: homebrew traction bar
Dychen 03-05-2002, 10:43 PM hey, anyone built a homebrewed traction bar:question: i've pretty much destroyed my rear springs and before i buy new ones i want to fix this whole axle wrap problem. i know there are several aftermarket ones out, they probably work great but i have more time then i do money :smokin: any design ideas, things to avoid, etc would be helpful.
fatkid 03-05-2002, 11:40 PM There's not much too it, do you have some type of welder?
Here a few pics of my traction bar....

I had a traction bar that was welded solid to the axle tube... ripped a hole in it. :( The new one uses a axle pad welded to the axle plus u-bolts, with rubber bushings which should allow for a little 'give', and maybe save the housing.

ROCKILLER 03-07-2002, 02:50 PM read the section of the page labeled tech dept. It shows a really nice way to build a traction bar.
tZUKnami 03-07-2002, 04:38 PM Did I miss something or did you not say what page?
DemoMike 03-07-2002, 04:59 PM Here's the link to the page Rockiller was referring to...

yeah too bad that style doesn't work with a springover!
flexlarson 03-07-2002, 11:04 PM the traction bart that mounts to the top of the pinion does not work. FYI
Im gonna make one like the pics posted above.
Looks cheap and sturdy.
Ill use a heim joint all around though.

well your still a newbie, so you should.....j/k.....:flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2: :flipoff2: .........
ROCKILLER 03-08-2002, 07:40 AM why wont it work with a soa?
High5 03-08-2002, 06:35 PM with just the single monting point above the axle it will actually act as a pivoting point for the axle to wrap. if it was spring under then the springs would work with the single bar to prevent wrap. anyway i tried it years ago and believe me it does not work! i tried lots of different setups and the ladder style bar with the shackle at the forward end works the best!
Rockrat 03-08-2002, 07:05 PM I second that motion!! ladder setup the only way

Me too! I had a single bar mounted to the top center of my rear axle back a few years ago.... and ruined a set of springs.:p
willzook 03-09-2002, 03:49 AM hi guys can you tell me is the angle of the shackle on the front of the traction bar critical , if so what angle is it ? thanks
High5 03-09-2002, 06:57 AM the angle really doesn't matter but i prefer it to be about verticle at rest. also it works better if the bar end is above the shackle instead of the ladder bar end comming under the shackle and mount. with it abouve it is alway pulling on the mount with it under it is pushing and if ie is extended a ways it will allow more play than the bar with the shackle mounted below it. i have seen it both ways and i am not saying it won't work the other way but not as well. make youself alittl mock up and play with it and you'll see what i mean.
mud-magnet 03-09-2002, 07:40 AM well i now need a traction bar........my rear springs are toast......so it'll be built like CSR's is............. of corse i'll have to get new springs first.........time for CJ's........

Dychen 03-09-2002, 11:40 AM does anyone have pics of this ladder style. this thing with running hiem joints, will that cause more axle wrap. also, if i switch to the rro yj springkit down the road, will this still work. thanks for the help guys
willzook 03-10-2002, 10:24 PM thanks high 5 I'll do that !
