to hold ourselves to a higher standard. ;)

Hey , I saw backpackers ( possible greenies) shitin in the woods and was too far away to say something and when we got over there they were gone . My point is why do environmentalists think that we off roaders cause the damage, the earth is in constant state of change and decay /regeneration.
All users of it cause some sort of change so who picks the culprit . Nobody does , they just close area's to use. If it is private they have the right. If it is public and some of the public messes it up then they have to close area to protect it. This 12 mile , 10 ft. wide area is far from the worst damage and offenders of nature so why are any greenies even concerned ? are there not bigger , more important fish to fry ? I mean for christs sake , did we not just discuss the issue of people not even being able to identify the trail ? that means it prolly looks alot like the rest of the surroundings, which means it can't be being impacted that much.

the sad truth is the anti-access folks will not stop until motorized recreation is completely eliminated from public lands-- whether to ensure a noise-free wilderness 'experience' or to save some supposed threatened animal. 4x4's are not alone-- the snowmobilers, dirt bikes (and in some places, mountain bikes) and also equestrians are all under threat. They are not satisfied w/ an established trail network; no, its much deeper than that-- they have a fundimental aversion to anything mechanized and that's the agenda-- to boot us all out of the back country.
Thank God for the good, continuing efforts of FOTR, Blue Ribbion Coalition and the grass roots support of pro-access wheelers. Unfortunately, most wheelers don't get 'involved' until a gate appears on their local trail, the belief being not to worry about some trail across the country-- and usually this interest is loo little, too late. On the other hand, the anti-access factions are well organized, well funded by special interest groups (and lots of blue haired retired activist grandmas, Sierra Club, Friends of some WIlderness crap, and the like). The scoping meetings, workshops, etc are generally held during times we're at work. Sure, poublic comment, letter writing can be done anytime w/in the comment period, but often the comment period is closed before the word gets out.
Fight the good fight, get involved, speak up, organize ur local clubs and we'll hopefully make a difference. One tactic we use locally is to 'adopt' a trail and volunteer 100s of man hours cleaning up other messes and trail maintenance-- it seems if we're invested like that, it'll be more difficult to restrict motorized access. We got to know our local BLM and USFS rangers, took them for rides and actually turned them around 180 degrees that all 4x4s, etc. are not evildoers.
So, no simple solutions, no sure fire fix, but we gotta try, nothing less is acceptable.
OK, off soapbox.
mb
One last thing, i wonder whether the American's With Disabilities Act would trump closure, since a physically challenged person should be able to access a remote area via quad or 4x4? interesting...

i thought the box was getting dynamite this year to help resolve some issues in an effort to delay the eventual closing of the rubicon trail?

Paul, it was discussed, but FOTR's many motivated, vocal enthusiasts convinced the Rubicon Oversight Committee to delay this proposal. We have good education efforts underway with users, and good peer enforcement efforts ramping up with the Rubicon Trail Patrol, working in conjunction with the EDC Sheriff, ENF Law Enforcement officers, and ENF OHV Rangers. With good plans in progress and picking up steam, it seems premature to take such irreversible steps.
On a parallel track, there is concern that clearing the bottom of the sluice (even WITH a groundswell of growing public support) just invites miscreants to blow/pry/winch more boulders off the cliff, further threatening the millenial junipers atop the sluice.
Any actions in the Little Sluice need to be undertaken with consideration of nature in the context of past use, current use, and future use.

I smoke, I put my butts where they should be....I picked up a few (what I could see) around the campsite....Picked up some fresh beercans (people coming up the trail....Couldn't tell you who they were and unfortuneately, I didn't see them toss them....3 more spots of garbage....Overall, I've seen it worse but it only takes a few (1) asshole to do it at the wrong time...

I am kinda new here and kinda new to all the stuff we are discussing. So please don't slam me.
I would be willing to donate at least one or two weekends of my time (each month) doing something I really don't wanna do, but for the better of the trail I will do almost anything.
That would be camping out at the Box on weekends with the intent to watch over it. Say Friday, Saturday for starters, just kick it up on the edge and maybe nap all afternoon so I could stay up all night. I got some camera's, why not be on vigil??? I know Merlin is up there and I know he is very capable of taking care of things. I am just trying to add to his presence as well as an extra set of eyes never hurts anything.
I waited almost 20 years to get the chance to do the trail (two trips through so far and i figure at least 150 before I pass). I am here now and I am staying, and even if new I am willing to fight right along next to the rest of you for the preservation of this trail. Being a part of a cause like this is what my life needed! So what say you folks in the know?? Is this a good or bad idea?
Please understand this is just a thought, with need for some constructive feedback.
Best Regards,
PJ

No offense to smokers (I believe it is your right to do as you wish with yourself), but I think it is a good idea to not smoke in the backcountry. No matter how safe you belive you are, it just takes one *accident* to burn the shit out of everything...and the greenies would have a field day with that one.

This is what is all about. While we (as a collective group of reponsible wheelers) are there we do a service to ourselves and generations to come of maintaining our sport. Some care some don't I want to leave an impressing on the ones that don't. If there is someone willing to step up and tell someone that they should pick-up their crap and garbage and others to stand behind that person, They will be influenced to either pick it up or suffer consequenses of thier actions. They won't pick it up and are complete asses about it, Take thier licsence plate down, take a picture of them with said offence in the foreground and file a complaint with EDC sheriff or similar. Some poeple have to really smack thier heads into wallsto realize something, don't think of it as "snitching" or something else consider it helping them to smack thier head just as hard as f!@#ing possible to get the message. I for one take pics and file complaints. I love the trail and have found renewed sense of duty for the trali and my fellow responsible wheelers. I don't want to look back and say "wow I could have done more". I vow to do allI can!

Sounds good, Rich, when is the next meeting?
We need to have a schedule of RTP staff for Labor Day, and ideally, have coverage for select weekends between now and then.
Can you push this from the top side, Rich?
